Gabe tilted his head a little.
"Are you doing good here?" he asked.
Alex shrugged his shoulders a little bit. "I-I guess…"
Gabe let out a little sigh.
"Sorry if I keep asking the same questions. I just… worry about you."
"It's okay." Alex said softly. "It's…been a long time since anyone worried about me." his eyes flickered down to the ground.
Gabe tilted his head down to Alex was looking at him.
"I'm sorry," Gabe said again. "You deserve to be cared for."
Alex gave a half-shrug. "Maybe." his voice was quiet. "But finding anyone who would care about…about someone like me…" A sodomite who spent time in Bedlam…
"You've already managed to find someone," Gabe pointed out.
He shrugged again. "Not forever." And not…you won't hold me and kiss me until I forget that I was ever afraid. Maybe you'll hold me if I ask, but you won't…I can't fall asleep with you and know you'll be there in the morning.
Gabe sighed a little.
"True. But… I know there must be someone else. Someone who will stay forever."
He closed his eyes for a moment. "No. Not for an insane sodo–" he broke off before he could say the rest out loud.
"Yes. Yes, for you." Gabe turned completely to face Alex.
Alex shrugged slightly, shaking his head. He didn't believe Gabe. Couldn't.
"They- He," Gabe said quietly, "will come into your life eventually. Maybe not right now, but some day."
Alex shrugged his shoulders again. "I already had my chance. And I screwed it up. I won't get another."
Gabe slowly took in Alex's words.
"I see. Just… try to wait, okay? Someone will come."
"Maybe in a perfect world where people like me could be open about it." Alex said softly, closing his eyes for a moment.
Gabe stayed quiet for a moment.
"Maybe some day," he said softly.
Alex shrugged his shoulders.
"Someday," Gabe said again. It was getting late- the sun was becoming obscured by the buildings around them, and even Gabe didn't like to be out at night.
"We should go home," he said softly.
Alex nodded, and got up, biting his lip and waiting for Gabe to begin walking.
Gabe got up too, staying close to Alex as they walked back to the apartment. The street itself seemed to shift, to something darker. Something dangerous.
Alex curled his shoulders in a little, sticking close to Gabe. He was a little afraid, unsure of anything.
Even Gabe didn't seem as… optimistic now, watching the shadows and allies with carefully guarded glances. Thankfully, nothing happened before they got back to the apartments, and Gabe led Alex back in.
Alex was quiet as they walked inside, sticking close to Gabe still.
