With a sigh, Kenzie started towards her father's apartment, holding onto Hunter's hand like it was her lifeline. And it may as well have been.
They walked into the building and down the hallway that her father's door was in. Kenzie stopped when they finally reached it, staring at it.
Hunter looked at Kenzie, the way she was biting her lip in nervousness. He hoped she’d feel better after this, but he couldn’t be so sure.
“Knock.” He murmured softly, rubbing circles on the back of her hand.
Spoiler - click to show.Agents of SHIELD is amazing.
IT IS!
"He's not going to like that you're here," Kenzie whispered, turning so that she was facing Hunter.
Hunter scoffed.
“Doesn’t matter,” he replied sourly. “I came for you, not for him. I won’t leave just because he has a hard time accepting a McArthur.”
Kenzie just looked at Hunter for a moment before reaching up to quickly kiss his cheek. "Whatever he says, just know that I'm glad you're here, okay?"
She turned back to the door and took a step closer. With a quickly-beating heart and a deep breath, she finally knocked.
Hunter smiled and squeezed her hand.
“Of course,” he murmured softly just before Kenzie knocked. “I know.”
John opened the door, and, seeing his daughter holding onto her boyfriend's hand, narrowed his eyes slightly. He shook his head, as if clearing his thoughts, and smiled at Kenzie. When he noticed her look, though, his smile fell a bit.
"What's wrong, McKenzie?" he asked quietly.
Kenzie opened and closed her mouth a few times, trying to explain what Jacob had told her, but she couldn't get any words to come out. Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes, and her chin wobbled. John stepped out into the hall, worry creasing his brow.
"Sunshine, what's wrong?" he asked again.
With a cry of, "Mama's gone!" Kenzie wrapped her arms around her father, her tears quickly soaking his shirt. John glanced at Hunter, a look of, "Is this true?" on his face.
Hunter dug his nails into his hands at the sight of his beloved girlfriend crying. He hated seeing her tears, but he knew that she would be okay. She had to be.
When Kenzie’s father looked at him, Hunter nodded.
“Yesterday,” he said quietly, not wanting the words to reach Kenzie’s ears. “I hoped seeing you would make her feel better. Don’t make me regret the decision.”
John's jaw clenched tightly at Hunter's words, but his gaze softened as he looked down at his daughter. He held her for a moment, pressing a kiss to the top of her head.
"It'll be okay, Sunshine. Everything's going to be okay," he promised in a whisper. "I'm here for you. And… so is your boyfriend… We're both here if you need us." No matter how much it pained him to admit it, he could see the love between the two, and it was evident that Hunter would help her when she needed him to.
After a while, Kenzie took a shuddering breath as her tears finally stopped. She pulled away from her father's embrace and gave him a small, sad smile.
"Thanks, Daddy. For being here for me, and for not freaking out about Hunter again," she said softly.
John simply nodded in response. He turned his gaze to Hunter, giving him a hard look. "You'd better not hurt her," he warned.
Kenzie rolled her eyes. There it was. She stepped back and took Hunter's hand again, less for support this time and more to make sure he didn't do anything stupid.
Hunter rolled his eyes as Kenzie’s hand grabbed his. What, she thought he couldn’t control himself? He knew better than to start a fight now of all times, with Kenzie’s father of all people.
“You don’t have to worry about that,” Hunter said slowly, his chin up. “You just have to worry about what yourself.” He ended that with a smile.
Of course, that didn’t mean he wouldn’t try to get the old man worked up, either.
John glared at Hunter, but, with Kenzie there and grieving, he wouldn't do anything. Not at that moment, at least. He turned his gaze back to his daughter, his eyes softening as he looked at her.
"How–" He cleared his throat. "How did she die?" he asked quietly.
Kenzie bit her lip and looked down the hall for a moment, leaning slightly on Hunter. "I don't know exactly, but I was told that she was in a car accident," she explained quietly, purposefully leaving out the fact that it was Jacob who had told her. Her father didn't need to know that.
Hunter squeezed Kenzie’s hand, showing her his support. He would have hugged her, but with her father here and all, he figured he didn’t have to.
“Are you going to invite us in or are we going to just stand outside?” Hunter asked, not trying to rile up John but wanting to at the same time. He hoped it wouldn’t bother Kenzie, but she knew neither of them liked each other.
"I'm so sorry," John apologized, slowly shaking his head. His eyes were blank, void of emotion. He reached up to rub the back of his neck as he stepped aside to allow them to pass. "If you'd like to come in, please do. It's… a bit of a mess, but I wasn't expecting anyone."
As much as she wanted to visit further with her father, Kenzie knew they still had to go to Jacob. The sooner they finished with him, the sooner she could go home. She just wanted to sleep. And maybe shower.
"It's okay," she said softly, stepping forward a bit. "We, uh, we really should be going. Don't want to bother you any more than we have."
John looked up at his daughter, his eyes sad. He reached out to pull Kenzie into a warm embrace, stroking her hair as he whispered to her, "You're not bothering me. I'm just… trying to process this. If you want to stay, you're more than welcome to. But I won't stop you if you want to leave."
Kenzie nodded into his chest, tears threatening to flow again. She blinked them back as she hugged her dad, then pulled away slightly to give him a small smile.
"Thanks," she whispered again. "I really do think we have to go, but I'd love to come visit you another time."
"All right. I'll see you later, then," John said quietly. He tilted Kenzie's head down to press a light kiss to the top of it. "I love you, Sunshine. Remember that."
Kenzie wrapped her arms around him again. "I love you too." She pulled back and let him go, moving to Hunter's side once again.
Hunter watched the exchange quietly, lost in his own world. How long had it been since he’d last been embraced by an adult who loved him like this? All of this brought unwanted memories. His mother’s death, the sorrow, the screams, the hollow feeling and the total darkness. Hunter stopped at that trail of thought, taking a deep breath, forcing himself to get rid of those thoughts. He was there for Kenzie. Only for her.
When Kenzie moved back to Hunter’s side, he grabbed her hand again, giving her father a nod. For what, he didn’t know.
"'Bye, Daddy," Kenzie said sadly, then turned to Hunter to whisper, "Let's go."
Hunter smiled in encouragement at her before walking out of the building with her.
“Jacob’s next?” He asked.
Kenzie sighed. "Yeah, I guess." She faced Hunter, a pleading look in her eyes. "You're sure we have to see him?"
Hunter chewed on his lower him.
“Why don’t you want to see him, Kenz?” He asked. If the reason was appropriate, he wouldn’t force her.
"I just wanna go home," Kenzie mumbled, turning away. She knew that wasn't a valid reason to not see her stepfather, but she dreaded seeing him in distress. She dreaded seeing anyone in distress.
