“Sorry, Kenz, but you have to,” Hunter murmured, patting her on the back. “Jacob would feel abandoned. He needs you right now. He needs his daughter right now.”
“Sorry, Kenz, but you have to,” Hunter murmured, patting her on the back. “Jacob would feel abandoned. He needs you right now. He needs his daughter right now.”
"Fine," Kenzie breathed. "I guess."
(Bumping.)
Hunter wrapped an arm around Kenzie’s shoulders and pulled her closer.
“When it’s done, we’ll cuddle while watching T.V and eating pizza. How about that?”
Kenzie leaned into Hunter. "Sounds nice," she whispered.
Hunter grinned before kissing her on the head.
“It’s a date, then.” He said before leading her to his car.
"Do you know the way there, or do you need directions?" Kenzie asked once they were seated in the car.
Hunter snorted.
“I magically know the way to your stepfather’s house,” he said. “‘Course I need directions.”
Kenzie rolled her eyes. "Well, I used to live there, so I didn't know if you knew or not," she explained. "Here, I'll pull it up on my phone." She did so, and they were soon on their way.
“You never invited me to your house when we were going to school together.” Hunter felt the need to point it out as he drove to Jacob’s. When realization struck that he was meeting Kenzie’s stepfather, he felt a little nervous. He hoped Jacob had never even heard of his father, even if that was impossible. It would be a major problem if Jacob hated his guts, too, because of his stupid father.
“Wow, got there sooner than I expected.” Hunter murmured as he slowed the car down before parking.
"Sorry. I guess I was kinda… antisocial in school," Kenzie said, not moving from her seat. Her gaze avoided the house. "Um… Don't worry about Jacob. He's not like my dad."
(Bumping.)
“I was only joking, don’t worry.” Hunter said as he looked at Kenzie, a fond expression on his face. She didn’t exit the car, and neither did he. “You know what? Let’s just go home.”
"No, no. You're right. I should do this," Kenzie muttered, finally looking at the tan house.
(Bumping.)
“Are you sure?” Hunter asked skeptically. “You look just about ready to bolt out of here.”
Kenzie nodded slowly. "Yeah… I'll be fine," she whispered. "Everything'll be fine." She had to believe that. If she didn't, she'd crack, break, shatter.
(Bumping.)
Hunter sighed, reaching out to grab Kenzie’s hand.
“If you says so…”
"Let's go," Kenzie said, giving Hunter's hand a light squeeze to tell him she appreciated it. She opened the car door and stepped out, waiting for Hunter before she walked up to the house.
(Bumping.)
Hunter followed Kenzie to the house, contemplating whether he did the right thing or not. Forcing Kenzie to visit her stepdad, of course.
If he’s an ass to her, punch him in the face and leave, Hunter said to himself, nodding.
(I literally just got back online. After what was supposed to be an 8-hour drive. Which ended up taking about 8.5-9 hours…)
Once they reached the door, Kenzie knocked, then stepped back and waited. A few moments later, the door was opened by a tall man with short, dark brown hair and hazel eyes. Dark circles under his eyes showed his apparent lack of sleep, and they were dull, almost lifeless. When his gaze alighted on Kenzie, his eyes widened and lit up for a split second.
"McKenzie," he whispered, his voice hoarse. "My goodness, I thought you were your mother for a moment; you look so much like her, even with your hair a different color. We have to talk about what's happened…" He suddenly seemed to notice Hunter standing beside her, and he gave her a curious look, as if asking, Who's this?
Kenzie nodded, her grip on Hunter's hand tightening a bit. "Yeah, we do. This is Hunter McArthur, by the way. He's, uh, sort of my boyfriend…" her voice was soft as she trailed off awkwardly.
"Oh?" His eyebrows shot up, but he shook his head, pasting a smile onto his face. "Well, it's good to meet you, Hunter, though I wish it were on better terms. Anyway, please come in; it's getting colder and colder every day, now." He stepped aside and opened the door wider so that the couple could come inside.
Hunter raised his eyebrows, but didn’t say anything. He motioned for Kenzie to enter first before following after her. He felt sympathy for Jacob after having a good lock at him. Jacob looked like he hadn’t slept or eaten in a while.
“I wish we had met on better terms myself,” Hunter finally got himself to talk. “I apologize for not coming here sooner.”
