"We'll be okay Charlotte. He isn't here and you're on your own now. You can make your own destiny, prove to yourself who you really are. It'll be fun."
"We'll be okay Charlotte. He isn't here and you're on your own now. You can make your own destiny, prove to yourself who you really are. It'll be fun."
“I know.” she nodded. “I'm glad that I'm so far from him, it'll be good for me. And it will be fun to remake myself.” she agreed. “Thank you, Rodney. It helps to hear someone else say things like that.”
"Exactly! There's a good attitude to have. I know mine wasn't that good when I started but it's nice to see someone who has one."
“Again, thank you.” Charlotte smiled a little as she looked back up at him, blushing softly. “What was your attitude when you started traveling?”
Rodney thought for a minute. "It was pretty bad. I grew up not knowing who I was because I had no one to show me how to be a person. So I set out looking for vengeance, searching for one of them so I could tell them to their face how their ignorance ruined my life. Never did get to."
Charlotte's eyes widened slightly but didn't judge. “Honestly, it might be a good thing that you didn't. You might have done something you regret.”
Rodney shrugged. "Maybe. I'll never know. I still kinda want to but it's not the burning ball of rage it was when I started."
“Understandable. Maybe, if you still run into one of them, you can still show them how much better you are now and that you made it without their help.” she suggested with a little shrug.
"That's true. I can only hope I get that far. And I can only hope that you're there with me to keep me from doing or saying anything stupid when I do."
“I’ll do my best.” she promised. “If they deserve it, I won’t stop you. But I will try to help you when you need it.”
"Good. Because I don't know how I'm going to react if I ever see them again. That's also assuming they look anything like they did when I last saw them."
Charlotte giggled softly at that and nodded. “And if they recognize you. Who knows how much you've changed since they saw you.”
"My point exactly. We've all probably changed a lot since we last saw each other. Who knows if we'll ever find each other again. And even if we don't, does it really matter?"
“If we don't then, probably not.” she agreed, nodding slightly. “But if we do, then I'll be with you.”
"Let's hope so. The future is unknown but the present we can control. One simply has to reach out and take it."
“How poetic you make that sound.” she sighed. “But I look forward to grabbing it with you.”
Rodney shrugged with a smile. "When you spend so much time out in the woods with the only thing to entertain you being your own thoughts, you learn to have a philosophical outlook on life."
Charlotte nodded, smiling back. “So I noticed. But it's not a bad thing. I think it actually shows how intelligent you are.”
"Aw, how sweet of you. I was a pretty stupid kid so that's an extreme compliment. I find you pretty intelligent too. It's refreshing."
“I doubt that. You probably just learn things differently than others. That doesn't make you stupid… Then or now.” she smiled encouragingly.
"Maybe so but I certainly wasn't smart. If I was, I wouldn't have had to become an adventurer. I just wanted to be good at something."
Charlotte opened her mouth to reply… but closed it when she couldn't think of anything to say. Not wanting to seem rude, she gave a thoughtful hum and nodded slightly. “I think I see your point.” she finally acknowledged. “But it still doesn't mean you were stupid.”
"Whatever you say." He chuckled, settling back in his seat. "Think you'll wanna move on tonight or is this where we're calling it?"
“I'm not sure.” she shrugged. “I admit I enjoy sleeping outside… but the idea of staying in a bed again, as well as seeing some of the town is tempting.”
"Then we'll stay here. It'll give you a chance to truly explore a town outside of your own. I think you'll like it."
