"Oh no, I couldn't do that. You can't possibly be young enough for me to justify that without it seeming creepy. It's a sweet thought though."
"Oh no, I couldn't do that. You can't possibly be young enough for me to justify that without it seeming creepy. It's a sweet thought though."
“Well, age-wise I would agree with you.” she nodded. “But if we're referring to how “helpless” and “tiny” I am, then it's generally more acceptable. After all, I heard it's pretty rare for someone my size to travel on their own.” she told him.
"Okay, that makes more sense. You're just my little traveling buddy. People will think it's either adorable or really creepy."
“We can make it adorable. Fae aren't the only ones who are clever with their words. Plus, you and I can actually lie when we need to.” she smirked.
"Damn right we can. You don't get out of as many situations as I have without knowing how to get away with something." Rodney laughed.
Charlotte giggled and nodded at his point. “Oh, I'm sure. And you don't get as far in a service job without knowing how to appeal to people. Especially when they're in a bad mood.”
"Customer service is a job for the patient and kind. And that's not me so I'll stick to the woods, thanks so much." He chuckled with a shrug.
“I didn't say I enjoyed it but I'm going to take that as a compliment.” Charlotte quipped, smiling at him. “But I don't blame you for choosing the woods. Almost anything seems easier than customer service. And it's so beautiful out here.”
"It really is. There's nothing quite like having the pure beauty of nature surrounding you. Especially when it comes to something unique like cliffsides or waterfalls of which I've seen quite a few. It always manages to take my breath away."
“And I can't wait to see them myself.” she smiled, choosing to focus on that rather than the minor feeling of fleeting jealousy that he already had seen those.
"And I'll make sure to take you to a couple. There's nothing quite like the feeling of seeing your first waterfall. Of being in awe of the magnificent power before you that's so beautiful but so strong."
“Thank you, Rodney.” she smiled gratefully, her wings giving a little extra flutter in excitement. “It sounds just amazing.”
"It is. And I'll be more than glad to show you to your first waterfall. I can't wait to see your face when you finally see it."
Charlotte giggled at the thought but understood. “I’m sure. Just don't let me get too close. My wings aren't exactly waterproof.”
"Aw, delicate little fairy wings. Don't worry, I'll keep you back. Let's hope the suction of all that water doesn't pull you in with it."
Charlotte shook her head, letting out a soft sigh. “Since I'm your first traveling companion and probably the first fairy you spent time with, I'm going to let that one slide. Just be careful with that “delicate” stuff in the future.” she warned. “Just because my wings can't get wet doesn't mean that they're weak.”
Rodney tilted his head in confusion. "Hm? I never said they were weak. After all, they give you the ability to fly. Delicate and weak are not synonymous. Glass is delicate but can stop a speeding arrow just the same. Although I see your point, I'll avoid it."
“Maybe not but people still mix up the two often enough.” she shrugged, acknowledging his point. But she was admittedly relieved that he hadn't meant anything by the comment.
He hummed in acknowledgement of her statement, going quiet to listen to the sounds of the woods around them. He never truly missed sleeping in a bed. Not when he had all this around him.
Since Charlotte spent so much time working at the inn, she wasn't typically used to such peaceful silences. But she was certainly enjoying it… She just hoped that the lack of conversation wasn't her fault.
Rodney continued on their walk, appreciating the silence as only one who wandered the woods in silence could do. But he didn't mind. It was nice to have someone else if he wanted to break the silence.
Charlotte flew alongside him calmly, keeping her ears open. She may not have been out in the woods like this before but she’d heard enough stories to know how important it was for her to stay close to Rodney while she wasn't wearing her bracelet.
"You know, you can sit on my shoulder if you don't want to fly. I know you must get tired and we're gonna be going like this for a while. Wouldn't want you to wear yourself out."
Charlotte hummed a little surprised at the offer, but nodded with a small smile. “Thank you.” she said as she moved to take him up on his offer. “Honestly, this is the most exercise my wings have gotten in a long time. I do like flying but I just didn't get many excuses to do it… except on my days off.”
"I get that. Sometimes the hardest part of adventuring is all the walking. It gets very hard on your feet but you kinda come to appreciate the burn. It means you've gone somewhere."
