The interviewer continued asking questions, and Davin answered them, as the interview went on. It didn't take too long before the interviewer stood, holding out his hand to shake. "Well, you've interviewed well. I've got to review some things, so expect a message in the next day or so about whether or not you got the job."
Davin smiled a little, shaking the man's hand. "Sounds good. Thank you for the opportunity."
"Of course."
Davin left, pausing outside the door and unsure where to go. He could go back to the apartment, or he could go to Tohru's job.
Tohru had his head resting on the counter as Vex finally let him be for a minute.
"That's all you're drinking, right?" Vex asked, "You have to work in a bit, you know."
"Yeah, that's all," he sighed, "I'll be fine by shift."
"Good. Don't be like Kira. She drinks on shift sometimes."
Kira snapped her gaze over to Vex. "I got hammered on the clock once."
"Shouldn't be doing it at all- but you're secret's safe with me… and Tohru."
Kira scoffed. "Riiiight, just try being as gorgeous as me in a bar that's usually full of gross, drunk men."
Tohru laughed a little. "I mean, she's right."
Davin finally decided to just head to Tohru's bar for a bit. Why not? He could get a drink and let the other man know what was going on. So he started walking, humming quietly to himself as he walked.
When Davin arrived, Tohru was still at the bar, watching his coworkers go about their business. He laid his head down on his hands.
Davin came in quietly, heading over to the bar after a moment, keeping the hood drawn over his head.
Vex stirred a bit when Davin walked in the door, and tapped the counter in front of Tohru to alert him to Davin's arrival.
Tohru suddenly wanted to hide. He did not want his nosy-ass coworkers and his crush in the same room. Not after that conversation.
He lifted his head up from the bar and turned to see Davin.
"Hey, how'd it go?" Tohru asked, gesturing for Davin to take a seat next to him.
Davin sat down, smiling. "Well, I think. I'll hear back in the next few days about whether or not I got the job." He replied, looking at Tohru.
"Good to hear," Tohru replied, "The only reason they took me in here was because they were desperate."
Vex laughed softly from where he leaned up against the bar.
"Yup. It's just us three and a student who works here part time. It's not good."
He laughed a little. "Mm, I see. The interviewer didn't say much about whether or not I'll get it, but I think I have a halfway decent chance. Galactic law prohibits them from not hiring me just because of my face." He waved a hand vaguely at his hood, then remembered that Tohru didn't know the cover story. "I told them about the scarring." He said to Tohru conversationally, as if this was something Tohru already knew the details of.
"Yeah, as long as they don't find something else to use as an excuse," Tohru agreed, "They shouldn't, but it'd be pretty fucked."
Scarring?
Tohru played along with it, not knowing what Davin was talking about at first, until he put two and two together.
"Can I treat you to a drink?" He asked, "I don't work for another hour and a half, so I don't mind you here at all. Even if you wanted to stick around while I'm working, I wouldn't mind that so much either."
Vex, still standing behind the counter, nearly dropped the glass, startled by how naturally Tohru seemed to be flirting. Was it flirting? Was he even doing it on purpose?
Davin blinked, unsure if Tohru was flirting or just being friendly. After a moment of considering, he settled on friendly. Had to be. He smiled a little. "A drink would be great, though I can pay for it myself."
"Ah, okay then," Tohru said.
Vex set the glass in the stack and looked over to Davin.
"Just let me know what you want, when you're ready," he said, pointing at the menu up above the bar.
"Just about anything's good, but Vex makes pretty good mixed drinks especially," Tohru told him.
Davin looked up at the menu, considering for a moment, then ordered, another easy smile flickering over his face.
Vex made the drink in front of the two and slid it over to Davin when it was done.
"So, you two are roommates, you said?" Vex asked, trying to make easy conversation without immediately prying too much.
Tohru gave a simple nod, then looked over to Davin, not sure how much he wanted to elaborate.
Davin took a sip of the drink, nodding. "Mhm, we are." He confirmed, adjusting his hood a little but not taking it off.
"Yup, we're over in the Torchwood area," Tohru added, "Renting out an apartment over there because neither of us can really afford the rent of a place on our own. But it works out."
Vex nodded and leaned back against the counter.
"Cool, cool. I've been hopping between apartments between the last few years. Can't seem to keep a good living arrangement very long. Did spend some time in Torchwood myself. Not half bad compared to some of the places around here, though."
Davin nodded. "I did research about the districts, and Torchwood was better than most of the other districts we could afford."
"So you're not from around here either," Vex guessed, "Tohru said he was a bounty hunter and a traveler before. What about you?"
Tohru gave Davin a nervous glance. They really needed to keep a consistent story together now.
Davin blinked. "Oh. I mostly traveled around too. I ran into Tohru in a bar, and we got to… talking, and it grew from there, I guess." Not technically a lie, and close enough to the truth to remember.
"We were both moving to this planet as it was," Tohru added, "The arrangement made sense, was all."
Vex gave a nod.
"Gotcha. I'm a local. Never left this place, but it might be fun to one day."
Davin nodded. "There's a lot of space out there to explore." he said, a faint, melancholy smile twitching over his features for a moment. "Lots of different places."
"Some places definitely nicer than others," Tohru agreed.
Vex chuckled. "I think I'd take a gamble with this dump."
Tohru tilted his head. "That's how I felt about my home planet. Sure, it had pretty landscapes, but a lot of the people were damn intolerable."
Davin nodded a little, not adding anything about his own planet. His was shrouded in gold, a mass gravesite for the rest of his people.
"Guess we all wanna live anywhere but home, huh?" Vex laughed, "Did you at least find what you were looking for? New horizons? Money? Love?"
Tohru chuckled a bit.
"Nope. But it's better than there at least. I've met some pretty cool people along the way, too, so that's always a plus."
He shot a glance at Davin.
Davin smiled faintly. He would rather live home than anywhere, but it was impossible. "Yeah. That's a plus." He agreed, looking over at Tohru.
