Separated from his family during the Migration when he was young, Star Swirl arrived in Equestria hoping to make a life for himself.
Later on, Queen Liliane arrived and taught him all she knew about magic. During the Red Eye, Liliane had to leave and return to her homeland, so she left her three young daughters in the care of Star Swirl and The Five Wizards.
Star Swirl tried his best to mentor the girls, and teach them about magic like Liliane did for him. But he was not a father figure, and the task of parenting them was ultimately left to the other wizards.
Because of the knowledge given to him by Liliane, and his role in the movement of the sun and moon, he grew up with a rather inflated sense of ego. This was only bolstered by the formation of the Pillars of Equestria.
