Kate looked up when he entered. She was sitting in a grey chair, her hands folded in her lap. She'd been staring at her hands. "I'm feeling well," she said. Her voice was edged hard.
"Good. Remember what we talked about yesterday?" He sat down in a chair.
"I think. Your name is August." The more the talked to him, the more her voice became lighter.
"Yes.", he nodded. "Do you remember what pets I have?"
"Cats… Two," she answered slowly.
"Yes! Good job! Do you remember who gave me my necklace?" He held it out for her to see.
"Your… Your grandmother." Her eyes were wide and unsure like she didn't know if the answer was right or not.
He nodded. "Do you know what I want to be when I grow up?"
"Uh… um…" She squinted her eyes, then shook her head.
"That's okay. We haven't worked on that yet. I want to be a singer." He desperately looked for recognition in her eyes.
Something flickered across her face. "You would sing for me…" she murmured. "You have a pretty voice."
"Yes! Thank you!", he said excitedly. His heart was racing and he hugged her, forgetting what the doctor said.
Kate gasped at the sudden contact. Dr. Vegran quickly entered, ready to pull August out if she became too hostile. Surprisingly, Kate relaxed and slowly hugged him back.
"I love you. Do you know that?", he asked softly.
"You told me that. You called me a meanie," she whispered.
"Cause you are one.", he whispered back. "My meanie." His tone of voice was playful, but he was overjoyed.
"No… you're my meanie." Her eyes drained from the grey color slowly.
"She's better! I'm so glad you're better!", he yelled to no one in particular. Tears of happiness fell down his bruised cheeks.
Kate gasped suddenly. "Auggie?! OhmiGod!" She hugged him tightly.
"I'm sorry that I couldn't save you.", he sobbed.
"Shh… shh… Calm down," she whispered in his ear, stroking his hair gently.
He didn't stop crying. "I had to live without you."
"Shh… You know that if people cry, I have to cry too!" she hissed, her voice very emotional.
He hugged her. "There's no reason to cry anymore." He tried to stop crying, but it wasn't really working.
Kate teared up. "OhmiGod, Auggie…"
