He relaxed. "Of course. Always."

I leant on this shoulder and closed my eyes, relaxing for once. I smiled slightly. “Luke” I said. “Do you know what love feels like?”

Luke took a deep breath, savoring the fresh air. "Interesting question. If I had to describe it, I'd say it feels like the warmest sunlight, the kind that makes your bones relax and washes away any pain or worry you're caught up in. It's the thing that can make you smile, no matter how bad things are." He stopped and shrugged. "I don't know if that makes any sense. That's just my perception."

“Oh. Have you ever been in love?” Now I was curious.

His smile faded slightly. "I was…but it was a long time ago. She didn't love me as much as I thought, and things went south. I found out recently that she died of infection in the slums." He shook his head. "It's not a big deal anymore. I shouldn't have even brought it up."

‘No, it was my fault I shouldn’t have asked” I pulled away slightly and faced the east, the wind was blowing ever so gently. I sighed

He hesitated. "Hey…don't worry about it. Every day's a new day, right? I don't know about you, but I haven't given up on finding that feeling yet."

“But what’s the point.” I said “what if, you loved them but they dont love you back, why go through all that heartache…. what if they only see you for somthing you’re not” the last part was said quiter then the rest.

“Besides I’ve never been in love, never had someone love me so I dont even know when i might have that feeling”

Luke opened his mouth, about to say something, but then changed his mind. "Ah, Maddie, I don't know. The world's a crazy, confusing place. The way I see it, if you have a chance at happiness, you've always gotta fight for it, whatever the risk. It's the only thing that keeps me going, sometimes."
(Sadly, gotta go take a walk now, be back later)

I stood up. “But how? You know all this of this. You’ve experienced it, felt it. I haven’t, how would i know if I loved someone.” I turned around. “If I loved you?” I said very quietly

Luke stood up as well and came up beside you, hands in pockets. "Give yourself time. You'll find out. I don't wanna try to tell you how to feel." He smiled again, a warm, sure smile. "But I will say that I'm glad I met you, Maddie. And I will always be here for you, just like I promised. Okay?"

I nodded and faced him, placing my hand on his cheek. “Thank you again Luke”

"You too." He reached out, his fingers brushing yours for a heartbeat. But then, his gaze turned sharply out over the trees. He stiffened slightly, his eyes turning hard and watchful. "Did you hear that?"

“N..no” out of instinct I grabbed the closest thing to my hand, his “what.. did you hear?”

"Maybe nothing." He scanned the treeline carefully. His whole attitude had changed, from sweet and gentle to cold and wary. He wore the suspicion like a second skin. "I don't think we should stay out here in the open. It's getting dark, and more of those things could be out hunting. Let's get back inside."

“You go, I wanna check something” I gave his hand a gentle squeeze, letting him know I would be fine.
