Zanna smiled as Morrigan offered Jay yet another chocolate bar. Then their stomach growled and Zanna realized, that they hadn't eaten at all today. Except for breakfast, but that was just toast.
Zanna smiled as Morrigan offered Jay yet another chocolate bar. Then their stomach growled and Zanna realized, that they hadn't eaten at all today. Except for breakfast, but that was just toast.
Jay was able to hold onto the bar, but he wasn't hungry. He set it next to him, staring blankly.
"Hey, if your not going to eat that can I have it?" Zanna asked.
Morrigan noticed both the growl of Zanna’s stomach and Jay’s numbness. She pulled yet another chocolate bar out and offered it to Zanna, unsure what to do about Jay.
"Thanks," they grabbed the chocolate bar and began eating it.
Jay could barely hear Zanna, but he pushed the chocolate towards them with a shaking hand. He slapped himself out of the blue, hard, like he had earlier. He hissed in pain, but he seemed to be a little more 'there'.
Morrigan started, instinctively reaching forward but then stopping herself.
Zanna finished the chocolate bar, and looked to see Jay hit himself and Morrigan reach for him. Zanna was about to say something when Morrigan stopped. They smiled and walked back over towards Jay.
"You good dude?" they asked him.
Jay nodded, rubbing the side of his face. "Yeah… s-sorry, it's the only way I can snap myself out of flashbacks…"
"I understand," Zanna nodded, "But maybe we could find a less painful way of doing it?"
"I dunno… usually it was parents who snapped me out of it like that. Although I don't think they knew I was having flashbacks to earlier times… I've just carried on the tradition I suppose."
"Well, it's a bad tradition to have," Zanna thought, "Maybe we could make a new one?"
Jay shrugged. "I don't know of any other way to snap out of flashbacks."
"I'm thinking if pain brings you out of it, maybe we could use just a smaller amount of pain to do it. Like snapping a rubber band against your wrist."
"I'm not sure whether that would be enough, but I could try it." He pulled his hand away from his face. "Am I bleeding?"
“No, thank god.” Morrigan sighed, handing him a rubber band. “Try this.”
He took the rubber band and put it around his wrist. His wrists were very thin, so the rubber band was a bit loose, but hopefully it would do the job. He stretched it taut to test it, letting go and wincing a bit when it made contact with his skin. It stung, but he still wasn't sure whether it would be enough.
“Hope it works for you.” She shoot him a small smile, fiddling with one of her cartilage piercings.
"If it doesn't work tell us and we'll figure out something else," Zanna also smiled.
"Okay…" Jay fidgeting with the band, spinning it around his wrist and snapping it a few times mindlessly.
Morrigan let her eyes fall shut, exhausted.
Jay didn't want to break the rubber band so soon, so he looked for other ways to channel his anxiety. Well, what usually helps? Not thinking about it. Well, it's a bit late for that now. Right, fidgeting. With what? You don't want to break the band, and there's not really anything else in here… Right… No, calm down. Calm down. You're fine just relax. Yeah, relaxing. I don't think I've ever fully relaxed. His heart was racing now, and it was getting more difficult for him to sit still. Finally, he stood up and started to pace the room, holding his breath to see whether that would slow his heartbeat.
"You doing okay Jay?" Zanna saw him pacing the room.
"Yeah… fine… fine…" He muttered as he circled the room. What are you doing? Just sit down, relax. If I sit down, then I'll get more anxious! Yes, but you're making a scene. I can't sit down right now! Sit! No! Why not? Just be quiet!
"Okay," Zanna stood up. They mimicked Jay's patterns in a hope to make him feel less isolated.
