Esmé was born in Denver, Colorado. Her early years were simple and carefree, and she was rather popular at school. She had a wonderful, caring family who loved her very much and a little sister named Clarissa whom she would do anything to protect. By the time she was in tenth grade, she had a boyfriend named Jimmy. He was a very good person, but one day, when he was riding his bike home from school, a man came out of an alleyway and slit his throat, stealing anything that Jimmy had with him that was valuable. Esmé was left in an inconsolable state of grief, but eventually managed to continue with her life. One day, when she was walking down that same road in the middle of a snowstorm (it had been five years since Jimmy had been killed), a lightning bolt struck her and gave her her extraordinary powers.
