Mara nodded a little, still smiling. “Sure. I just need to get back up there.” she told Darius before quickly climbing out of immediate sight. “Ok. Hand me a corner.”
Mara nodded a little, still smiling. “Sure. I just need to get back up there.” she told Darius before quickly climbing out of immediate sight. “Ok. Hand me a corner.”
Darius nodded, waiting for the good to go before pushing the fabric corner up for Mara to grab. He was smiling himself, a small hum coming out.
Mara grabbed the offered corner and folded it a couple times to keep it from tearing but not so much that it took away from the length needed. She then took the folded corner and pushed the nail through it… The hard part, for her, would be putting the nail in place in the wall. “Hey, Darius. How well can you reach in here?” she asked since she knew he was much stronger than her.
Darius shifted some, still holding the fabric on the other end so it wouldn't fall.
"Well, let's see." He maneuvered his second hand in, thumb going up to on top of the nail.
"Need me to push it in?"
Mara held the nail in place when she saw him reach in. “Yes, please.” she confirmed, moving out of the way once his thumb was on top. “Whenever you're ready.” she said as she held the rest of the fabric so it wouldn't get caught or tangled up.
Darius nodded, beginning to push the nail in. It was a bit of work, but it wasn't too hard for him to do. He hummed softly, making sure the nail was nice and secure before pulling his thumb away.
"Is that good?"
“Yeah. Looks good.” Mara called back when she saw the nail was in snugly. She dropped the extra fabric, letting it fall before heading to the other side. “Ok. Can you hand me the other corner?”
"Sure thing!" Darius moved to offer Mara the other corner of the fabric, chuckling a bit as he did. It was strange, to think of how much harder this simple task would have been for Mara without him. He didn't think Mara was helpless, but he found it damn cute.
“Thank you.” Mara said as she took the other corner. This job definitely would have been harder for her without his help, especially on finding the fabric. She slid out a needle and some sewing thread she grabbed earlier and started stitching the rope into a pocket she made in the new corner.
"You're welcome." Darius watched Mara's work as best he could, intrigued by it. He couldn't help but want to watch the woman, she just- so cute! She was so cute, he just couldn't help it.
Mara could feel his eyes on her but just smiled as she finished the first pocket. “How’s the curtain look so far?” she asked, letting the fabric fall in place so her home was hidden.
Darius looked over the curtain with a scrutinous eye, then smiled. "It looks good! So long as no one comes too close, it'll blend in well."
"Good." Mara chirped with a hint of pride for their work. "I've just got to stitch up one more pocket so I can pull this back when we're alone." she told him, already climbing down a little less than halfway.
"Great!" Darius grinned, stepping back a moment to examine the curtain further. "I'm glad this turned out as well as it did, it should help a lot."
“I hope so.” Mara agreed as she started sewing again. If Darius looked closely, he would be able to see little flashes of metal from her work. “But I’m glad it looks good so far.”
Darius was paying attention, using the dishes as progress markers of sorts as to where Mara was.
"Me too."
(sorry it took so long to post this. work sucked today.)
Mara promptly finished the second pocket and slid down the rope. “Ok. I think it's done. Just have to test it.” she said once she landed and holding the tail end. She smiled a little and walked it over to the other side of the hole, opening the curtain to see how it looked.
(It's fine I get it!)
Darius leaned forward some as Mara opened the curtain, nodding.
"It looks good," He finally concluded, hand on his chin.
Mara smiled at the approval and tied the curtain open using a loose knot so she could just pull it to let it fall back. “I think this will work good enough. Might not fool too many people but it should give me enough chance to hide or you to come up with something.” she said thoughtfully.
"Mm, that's a good thing. We might need all the time we can get." Darius let out a soft sigh. "Even with me not having many friends, they seem to turn up when we need them the least."
Mara nodded, her smile dropping slightly. “Yeah…How many do you have? Especially who drop in like… like your last one?” she asked.
"Three," Darius said. "Though he is the worst of the bunch. The second one, she at least knocks first."
“And the third?” Mara asked, a little relieved that they would have a warning with at least one of Darius’s friends.
"It really depends on their mood. Sometimes they knock, and sometimes they're climbing in through an open window…" Darius chuckled weakly at the memory.
“They?” Mara echoed in confusion. She had never heard of a single person being referred to as a “they”… Maybe it was because of her lack of experience with others. Her parents didn't have a lot of visitors when she lived with them and Darius and James had been the only other big people she interacted with.
"Oh, uh…" Oh lord, how did Darius explain this?
"Well… some people don't feel comfortable being called 'he' or 'she,' so they go by, well, 'they.'"
Mara nodded a little understanding the… meaning but still confused. “So… your friend is… neither?” she said slowly trying to understand. “Or prefers to be called neither?”
"They're… okay, how about this- their mind's gender doesn't match their body's gender. So, they go by them because it makes them feel like the two match." Darius was floundering a bit, but he was genuinely trying.
“Ah!” Mara nodded, seeming to understand that a little better. Besides, she did notice how difficult this topic was for Darius to explain. “I think I get it now.”
"Okay then," Darius smiled some when Mara said he was getting it, letting out a soft breath of relief.
