“True but that's an understandable situation.” she replied, ignoring the slight shiver of her wings when he mentioned losing a member of staff.
“True but that's an understandable situation.” she replied, ignoring the slight shiver of her wings when he mentioned losing a member of staff.
"Then of course there's the situations where there are no real reasons for the dip in quality and people are just lazy. Who knows."
Charlotte nodded with a hum. “And those are also poorly managed most of the time.” she added, thinking about how she would never let her inn fall like that. Which is why she left it in capable and trusted hands.
"Innocent until proven guilty. But some places truly are just bad. They're not run badly to purposefully do bad, it's just what they make tastes terrible."
Charlotte giggled a little, impressed by how many philosophical replies Rodney had. “True. Of course, I doubt that many people try to fail that badly. Some people just aren't cut out for that kind of work.”
"That's true. They try and I know they do. But some just can't cook to save their lives and it really shows." He shrugged with a grin.
“Oh, I know. There are reasons why I didn't let certain people into the kitchen without supervision or even at all.” she nodded.
"Oh really? Like who? I guess I've never really asked about your staff. What are they like? Who isn't allowed in the kitchen? Now I'm curious."
“No, you haven't.” she acknowledged, smiling up at him. “But honestly, there's only three people who fall in that category. Tony, Maggie, and Rachel. Poor Tony burns toast. Maggie's not bad but has a slight problem judging how much seasoning goes into certain dishes. And Rachel… No. Just, no. We tried once and it was a disaster.” she shook her head almost sadly at the memory.
"Sounds like a rough crew. Well, who is allowed in the kitchen? Who helps you out in there? I'm sure you're not the only one."
“They have their good points, cooking just isn't one of them for those three. Maggie is able to help out but my best kitchen assistant is Johnny. He has a natural talent for cooking.” she smiled.
"What are they like?" Rodney leaned forward on the table, watching and listening with a soft smile.
“They're all pretty great. Nice people and hard workers… Good friends. I often felt like we could tell each other anything.” she smiled softly. “Tony's actually got a great sense of humor while Maggie can easily calm down anyone who might be wanting to start a fight. And Rachel is the best listener if you need to get something off your chest.”
Rodney nodded along with her talking, motioning for her to continue when she stopped. He liked listening to her, to hearing her talk about the people she cared about.
Charlotte's smile brightened at the encouragement and continued. “They all know their jobs well and are good at them so… I guess that made it easier for me to start traveling with you. Max is running the place now and I know she can handle it.” she chuckled. “Sometimes I swear that girl is part dragon.”
"Are you absolutely sure she isn't?" Rodney chuckled. "But regardless, go on. Anyone else? How long have they all been there?"
“No, I’m not sure one way or the other but she's threatened to punch Markus in the face multiple times if that tells you anything.” Charlotte giggled. “But Max started the same time I did. Then I believe Tony was next and has been working for… eight years. And Maggie's at five but I'm having a hard time remembering when Rachel joined us.”
"Who's your favorite? Are you like the staff mom or does that title fall on someone else?"
“I wouldn't say that I have a favorite… But like I said me and Max have been working together for longer than the others.” she shrugged. “And I'm not actually sure who would be the staff mom. We are a family in a way but… Johnny is definitely a big brother to most. And they all know that I'm a fairy.”
Rodney hummed in acknowledgement. "What are they each like? Does anyone have nicknames for each other? Any memorable accidents?"
“Well, I already told you about most of them… but I have plenty of memories of all of them. Good, embarrassing, and not so good.” she admitted. “Umm, we don't really use nicknames, other than the one I've been using. Johnny just prefers being called that instead of John or Johnathan. And Max never gave anyone another name to use. Once Markus made the mistake of calling Rachel, “Rach”. Fortunately, that was a one-time incident.” she smirked briefly.
"If she got Markus to stop calling her Rach, why don't you give him the Rachel treatment for Charlie?" Rodney raised a curious eyebrow.
Charlotte sighed and set down her cup beside her. “Because I'm not Rachel. For a while, I didn't mind. But now I realize that's because of the way he said it at the time… It was almost charming. Now he does it on purpose just to be an ass.” she nearly growled. “Plus, you saw how many officers he had when he was looking for you. He's in charge of the more than just them and in line for a promotion. If I did now what she did then… I’d most likely be in jail.”
"Ah, so that's why. Regardless, you can't let people like that push you around. Especially not out here. This world will chew you up and spit you out if you let it. Don't worry, I'll be there to help you out."
“I know.” she whined softly. “I'm better at telling people to back off when I'm at work or if I don't know them but… Markus is just a toxic person to me.” she sighed, pulling her legs up to her chest again.
