Sage's eyes were cloudy as she unraveled the quilt. It happened so every strand she took, more appeared. The pile grew and grew till a sizable square was missing from the quilt. Her hands shook as she set the quilt down.
Sage's eyes were cloudy as she unraveled the quilt. It happened so every strand she took, more appeared. The pile grew and grew till a sizable square was missing from the quilt. Her hands shook as she set the quilt down.
Werry chewed on his lips, searching her face the best he could at his angle.
“Sage?” He finally asked softly, leaning forward a smidge.
She jumped slightly. "Y-yes?" Blinking to clear her sight, she looked to Werry. "Yes? I'm Sage."
Werry’s brow wrinkled lightly in concern. “I know you are. Are you okay?”
Sage smiled and nodded. "Yeah. I'm fine- Oh!" Her eyes were on the unraveled quilt. She looked at the pile she'd made and then to Werry. "Oh, I'm sorry…I did that…."
Werry still looked concerned and somewhat upset for her. “Are you sure? And it’s quite alright.” He sighed softly. “I’ll have to get Violet to sew that back up.”
Sage didn't answer. She stood and shamefully folded the quilt, placing on Werry's desk, followed by the pile of thread. "I'm sorry…" She repeated.
Werry waved his hand gently. “It’s okay. It can be fixed in a blink.
With a shrug, she sat down on the bed once more. She pulled her knees up to her chest and sat silently.
Werry furrowed his brow again in worry. “Are… are you alright? Do you want more food?”
Sage shook her head and looked to Werry. "I'm just bored….it's fine."
Werry nervously curled his fingers up into his palms. “Oh. Well.. um… I don’t really have any boredom busters.”
"Then what do you do down here?" She asked looking about. "Got any books to read?"
“Well I… knit. And I hang out with my monsters.” He looked down at the floor.
Sage snorted. "Stars above, your life is boring, Werry." She bit her nail. "And to think you've been down here for 10 years…"
Werry shrugged. “I don’t think so. My monsters is a wonderful company.”
"Hm." Sage grunted. "And I wouldn't know. I have friends, colleagues, a sibling. Frankly, I'm never alone. So I don't have to find comfort in other things. I guess I have to now, though."
“My monsters are not things,” Werry growled deeply, his mood shifting like the tide of wind and his handsome eyes narrowing.
“They are friends. Beings. They live too.”
Sage didn't flinch from his growl. She looked into his narrowed eyes, and her gazed softened on him.
"Why do they mean so much to you?" She asked.
Werry glared at her for a few moments more before looking away. “They are my family and they treat me as such.”
"But what of your family on the surface? What of the life you could've made there? Don't tell me you gave that up for mere creations." Sage shook her head in disbelief. "I won't believe that you faked your death for their sake."
“I didn’t have a family,” Werry admitted softly. “My life was pathetic and stupid when I was alive. I hated it.”
"Why?" Sage pushed. "Why when people adored you? There were millions who commended the work you did….even when they lost loved ones. For you to hide down here like…. like a coward, it isn't fair to them."
“I am not a coward,” Werry growled lowly again, looking away. “I’m doing what’s best for my research and my monsters. Just because I was idolized doesn’t mean I didn’t like it.”
Sage gritted her teeth, fire coursing threw a she stood. "You selfish bastard." She growled at him. he leaned in closed, her breath tickling his cheek. "This isn't about you! This is about all the people who hoped in you! And failed them! You failed them and you won't even fess up to it!" She screamed at him viciously, her voice breaking with every word. Tears filled her eyes and ran down her hot cheeks.
Werry thrust her away from him, his eyes blazing with anger. “I know I failed them! I KNOW. YOU DON’T HAVE TO TELL ME WHAT I ALREADY KNOW!” He shook his head like a wounded animal. “I’m going to leave you to get yourself together.” His voice had suddenly dropped and sounded dead. He pushed past her and slammed out of the room.
Breathing heavily, Sage watched as he left, jumped as he slammed the door. She swallowed but her throat was dry. She sank on the bed and guilt settled on her even as she tried to fight it. Why had she said those things? Why had she yelled and screamed at him? Her cheeks were wet and blotchy as she sniffled and brought her knees to her chest.
She had been rude and unfair. He had done all he could for those who came to him, for all of mankind he had tried his best. "He tried for you, Homer…. And I yelled at him, and made him feel like a failure when he's not." She sobbed
(awwwww…)
A few hours passed as she listened to herself sob into the dry air of the room. Werry had not returned to his room, nor did she hear anything from outside the door. The lab was quiet and hummed softly.
Sage lay on her side, her cries had died down to a few sniffles. She felt like a child being sat in the corner, punished for her words, but she knew it was just her mind caging her in for her crimes once more. Slowly, she sat up and made her way to the door. Werry still hadn't returned, it had been hours.
Look what you did. He mind hissed, *You hurt him, like you hurt everyone." Her hands shook as she turned the knob. "I didn't mean to…" she whispered, pleading with the condemning voice in her head. One step and then another, Sage spoke into the darkness, her hands outstretched for some sort of guidance. "I'm sorry…so sorry… I didn't mean to."
Her hands reached nothing against the darkness. She kept walking forward and she soon slammed into the wall. The sound echoed softly through the halls, bouncing off of nothing and never returning to her ears.
