"Yeah, and that's why I should probably not complain about it going forward," Tohru laughed nervously, rubbing the back of his neck.
"It's not really fair to you, is it?"
"Yeah, and that's why I should probably not complain about it going forward," Tohru laughed nervously, rubbing the back of his neck.
"It's not really fair to you, is it?"
He laughed a little. "It's fine. We all have different struggles and such, I suppose." He shrugged his shoulders.
"I guess so," Tohru said with a shrug back.
He sipped at his drink, trying to hide the embarrassment he felt.
Maybe we should just… not talk anymore, he thought to himself, Gotta live with Davin after all, can't make him hate me or think I'm annoying.
He took a sip of his own drink, letting out a soft breath and looking out the window for a moment.
Tohru went back to the screen and paid for his meal, but he was still working on his drink in the meantime.
"Want me to walk with you to the interview?" He asked, "I still have a good bit of time before work."
"Sure. Just let me pay for my food and finish my drink, and we can get going." Having finished his sandwich, he paid, then sat back down.
"Yeah, of course," Tohru replied, finishing up his drink and setting the cup aside.
He stretched a bit, then uncrossed his legs under the table.
He sipped at his drink, keeping an eye on the time.
Until Davin finished, Tohru looked down at his device for a minute, catching up on some messages and news articles.
Davin eventually threw away the container for his drink. "Done."
Tohru looked up with a smile.
"Alright, we can go, then?"
He tucked his device away and threw away his container as well.
He nodded, smiling back. "Yeah, we can." He headed towards the door, holding it open for Tohru.
Tohru gave a quick nod and a "thank you" as Davin held the door open for him.
"Lead the way? I'm not exactly sure where the place you're going to is, honestly," he said.
Davin laughed quietly. "It's this way." He replied, leading Tohru down the street.
"Oh, alright," Tohru replied, "Looks like we'll pass by the bar I work at on the way. I'll point it out to you."
"Hey, Tohru! See you tonight!"
He looked up to see Vex jog past him, pulling his apron on.
"Oh, hey-" Tohru called after, his voice falling off a bit as Vex moved out of earshot.
Davin nodded, about to respond, but then went quiet when Vex called out. "Coworker?" He asked.
"Ah, yeah. Don't know much about him, truth be told. He's quiet most of the time. I'm actually quite shocked he stopped to say hi," Tohru replied, "But I suppose it's good to know he's at least sort of friendly towards me. I'm definitely not around to cause problems."
He thought for a second. He had been about to say something before- oh, right. Work.
"Yeah, that building he's going into is where we work."
He nodded a little. "Cool. I'm right down here, so long as I actually get the job." Once they reached the building, he stopped. "Well, I'll message you and let you know how I did.
"Okay, great!" Tohru replied, "Good luck, my guy. You'll do great."
He gave Davin a gentle pat on the back before stepping back and watching him go.
"Bye." He waved as he headed into the building, smiling faintly. Hopefully this interview would go well.
Tohru felt a bit of heat rise to his face as his hand left Davin's back and the other turned to leave.
I'm off duty for a few more hours… maybe I'll go hang out at the bar and buy a drink or two while I wait.
He went into the bar down the street and sat at one of the stools. Vex tilted his head a bit.
"What are you doing here? I thought you were hanging out with- whoever you were with a minute ago."
"My roommate," Tohru clarified, "I walked him to a job interview, was all."
"You were at lunch with him too," Kira called from across the counter, "I was walking to work a while ago to open shop. You two were in a diner, yeah?"
Tohru gave a slight nod.
"Picked up lunch on the way to the interview."
Kira snorted.
"So you're interested in him?"
Tohru frowned, "That's- untrue. Just get me a drink."
Davin checked in with the front desk, and then sat down to wait. He still wore the hoodie over his head in order to hide his horns; it wasn't really an option to get rid of it.
Tohru sat at the bar sipping on a pint of ale as Kira was back and forth between the one customer in the back corner who was day drinking.
Vex was doing dishes and eying Tohru occasionally as he did so.
"The way you dismissed Kira seemed more avoidant than anything. Not to pry, but he's cute. You're not interested?"
Kira glanced over from where she was preparing a drink for the customer.
Tohru lowered his voice to a whisper. "Yeah, I just don't wanna make things awkward. We're living together and- and that would be bad. Besides, I might get over it."
Kira giggled softly, almost knocking over the glass.
"Tohru, oh sweet, sweet child."
Vex gave a slight smile. "Hey, it's all good, man. I have been tthere. Do you at least know if he likes guys as well?"
Tohru gave a slow nod, then drank about half the glass in front of him.
"It's just not something I really wanted to pursue right now. Just went through a big move, a job change. Gods, it's a lot."
When the interview started, Davin was seated across from the interviewer, a human who seemed to be in their fourties, with a pair of glasses perched on their nose, and long dark hair drawn back in a low bun.
"So, Day Eltan?" The interviewer questioned. Davin nodded. He had used his last name for a first name, and the name of a family friend for his last. He didn't generally use his full, real name. Too easy to track. "It's good to meet you. It says here you last worked at…Hiren, on Corinth?"
"Yeah. It was a while ago, though. I've been staying with a friend for the past few months, but I figured it was time for a job."
"Mhm. And it says here that you don't take off that hood?"
"No. I have…extensive scarring on my face from an accident, and I prefer not to show it." Davin gave the explanation easily; it wasn't one most would question or demand proof of, and his false identity had "medical history" related to this fake scarring.
"Ah, of course, of course."
Vex and Tohru kept talking, in between Vex's serving customers and doing some light cleaning. Vex was a little older than Tohru, and had his share of relationship horror stories that they were able to laugh at together.
Tohru was very slightly tipsy after the one drink, and a little more loosened up and amiable. Kira went about her business once she got Tohru's little confession, letting the two men talk. And somehow, he felt a little better about his crush. just sitting here with Vex. Still, he wasn't in a place to confess anything to Davin, but it was at least bearable. Not completely and utterly humiliating like it was before.
"You can love someone without saying you love them," Vex said, setting another drink in front of Tohru, "It doesn't have to make things awkward at all, you know."
"But I want to kiss him… I don't think we can make that not awkward," Tohru murmured, trying to laugh, but only finding himself frustrated.
