"That's what I wanted to talk to you about…" she said softly. "I think that she might want to see you again. I asked her what her favorite season was, and she said summer. Which was good. Then I asked when her birthday was and she said August 10th, then she asked about something else with August, like it was familiar."
He rushed past her to get in. "Kate! You're back!", he yelled.
Her eyes looked up and widened. She shifted away and looked at one of the aides. "Who is he?" she asked quietly.
Dr. Vegran followed August in, slower. "She might not remember you right away. Calm down and introduce yourself," she whispered to him.
"I'm August Ren. How are you feeling?" He was glad to talk to her, but disappointed that she didn't remember him. No, not disappointed. Fearful.
She eyed him skeptically. "I'm fine… How do you know my name?"
"I saw you're files. I'm hee to help you." Well, that wasn't a lie…
"Alright…" she said slowly. Then she narrowed her eyes. "August?"
"Yes, August.", he said hopefully.
For a minute, she looked shocked, then she became stoic again. "I don't know anyone named August."
Dr. Vegran tapped his shoulder. "Tell her about yourself," she whispered. "Something that will remind her of you but don't start out with anything too… strong."
He nodded and sat beside Kate's bed. "People who are close to me call me Auggie. I like singing, baseball, and working out. I have two cats, named Apollo and Night."
"Apollo is the boy," she said slowly. "Night is the girl."
"Yes!", he exclaimed. His face lit up. "Apollo is ginger and Night is black!"
She smiled faintly. "Yeah… I like black cats…"
"Ever been to a baseball game?" He smiled back.
"I… I think so," she said, trying to recall it.
"The cubs won.", he told her.
"Your necklace," she murmured.
"Who gave it to me?", he asked her.
She winced. "Uhhh… A family member?"
"My grandma…" He held his necklace in his hand.
She pressed her lips together and nodded.
"She's in a good place now." He refrained himself from telling her that she was dead. Unless she remembered.
"Not personally. I told you all about her." He was still holding the necklace.
Kate's eyes softened. "She's dead… I'm sorry."
