(Lock?)
(Lock?)
(??)
("He felt sympathy for Jacob after having a good lock at him.")
Hunter raised his eyebrows, but didn’t say anything. He motioned for Kenzie to enter first before following after her. He felt sympathy for Jacob after having a good lock at him. Jacob looked like he hadn’t slept or eaten in a while.
“I wish we had met on better terms myself,” Hunter finally got himself to talk. “I apologize for not coming here sooner.”
Kenzie walked inside and looked around the familiar room, taking a seat on the couch.
Nothing has changed. Whether that's a good thing or not… We'll see, I suppose.
Jacob shook himself out of his daze and shut the door behind Hunter and Kenzie.
"That's certainly all right. I'm sure my dau– cough stepdaughter had her reasons for not bringing you by." Blinking, he realized that he had forgotten to introduce himself. "I'm so sorry, I forgot to introduce myself," he started, making his way to sit in the recliner across from where his stepdaughter sat. "I'm Jacob Vetter. Um… Would either of you like anything to drink? McKenzie knows where everything is, or I can get it for you myself."
(Jacob tends to almost be overly polite, btw. He's generally really chill; basically, the opposite of Kenzie's dad.)
(I just realized that I accidentally created a character whose initials are BOO…)
(Lol)
("He felt sympathy for Jacob after having a good lock at him.")
(Whoops 😂😂 my bad.)
Hunter shook his head.
“I’m good, thank you.” He replied, walking over to where Kenzie sat and took a seat next to her. Everyone fell silent, making it a bit awkward for Hunter. He looked at Kenzie, who was staring at her lap without saying a word. Jacob, too, remained silent.
Just then, his phone began to ring.
“My apologies” he muttered, taking out his phone. It was Leo.
“Sorry, I have to take this,” he said to both of them before turning to Kenzie. “I’ll be right back.”
Kenzie nodded. "Go ahead. I'll be fine," she assured Hunter, letting him go find somewhere to talk privately.
Hunter stepped out of the door, hitting the answer button on his phone.
“Leo, what’s up?” He said into the phone.
”Dude, where’s your girlfriend?” Leo asked instead.
“With me, why?”
”Willow’s been trying to reach her since forever. She’s even been to Kenzie’s house. She’s worried sick, especially after hearing her mother died.”
Hunter inhaled deeply, muttering a curse.
“She’s with me, at her stepfather’s house,” he said slowly. “Look, I can’t talk for long. I have to go back inside. But do me a favor, yeah? I need to cheer her up. You have my cabin keys— the one on the mountainside. Do whatever you need to do to plan a small party, just to make her feel better. I’ve already ordered the Trio to prepare the food and drinks. Your job is the planning and stuff. You have until sun down to prepare. Deal?”
”… A party? I can deal with that. Sundown? I can work with that, too. Would it be just us four or do you want to invite other people?”
“Just us,” Hunter replied. “Anyway, work on it. I’m hanging up. It better not be over-the-top, Leo.”
(Lol. Kenzie will be touched.
Imma say she turned her phone off, which is why she hasn't been getting calls recently. Except for the one from Leah.)
~ Meanwhile ~
Jacob cleared his throat, drawing Kenzie's attention away from the lock of her hair she had been absentmindedly braiding and unbraiding.
"I, um… I just want you to know that, ah, I'm always here for you if you need anything. My doors are always open to you," he said awkwardly.
Kenzie nodded slowly. "Thanks. And, uh, I'm sorry I haven't really called either of you recently. I've just been kind of…distracted, I guess… I know that's no excuse, and I really wish I had been able to tell Mama about Hunter and I, but I just wanted to apologize for it," she rambled.
"It's okay, McKenzie. I know she would have loved to hear about it. He was one of your friends from high school, wasn't he?" Jacob asked.
"Yeah… He and a few others were."
"Well, I'm glad that you're happy. You are happy with him, right?"
Kenzie smiled softly. "Definitely. He's probably the best thing that's happened to me in a while."
"Good, good." Jacob nodded slowly. He looked thoughtful for a moment, then smiled. "Do you remember that time we went up north, and you, your mother, and I were all playing Monopoly?"
"And Mama randomly shouted–"
"You look like a little baby! Get. In. My. Belly!" they chorus, laughing.
"Oh my gosh, that was so hilarious!" Kenzie exclaimed.
When Hunter walked back inside, he heard laughter. He smiled. His girl had finally laughed heartedly.
“I’m back,” he said as he walked his way towards Kenzie. “Hope I didn’t interrupt.”
Kenzie looked up, her eyes sparkling with laughter as she remembered other times her mother had had some pretty good lines.
"No, we were just reminiscing," she explained, smiling up at Hunter.
Hunter grinned at the familiar, happy spark in Kenzie’s eyes as he took a seat.
“Well, don’t mind me,” he said. “Keep going. I like to hear the sound of your laughter.”
Kenzie blushed slightly before turning back to Jacob.
"What about when we were all playing Uno, and I kept winning and she kept losing," she started, already starting to giggle as she remembered. "And the last round we played, I won again, and she picked up her cards and threw them at me!"
Jacob laughed and Kenzie joined in, both of them laughing so hard that tears came to their eyes.
(Bumping.)
(So since Jordan seems to have disappeared completely, I’m just going to assume Leo’s been his best friend since childhood and not after Hunter’s fall out with Jordan)
Hunter leaned back in his seat, staring at Kenzie. He seemed to do that a lot, more after becoming her boyfriend. A day ago, she had been lifeless, her eyes dead. Now, she was laughing. Her dark eyes were shinning. Her troubles seemed to have disappeared. He was glad that he was here for her, that he had been with her when she got the news. Now that he didn’t have any reason to join in, he found himself lost in his own thoughts, the chamber of memories he’d pushed behind when his world collapsed. Hunter shook his head, trying to push away the unwanted, dark thoughts. This wasn’t about him anymore. He once again fixed his attention back on Kenzie, getting lost in the way she spoke rather than the labyrinth in his mind.
(Lol. Okay, yeah, makes sense.
Aw, Hunter.)
"Oh, and do you remember the time she held me down and tickled me so hard that I couldn't breathe?" Kenzie asked, breathless from laughing and subconsciously leaning into Hunter's side.
Jacob laughed. "And then I did the same to her to pay her back for you."
"And once we had both caught our breath, we both tickled you!"
They laughed again, and Kenzie sighed.
"Oh, those were good times," she said reminiscently.
(I have no clue as to what I should do with Hunter now.)
“Tickling seems to run in the family, I see,” Hunter commented, not knowing what else to say, remembering the time Kenzie attempted to tickle him and failed because he wasn’t ticklish. At least, not in the places she’d tried. “Tell me about baby Kenzie. Was she as troublesome as she is now?”
(Lol. They could leave. I'm out of ideas, too.
Literally, everyone in my family is ticklish somewhere. Even my guy cousin. It's hilarious because he refused to give me a hug once, so I tickled him until he gave in, and now he has to give me one every day he sees me.)
"I am not troublesome!" Kenzie exclaimed in mock offense.
Jacob chuckled and shook his head. "Sorry, but I don't know any baby Kenzie stories. Only stories from age 12 and up," he explained. Standing, he crossed the room to a bookshelf. "I think her mom had some baby pictures over here, though…"
Kenzie scowled at Jacob's back. There were some embarrassing pictures in those baby books, and she didn't exactly think Hunter needed to see them.
Hunter grinned mischievously.
“Pictures? I’d love to see some.” He said, shooting Kenzie a grin as Jacob went to get the albums. He couldn’t wait to embarrass Kenzie. And to see her baby self, of course.
(Should we skip to after they've looked at pictures.)
Jacob chuckled. "Well, I'm going to warn you, there are a lot of pictures," he said as he pulled out the baby books. When he was finished, he had a stack of three large books.
(Bumping.)
(Sure xD)
Hunter grinned playfully at Kenzie.
“I have my phone to take pictures,” he said teasingly. “Just for the fun of it.”
Kenzie glared at Hunter. "You're going to torture me with them, aren't you?" she asked as Jacob handed one of the books to her.
(Aaaaand… Skip!)
The books were put away, and Kenzie looked away, blushing. Why had she decided to stay while Jacob and Hunter looked at the pictures together?
