I have a weird occurrence regarding racism.

I experience it as a Hispanic woman, merely for being Hispanic, but as soon as I specify that I am not Mexican and that I am Costa Rican/Cuban most people back off. I've had a gentleman apologize to me actually for being rude. But there are times when I do not specify and get screamed at.
It's so odd.

What's so much better about being a different kind of Hispanic? I still speak the same language that person X called 'dirty', I still have the features that person X called 'less than human', I still celebrate the culture that person X called 'worthless'… so what is the difference?

Because the Costa Rican beaches are gorgeous and white people's favorite place to vacation? Because all the best Hispanic dance clubs are Cuban?

It's not odd. It's bullshit.

@Trix

I think it's stereotypes, and that honestly is what racism is. A bunch of stereotypes regarding ethnicity. Society and people will judge you on everything, including cultural background because they associate a certain trait to certain groups and they give these groups freaking labels.

My theory is that it has far more to do with difference than race, since race no longer exists as we have interbred so much. And it does go to all discrimination. It’s jus that it’s far easier to pick out a brown man than a Christian.

But why is it so much 'easier' to hate on someone that is not white? There is literally no difference except one person has more melanin.

@Trix

These are simply theories, but in America the majority of the population is white, so perhaps it's just more common to hate on minorities.
And if we want to go back in history, slavery has already established this principle that white is the superior race. People who weren't African-Americans were treated as inferior, too.

The most ridiculous thing ever mutually agreed upon by humanity was that "White Is Pure"

I say it has nothing to do with skin color. They are obviously different and so are the first first thing you would notice about a black man is that he is black. Not because he is black. But because he is different.

did i hear racism?
Racism is systematic! At least, our current view/definition of racism is. It isn't simply disliking someone based on their appearance, which is stupid and a form of racism, but it's more like being wary of someone/discriminating against someone who has been historically discriminated against based on pre-existing biases and the way a society is structured. Racism against Mexicans is becoming more prevalent because of the attention placed on the border crisis and Donald Trump's platform (us vs them narrative). Racism against Black people can be traced back to slavery and Jim Crow, of course, and it has roots in classism as well. I could go on and on about the history of racism, but the real kicker is how white people, who are in the position of power, react to racism.

There was the whole colorblind ideology, which largely ignored hurdles POC had to face. Now there's a new thing called racial apathy, where people acknowledge that racism exists, but just don't care that much. That stems from the us vs them narrative. Anyways, I love talking about this stuff, so I'm now a member of this debate chat I totally haven't been stalking for the last week.

@GameMaster group

I think racism and stereotypes are two different things. I (thankfully) don’t experience much racism where I am but I’ve been bullied based on stereotypes many times. Despite being one of the best students at my old school, kids called me dumb blonde. I think this is kinda funny because my hair is quite dark to be called blonde so I assume they were looking really hard for something to criticize. At my new school the stereotypes are more academically inclined. The school is made up mostly of a bunch of different Asians. There is a stereotype that Asian are smarter or good at math. For many kids a B or lower is a fail. People used to can it ‘an Asian fail’ but we’ve evolved to call it ‘a (name of school) fail’. Stereotypes aren’t always inaccurate unfortunately.

@Trix

Stereotypes are based off of truths, but to classify an entire group under one label and treating everyone in the group harshly for it is wrong.

@Althalosian-is-the-father book

^^^ That is true because of the history of America. But racism in itself started with the lowering of others. One of the easiest ways to start that is by saying “Look at them, they are not like us.” From there you can get to systematically killing them.

Stereotypes aren't always based off of truths, more off people's perceptions. For example, Black people are still stereotyped as not as smart as white people, even though this assumption was from slavery and the idea that literacy = liberation.

We are way past 'systematically killing them'. We are at the point where rights are taken away and people (children) are being tortured and humiliated as human beings.

What was your answer to where rights came from again? I imagine In was in line with the morality statement of ‘found in nature and carried by all cultures ‘.
