Leo barked happily, and started sniffing around, wagging his tail contentedly. Jay smiled, watching the little puppy.
"Let's keep going you two dorks," She called with a smile, not waiting for them as she walked. Leo would follow, she knew that, and most likely Jay as well.
Jay rolled his eyes, and followed her. Leo followed them, still sniffing around and his tail wagging as he went.
(I'm gonna have them get found by the army in this next post)
Delia looked around at their surroundings as they walked, already back in her mind and thinking. There wasn't anything she was focusing on in particular, she was just thinking to pass the time on their trek towards the coast.
(alright)
Jay watched her for a moment, then returned his attention to the road, humming again. He wasn't sure what he would do when he and Delia inevitably had to part ways. Go into the woods of Canada, maybe? So deep in that no other human could be in danger from him?
They walked in silence for who knows how much longer until a noise caught Delia's attention. It sounded like a vehicle of some sort, one that was coming towards them and her mind finally snapped into gear. "Shoot," She gasped, eyes widening at the realization of what it was, "That's a truck, and the only people I know who have trucks is the army. What do we do?" The sound was still fairly quiet, but it got louder and closer with every second, leaving them with only a few options on what to do.
Jay's eyes widened. "They'd kill me." He breathed, tugging his hat down and covering all the pale curls. "Woods." He commanded, pushing her towards the woods. "If we're lucky, they wont see us." He picked up Leo, holding the little puppy's mouth shut gently, so that he wouldn't bark and give them away.
In her mind she had already accepted the fact that they were most likely going to be caught, and then who knows what was going to happen to both her and Jay. She nodded, going towards the woods as fast as her crutches could carry her as the sound got louder. They would have a little bit longer until the truck reached them thanks to the abandoned cars, but it was going to be close. "Leo, please stay quiet, and Jay, if they do find us, maybe the best bet would be to either get your hair dirty, or to cut it."
Jay nodded, and crouched behind some bushes, pulling out a small bag full of charcoal. "I have this for this exact reason." He said softly. He pulled out his water bottle, and crushed the charcoal into it to create a makeshift dye, setting Leo down as he worked. Leo whimpered softly, but otherwise was quiet.
Delia followed him and sat down next to him behind the bush, her heart already racing as she scooped up Leo and started petting him. She just listened as carefully as possible to the truck, cursing quietly as she heard it stop a little ways away and the shouts of people as they started looking around. If they had gotten out this close to them, it meant a drone had spotted them that they hadn't noticed and they could roughly pinpoint where they were.
Jay cursed under his breath, dumping the charcoal and water on his hair and rubbing it into the pale strands. His hair slowly turned a more grey color, with strange black flecks where the charcoal was. He shook his head slightly and squeeze his hands through his hair to get out the excess water, then jammed his hat back on and wiped his hands on the bushes. Leo squirmed, but didn't make noise.
"They're gonna find us," She said quietly, eyes not moving from Leo as she pet the puppy, "Which means no trip to the coast." Delia wondered what they would do to Jay if they knew what he was, she didn't really want to find out what would happen. The voices quieted but were still hearable and it was clear they were searching for them, on both the highway and in the surrounding area.
"I know." Jay said softly. "We just have to hope that they have no idea about…me." he looked down at his hands. "Or maybe it would be better if they did. They would kill me, find the others, and kill them. Maybe humanity would survive then." He shrugged. Leo held still, sniffing the air.
She shook her head quickly, eyes widening slightly, "No, don't say that, please." Her voice must've been a little too loud because suddenly she heard a shout of, "Hey! I found them!" Followed by someone rushing towards them. Delia was clearly scared and she held on tightly to Leo as a young man spotted them and walked over, a gun aimed towards them.
Leo growled at the young soldier, going still as he glared at the man. Jay put an arm around Delia protectively, edging in front of her a bit as he looked at the soldier with no fear in his eyes.
"I'm not going to hurt you two as long as you cooperate," The soldier said, his gun dropping slightly but still pointed towards the two of them. He was dressed in a pair of clearly sturdy boots, dark tan pants and a camouflage jacket. There was a backpack across his back but he wasn't wearing any hat, leaving his dark brown - almost black- hair visible and deep chocolate brown eyes as well.
Delia was silent, eyes trained on him and not leaving as she pet leo. Her crutches were laid next to her and there was no way she could make a run for it, so their only option was to go with them and hope for the best.
Leo kept growling, squirming out of Delia's arms and standing with his legs planted in front of Delia and Jay, still growling at the soldier. Jay kept silent, keeping his arm protectively around Delia and looking at the soldier with cold blue eyes.
He motioned for them to stand up, not seeming too worried about the puppy guard dog, "My name is Caspian, but you can call me Cas, I'm with the U.S. army and we're required to take any survivors in, so come with me otherwise I'll have to get backup." Caspian glanced over at Delia for a moment, seeming curious before his eyes went to Jay and he noticed his arm around her.
"We have to listen to him Jay," Delia said softly, finally looking away from the soldier and grabbing her crutches. Leo didn't seem happy when she picked up the pup and put him in his sling again. She didn't want him to attack anyone though.
Leo kept growling, staring at Caspian with his ears flattened against his head and his teeth bared.
Jay nodded, and stood, reaching down and helping Delia up gently. "Leo, hush." He said quietly, tapping the puppy's nose with a finger.
She nodded in thanks as he helped her up and got her crutches in place, looking up at the soldier once more. Leo listened to Jay slightly, his demeanor becoming slightly less threatening, but not much.
"Thank you for listening, what are your names?" Caspian asked, becoming slightly friendlier as he motioned for them to start back towards the road and another soldier looking around, "It's not every day we find two survivors and a puppy all intact- well, mostly intact." He motioned to her leg and the crutches and shrugged, "Still better than most we find."
Jay frowned slightly, sticking close to Delia. "Jay." He replied calmly. "Want me to take Leo?" He asked Delia quietly. "Less for you to carry."
Leo kept a wary eye on the soldier.
"I'm Delia, and the puppy is Leo," She introduced quietly, shaking her read in response to Jay's question, "He'll be the most calm next to me, and I'll be fine carrying him, he's not terribly heavy." Delia started forward towards where he motioned for them to go, visibly nervous though with Jay being close she was a little more relaxed.
Cassian nodded, repeating their names and matching them to the people, "Jay, Leo, and Delia. I'll introduce you to my buddy up here, then we'll help you into the truck and head back to base." He seemed to be interested in Delia, walking to the side and a few steps behind her fairly close, but not close enough to be creepy.
Jay stuck close to Delia protectively, keeping an eye on Caspian. If he was honest, he was a little scared for both of them. Delia because he didn't exactly like the way the way Caspian was looking at her. Worried for himself because of what he was. "Okay." He replied to Delia.
Leo growled again when Caspian spoke, squirming so he could peek over at the soldier.
"I don't think Leo is a big fan of me," Caspian said with a small laugh, slinging his gun over his shoulder as they reached the other soldier, a tall and muscular guy with piercing green eyes and dirty blonde hair. "Cole, these are the two that the drone caught, Delia, and Jay, meet Cole." The soldier nodded, eyes flicking to the puppy as Caspian explained, "That's Leo, their puppy."
Delia was quiet, looking down at the ground the whole time they talked and eventually led them over to the truck. There was too much going on in her mind and with the new fact that she had no clue what was going to happen to the three of them, she didn't really want to talk.
Jay remained silent, reaching out and gently taking Delia's hand, giving it a soft squeeze, then letting go. He was trying to reassure her that he wasn't going to let them be separated. Not if he could help it.
Leo growled louder when he saw the new soldier, body stiff in the sling as he glared at the soldiers.
