Born in The Netherlands sometime in the 1910s, Van was born as Faust Malbourne. Born a rather frail child, his parents were concerned he may not live past his fifth birthday. But he did, and began to surprise them by how much stronger he was getting over the years. At the age of eighteen he was drafted into the first World War, then eventually dragged into the second. His hometown had been bombed by the Germans, killing the only family he'd ever had. His PTSD was getting bad enough as he would slip through the trenches and kill his opponents without a sound, but the pounding in his head got worse and worse. He had been captured after killing an enemy one day, and was injured when escaping. He dragged himself through an empty, cold, wet trench, muttering to himself and just asking for some kind of help from whoever may be listening. But...it wasn't his injury that killed him. It was starvation/malnutrition.
Faust died in that trench, but woke up into a world of darkness. Like Ringo, Faust was approached by none other than the Dark Lord himself and offered Van with a new opportunity to serve him. With only slight recollection of his past he agreed and was reborn a demon. He developed stealth powers.
