(truck looks kinda like this, more beat up though: https://heavenawaits.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/clip_image001.png )
For a minute everyone was quiet, until Caspian broke the silence with a clap of his hands, "Well, let's get you guys back to base, we can chat more on the way back." Cole nodded in agreement and started back to the truck, Caspian motioning for them to follow before bringing up the rear with the same place next to Delia as before.
Delia forced herself to follow, squeezing Jay's hand tightly when he grabbed her hand before letting it drop. This wasn't supposed to happen, she cursed herself in her head for not watching for drones, for messing up her plans because she couldn't bother to look to the sky. "Leo, shh, go to sleep," She said quietly to the puppy, hoping he would at least stop growling.
(alright)
Jay sat down, leaving room for Delia. He didn't like the fact that Caspian was sticking so close to her. He really didn't like it. Once she sat down, he put his chin on her shoulder and spoke into her ear, quietly, so that Caspian couldn't hear. "I don't want to get split up. I don't like the way he's sticking so close to you. No matter what i say, just…go along with it, please?" He murmured.
Leo went quiet, though he gave a soft whine. The little puppy didn't take his eyes off of Caspian, snout still curled in a snarl.
She nodded, cheeks flushing slightly from how close he was. "Alright, I trust you Jay," she said softly, holding onto her crutches with one hand and tightly holding onto her bag with her legs as the truck started moving. Her free hand went up and she started petting Leo's fur, both to relax herself and to calm down the pet.
"So, where are you two from?" Caspian asked, relaxing on his seat between them and the back of the truck with his gun propped up against his leg. The message it gave off was quite clear, don't try to un unless you want to get shot. Cole was driving and he still hadn't said a word to any of them.
Jay put an arm around Delia lightly. "Why does that matter?" he asked in an even tone, looking at Caspian with no fear in his blue eyes. In truth, he was afraid, he just knew that showing his fear would help nothing, and might just make Leo more agitated. The young puppy wasn't used to other people, especially not ones wielding guns the way Caspian did. Leo kept staring at Caspian, but stopped snarling.
"Just curious," He replied with a shrug, immediately noticing his arm around Delia but trying to brush off the fact that he didn't like it, "I mean, I'm originally from Texas, haven't found another person from that area yet." Caspian propped his arms behind his head, somehow not being affected as much by the swerving and bumping of the truck as Delia and Jay were.
Delia's face flushed even more as Jay's arm settled around her, but she actually liked the contact, leaning against him a little. With Leo acting more calm, she was happy, even though he still was watching the soldier like a hawk. She stayed silent as well, just listening in and calming herself down from the nervousness she got whenever meeting someone new.
Jay nodded. "Ah. East coast, I don't know about Delia." He replied. He held Delia close, his other hand resting on his leg. Leo kept watching Caspian, back stiff as a ramrod.
"Midwest," She answered simply and quietly, running her fingers through Leo's fur. New people always made her skittish and nervous, and Caspian was no exception. Her openness was gone and she seemed like a whole different person as she leaned against Jay while the ride went on.
"Ah, could've guessed you two weren't Texans." The soldier looked over at the two of them again, eyeing Jay's arm around her again, "So, also slightly random question, how old are you two? You guys look pretty young."
Jay kept his arm around Delia. He knew exactly what it made them look like, and he found that he didn't mind. "21." He lied, making himself a year older. Another year of age never hurt anything, especially not in situations like this. Leo shifted slightly so that he was standing on Delia's lap, still staring at Caspian warily.
(Sry I thought I had answered but it must not have actually sent)
Delia thought for a minute, looking around the back of the truck as she answered, "Nineteen or twenty, I'm not completely sure since I haven't known the date in a long time." Her eyes flicked around and she let her good leg bounce absentmindedly, moving one of her hands and resting it on Leo's back so he didn't attack.
Caspian nodded, watching Leo without seeming worried in the least about the pup, "You guys are young then, just not as young as I thought." He relaxed back on his seat and continued looking over at them, "I'm twenty three, so only a few years older than you two."
(its fine!)
Jay nodded slightly. Not that young… He sighed softly. True, but I feel too old. Probably because of the aliens. He looked down at Leo. The little pup definitely didn't seem to like Caspian, and Jay wasnt sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing.
Caspian seemed to run out of questions and he went quiet, still sitting close to Dierra even as she slowly leaned her head on Jay's shoulder. Her eyes flicked closed and she tried to forget the situation they were in right now, instead trying to think of what the coast might have looked like if she had actually been able to see it. She was worried for what might happen at the base, especially about what might happen to Jay if they found out anything about him.
Jay rubbed Delia's arm gently when she leaned on his shoulder, and leaned the side of his head against her head, sighing softly. Leo growled again as Caspian came closer, body going stiff. He snarled, taking a step towards Caspian.
He got the message pretty clearly and scooted a fraction of an inch away from the two of them, eyes trained on the puppy. Delia didn't even pay attention to what was going on when Leo growled, comfortable right where she was against Jay.
Jay reached over and put a hand on the puppy's back lightly, petting him. "Shhh. Good boy. Shh." He murmured softly. Leo calmed down slightly, still glaring at Caspian, though no longer growling.
"So, when did you two get Leo?" Caspian asked, breaking the silence once again as he looked over at Jay for an answer. He moved his gun towards himself a little and kept it right in grasp incase anything happened. The base wasn't much farther away and from there the three of them would be seperated for medical work. After that, who knew what would happen to them.
"A few days ago." Jay admitted, looking down at the little puppy and petting him again. Leo leaned against his hands, then glared at Caspian again.
A small grin crossed his face and he chuckled, "Wow, he's really imprinted on you two then, he hates me it looks like." The road they were traveling on was slowly becoming smoother and smoother and it was clear they were getting close to the base, "You guys ready to get out? We're almost here."
Delia just listened in on the conversation, not saying anything and just keeping her head rested against Jay's shoulder. She didn't want to get out of the truck. Who knew what would happen to them when they had to get out.
Jay shrugged. "We fed him. I guess he likes food." He replied dryly. He frowned slightly. "Do we have any choice?" Leo looked up at them, then at Caspian again.
"You guys don't really have a choice, besides how willing you're going to exit the truck," He admitted, shrugging a little, "I'll warn you guys now, they're going to seperate you for basic checkups, see how you're doing, and then after that you'll be assigned to your civilian quarters. They usually try not to mix genders though, so you may not see a lot of each other after this." The truck slowed and after a minute of being stopped, passed through the gate to the base, driving towards the middle of a field of truck where they would park and get out.
Delia listened to the information and sighed, really hoping they would see eachother again. This was going to be the longest checkup of her life, she could already tell.
Jay nodded, sighing softly. He looked down at Leo. "And what about him?" he asked, gesturing at the little puppy. "What's going to be done with him?" he knew that Leo should go with Delia, as the little puppy had both bonded with her far more, and would be of better help and comfort to her. Leo was silent.
Cassian shrugged, "I honestly don't know, I haven't encountered many civilians that bring pets along with them. I would think, if we have a veterinarian in base somewhere, he would be taken away separate for a checkup and then put with the other dogs, meaning you guys wouldn't see him again." The truck rolled to a stop and he hopped out to the ground, ready to help them with getting out of the truck and their supplies.
Delia sat up when the truck stopped, immediately back to looking around for anything or anyone to be wary of. She hadn't said barely anything within the truck ride, and it was clear she didn't plan on talking any more than absolutely necessary.
Jay noddd. "Oh." Was his only response. Leo watched as Caspian left, then relaxed slightly, looking up at Delia with a soft whine.
"I'm not going to let them take you, Leo," Delia said softly, scooting to the back edge of the truck and pushing her bag off as Caspian grabbed it and set it on the ground. She was determined to get down without Caspian's help and she picked the puppy up, putting Leo in the sling still across her chest before pulling her gun onto her shoulder and her crutches under her arms. There was no way they were taking her gun or her puppy from her, and if she could keep Jay with her too, she would.
Jay stayed near her, silently assisting in any way he could. Leo snuggled close to her in the sling, poking his head out and glaring at Caspian, before looking around curiously. Jay jumped down, then reached up to help her down as well.
She frowned as she tried to figure out how to get down from the quite high up back of the truck. Delia sat on the edge of the truck and dropped her crutches to the ground before sliding and shimmying towards the edge of the truck. The only problem was se had to try to keep her bad leg from hitting against the ground when she dropped down, not wanting to hurt it even more.
