She looked up at him, grabbing one of her crutches and pulling herself to her feet with Leo tucked in the crook of her arm. “Everything is fine Jay,” She said gently, “You don’t have to apologize for anything, I promise.”

I have so much to apologize for. He thought. He shook his head. "If you say so." He said quietly. Leo snuggled up to her, squirming slightly as he licked at her.
She smiled and tipped her face away from the squirmy fluff ball in her arms, petting him with one hand as she sat down on the corner of the bed. In the back of her mind she went over what she had read, but even as she focused on the words and images that came to mind, she refused to tell him to leave. He didn’t freely choose to kill them, he wasn’t a monster, he was just didn’t have a say over his actions.
Leo squirmed again, wagging his tail happily. Jay sighed softly, raking a hand through his hair. God I'm so sorry, mom. I'm so, so sorry. "I'm going to take a walk. I-I need some air." He said softly, tucking his gun into his back pocket, before walking out of the apartment.
“Be safe, don’t die,” She called out to him, grabbing her rifle from the ground and tossing it onto the bed just in case she needed it. With Jay taking a walk, she was on her own and who knows where Vince has stalked off to. Leo continued squirming and licking and she smiled and played with him to keep him busy.
"Okay." Jay replied as he left. He went down the stairs as fast as possible, leaving the apartment complex and taking a deep breath. Oh my God I can't do this i can't kill her too. I can't. He leaned against the building, closing his eyes.
Delia got Leo to calm down after a few minutes and she laid back on the bed, letting him curl into a ball next to her before she started petting again. It was tempting to fall asleep, her body not rejecting the idea at all while her mind screamed for her to stay awake.
Leo kept wagging his tail as she petted him. Jay took a deep breath, and started walking again, not going any specific direction. After a moment, he started running.
Delia sighed and rolled onto her side, eyes closing softly but ears sharp for any sound of anyone coming onto the floor or into the apartment she was in. Her mind wandered as she thought about everything that had happened, from her plan that Jay turned down to dancing with him, Vice showing up, and the writing in his notebook.
Jay kept running, keeping an eye and ear out for anyone else. He had forgotten his hat, and his pale hair blew loosely, tangling.
Her mind grew fuzzy as her body tried to tell her to sleep, eventually winning after she struggled to stay awake. She kept a hand on Leo and her body relaxed, her breathing even and slow.
After a while, Jay headed back to the apartment, climbing up the stairs until he reached the apartment Delia was in. He hesitated for a long moment, then went inside quietly.
Delia was fast asleep, though clearly dreaming by the way she frowned every so often or curled tighter around Leo for comfort and safety. Her dream was of her family, of her life before the aliens. Instead of a normal day though, every time she touched or saw someone she knew or cared about, they vanished, leaving her alone and scared.
Jay glanced over at her, and frowned slightly, then lay down, closing his eyes. He wasn't sure if he could even sleep tonight, but he would try.
The dream worsened into a nightmare and she trembled, pressing her eyes shut as tight as she could. Leo seemed to know something was wrong and whined, shifting around and standing up. He licked at her face and looked around, trotting across the bed when he spotted Jay and whining again.
Jay sat up, looking over at Delia. He put a hand on her shoulder gently. "Delia." He said softly, shaking her shoulder lightly. Nightmare. I know what that's like.
She trembled harder and dipped her head down closer to her body, unable to wake herself from the ever worsening nightmare. They weren’t something she got frequently but when she did get them, they got bad. Fast.
Jay gently shook her again. "Delia." He said again, louder. "Wake up, it's just a nightmare."
She shook harder before her eyes snapped open and she gasped, immediately looking around worriedly. “Shoot…” She mumbled softly when she saw Jay, looking away and sitting up. Delia pulled her legs up to her chest and rested her head on her knees, letting her mind calm down.
Jay kept his hand lightly on her shoulder. "Are you alright?" He asked softly, hand shifting to rub her upper back gently.
“No,” She responded, close to tears though she wouldn’t let them flow, “I’m really not alright, though no one is anymore.” Leo whined and padded over again, nudging her legs and pawing at her.
Jay nodded. "Okay." He sighed softly. "I'm sorry." He said quietly, biting his lip for a moment. "I…" Leo whined softly, looking up at her with big, sad eyes.
Delia shook her head, glancing at him momentarily with clearly watery eyes before resting her head back on her knees, "Just…don't apologize Jay..you've done nothing wrong right now that you need to apologize for." Her mind didn't process what she was doing fully as she scooted closer to him and leaned her head against him. At the moment she just needed something comforting. Gently she picked up Leo as well and placed him in her lap for extra comfort.
He put an arm around her, holding her gently. He wasn't quite sure what he was doing, he was just trying to comfort her a bit. Leo snuggled up to her, looking up at her with big eyes.
“I’m an absolute mess,” She mumbled, mostly to herself, wiping her eyes and shaking her head, “Stupid nightmares, they make me realize how not normal I am.” Delia reached down and pet Leo while she talked, taking comfort in just leaning against another person.
