Joints popped and cracked as Sage rose from her place on the tiled floor. She'd waited for what felt like hours – three maybe, if she really thought about it – Waiting for something to happen, all the while listening to the snores of a Dr.Werry who'd long since fallen asleep. Now, she left the bathroom in search of something to keep her occupied, but also for food. Perhaps she could follow the walls to the kitchen- No…
Not if those monsters were still out there. What if she encountered on that wasn't small? That wasn't afraid?
The halls were as dark as ever. It was hard to tell how Werry kept such a fine schedule down in his lab. The walls felt endless and misleading, but nothing stumbled into her like it had previously. What felt like forever of walking, she finally saw a small sliver of light that presented her the kitchen.
Sage sighed, releasing all of the pent up fear and anxiety that threatened to strangle her and enter the kitchen. If she could find just one granola bar, she'd be happy and go back to the room. She searched quickly.
The kitchen was large and spacious. There were innumerable cabinets filled with different things, mostly hand-made stuff by Werry himself. However, something seemed to have heard her banging and rummaging, because she could hear soft crooning hums from down a hall.
Sage and backed against the counter, thought again, and climbed on top of it. She watched the doorway and whimpered. Why were they such nosey monsters?
After a few moments of waiting from her end, a peering face looked into the kitchen. It had something like a human face, but there was so much skin and inflammation it looked like it wore a huge scarf. And it did, the scarf around its neck, hiding its eyes was a soft red-violet color. It crooned softly at her, as if asking a question of food.
Sage scrambled against the cabinets as it watched her. With a granola bar in hand she looked at it. Why did it look so….human? It's face at least. "W-what do you want?"
The monster slunk into the room. Despite being chunky around the “face” its two legs and arms were skinny. Its eyes were widened as it watched her, though it was the only thing moving. It purred a soft song again.
Well, it hadn't attacked her yet, despite what Sage had expected. Oddly enough, the monster was nothing like Sage had expected or thought she'd seen. There were no jagged teeth jutting from its gnarled mouth, nor was there blade like claws on its hands. It was gentle and curious.. of her. Sage couldn't deny the fear that eased slightly within her as she looked back at the thing, her whimpering simmering to a slightly trembling lip.
The soft monster in a long scarf with a tiny coat-sweater on purred softly again, scooting closer. It seemed very curious in her now, as if it could tell her fear.
She watched as it scooted closer. Sage panicked, What do I do, what do I do, what do I do? She thought rapidly, then it hit her.
She'd seen Werry feed the monsters, perhaps she should do the same? Quickly, without a second thought, she opened the wrapper of the granola bar in her hand, and slowly stretched it out to the monster. "Is….Is this what you want?"
The monster retracted from her, its wide eyes staring at her. It didn’t seem to want the food that was offered. It scuttled back, singing a soft song in its fear again.
Sage pulled her hand back and sighed. It didn't want food so what did it want? She shut her eyes in panicky confusion. I'm not Werry… I don't know how to handle this! She thought as she fingered a strand of ginger hair in worry.
The monster moved around the kitchen, tuttling softly. It pawed at the fridge, which seemed to be a special fridge that Werry made. It didn’t open when the monster grabbed the handle and weakly tugged.
Slipping off the counter, Sage followed after the monster. She got the message as she watched it, reaching over to open the fridge for it.
The monster shrunk down as Sage reached over it, and sung happily when the fridge was opened with enough force. It nosed around, and the bags rattling as it searched for food brought soft, familiar plaps leading to the kitchen.
Sage caught herself smiling as she watched the monster stifle around for food. But it soon dropped when she heard the familiar sound coming towards the kitchen. She bit her lip in worry. Would all the monsters pile in here? Sage didn't think she could handle as she inch her way back to the counter. Her hand found the granola bar she'd forgotten and she gripped it tightly.
The tiny monster peered into the kitchen. It looked small and mottled, almost like a child. Its arms were curled up near its weirdly inflated chest and its beady, protruding eyes searched the room.
Sage froze, her eyes on the small thing. She limited her movement to a few blinks. She didn't want to frighten the thing again, she didn't want it to screech and wake up Werry, or worse, attract the other monsters.
The little monster looked up at her, hooting in slight fear. It bobbed back into the dark hall, its hoots still distinguishable.
A shaky gasp escaped Sage as fear overtook her. She slid to the floor, clutching her knees. Someone would hear the small monster. Would they come looking? "Oh god, please…. please, please, please, please…" She begged to no one in particular, pressing her face against her hands.
Hoot hoot went the tiny monster. It slowly plapped back into the room, staring at her. It slowly quieted down, bobbing over and cooing softly.
Sage slowly lifted her green eyes to the little monster, peeking through a curtain of orange hair. It cooed to her and she gave it a watery smile, her eyes brimming with tears. "Thank you…" she whispered.
The monster reached up with its tiny hands, patting her hand gently. It cooed and cooed, its wide eyes seemingly smiling at her.
