(I would love it if you could be the governor uwu) The door was opened by a maid, who led Kana and Jair to a large room. In the room, there was a large table with enough food to feed the entire city. At the head of the table sat the governor.
(alright! What exactly is he wanting to meet with Kana about?)
Jair pulled out a seat for Kana, and stood behind her seat, silent.
The governor looked up. "Welcome, Queen Kana. And…guard, consort, whoever you are." He waved a hand in Jair's direction.
(Kana is actually meeting with him to basically tell him to chill the frick out since he isn't being a good governor. He wants to meet her for a promotion, but he'll never get that of course)
Kana sat down. "Thank you, Governor." She looked around and frowned. The food on the table should be going to the citizens, not to him. "Are you expecting other guests?"
(ah right, okay. Thanks)
The governor laughed softly. "No, I am not. This is for us." He replied, gesturing to the table. "Now eat." He started to eat. "Oh, your consort may eat as well, if he wishes."
"I'm not her consort. I am her guard, and i will remain standing." Jair replied.
The corner of Kana's mouth twitched. She did not eat the food, she only sat there and waited for the governor to finish eating.
The governor looked at her, and wiped his mouth on his napkin. "Will you not eat, your highness?" He asked, raising his eyebrows.
Jair remained silent, watching and listening.
She frowned. "No. The food that you have been hoarding belongs to the people." She crossed her arms. "Which is one of the reasons why I am here."
The governor sighed. "Oh? They keep some of their food. And they can always buy back any more that they need." He said.
Yes, at exorbitant prices! Jair thought, but didn't interrupt. It wasn't his place to say anything, unless it was necessary.
Kana laughed in disbelief, "Really? Can they afford said food?" She shook her head. "I'm quite disappointed in you, governor. When I appointed you, I had hoped you would transform this small village into a prosperous city," Kana looked outside a window to her left. "But, when I walked through the streets, I saw starving citizens and crumbling houses."
"That is not my fault!" The governor protested. "They are the ones allowing their homes to fall into disrepair, and it isn't my fault if they aren't making enough money to pay for things!"
Jair's fist clenched slightly. He remembered well a time when he had been a starving young child, desperate for any food he could get his hands on. It hadn't been his fault, and it certainly hadn't been his parents fault.
Kana rolled her eyes and began to raise her voice, "If that's truly how you feel, then I clearly need to demote you. You have blatantly defied me time and time again!" She was starting to lose her temper, an event that almost never happened.
The governor pressed his lips together. "Well, if your orders made any sense, I would follow them."
"Don't disrespect your ruler." Jair said, in a mildly threatening tone.
The governor's eyes darted to Jair, then back to Kana. "I see. Your attack dog going to keep me in my place, your highness?"
Kana took a deep breath and stood up, trying her hardest not lunge across the room and choke him to death. "You will be replaced by someone who is more capable and apparently," she glanced over at him and smirked, "someone who is at least as smart as a barn animal."
The governor stood as well, eyes dark. "Is that how you're going to rule, then? By replacing anyone who dares have a different opinion than you?" He questioned angrily.
Jair was silent, keeping a wary eye on both the governor and Kana.
Kana knew she needed to end this as soon as possible. But she couldn't resist getting the last word in. "No. You are just a worthless man who can't even do his duty. Thus, I must replace you." She smiled at him for the first and last time, and began to walk out of the room.
(did you want him to attack her/have his men attack her?)
The governor glared daggers at her.
Jair waited for a moment, then began to follow Kana out of the room, hand resting on his sword.
(I think it would be interesting to have the governor attack her, but it's your call uwu)
Kana looked at Jair and gave him a half-smile. She walked over to the front of the house and started to leave
(alright! :) )
The governor murmured something to a servant, glaring after them.
Within seconds, armed men were swarming towards Jair and Kana.
Jair stiffened, drawing his sword. "Your highness. Get in the corner." He pushed her lightly into the corner, standing in front of her with his sword drawn. No one attacked yet, but he knew it would be a matter of seconds, maybe minutes, until they did.
Kana put her hand on the hilt of her dagger. She knows Jair can take them, but she always felt bad whenever he did have to protect her. Like right now, for example.
The men attacked. Luckily, it wasn't quite all at once, or even Jair's skill wouldn't have been enough to fight them off. His sword flashed in the dim lighting. Mostly he attacked to disarm and knock out, trying not to kill these men unless he had to. His heightened senses and speed served him well in that.
Kana watched him fight off the men, eyes glistening with wonder. It was truly interesting, his fighting style. And he would always avoid killing people. Kana loved that fact. Benevolence was a rare trait, and yet her own guard had it.
Jair continued fighting until the men retreated, leaving a ring of the unconscious, and a few dead. He kept his sword out, eyes flashing to the men. "We really should have taken a carriage." He said to Kana. "Come on." He led her towards the gate. The men didn't try to attack as they went.
When they had reached the gate, Kana was slightly out of breath. She was slightly embarrassed by this, so she averted his gaze. "Thank you, Jair. For defending me," Kana spoke quietly, unsure if he could hear her or not.
He gave a small smile. "You're welcome." He replied quietly. "Now come. We should leave." His eyes darted around the street. "Do you want to still stay in this town, in an inn or something, or would you prefer to walk back tonight?"
She shook her head and sighed, "staying in this town overnight is risky. But so is wandering alone at night." She looked at Jair and inspected him, "Are you hurt? How are you feeling?"
