Liam found a dry patch of dirt, one that wouldn't start a huge fire and set the box down. He took the lighter from Kasey, crouching to set the box down before setting it ablaze.
Kasey stepped closer to Liam after he lit the box on fire. She leaned into his side as they watched it burn, then turned to bury her face in his shoulder.
Liam wrapped his arms around Kasey, resting his chin atop her head. They were going to be okay. They had to be.
As soon as the fire was out and the box and it’s contents were obliterated, Kasey glanced down at it one last time. As smoke rose from the small pile of ash, she shuddered again and looked away.
“Okay… We should talk about what we do next. Whatever it is, I would really like to bring the cats.”
Liam chuckled softly, "Bring the cats? What exactly, my dear, can we do that'll involve the fuzzballs back at home?"
“Well, we have to leave, right?” Kasey reminded him. “So we need to figure out where to go. And wherever it is, I want the cats to come.”
"What's the closest city with supers that you know?" Liam asked, "Maybe we could ask them for help with this whole thing.. if Matt hasn't got to them yet…"
“You think he’d go after supers in other cities, too?” Kasey chewed on the inside of her cheek as she thought about the supers in different cities. “We could try Northton. It’s been a while since I was there, but there should be someone I know who could help us.”
Liam nodded. He hadn’t actually been to Northton before, he just wished his first visit was under different circumstances, “Okay. We’ll try there. Let’s pack and tell your brother, then.”
“All right.” Kasey nodded, taking a step back from the burnt box. “Let’s go, then.”
Liam headed over to the car, opening the door for Kasey. Once she was in, he headed to the other side, climbing in himself and starting the car.
As soon as they were back, Kasey hurried into the apartment. She packed up her things, then tried to get the cats ready.
Liam did the same, packing his own items. While Kasey got the cats sorted, he did a quick sweep of the house, making sure everything important was packing and anything else was neatly packed away.
As soon as they were finished with everything, Kasey stood beside Liam. She sighed, shaking her head.
“I hate having to leave this when we just got here,” she whispered.
Liam wrapped his arm around her middle, pressing a kiss to the top of her head, "Me too, Kasey, me too. But we have to. Hopefully we'll be able to come back."
“Let’s hope,” Kasey whispered, nodding as she looked around one last time. “Okay. Let’s head out.”
Liam grabbed their bags, making sure he had everything but the cats as he had no room for those. He managed to open the door, holding it open for Kasey.
Kasey picked up the cats in their carriers. She stepped through the doorway with a sigh, then waited for Liam to lock the door so they could be on their way out.
Liam did so quickly, making sure it was properly secure. He sighed, leading Kasey down the hallway..
As soon as they got to the car, they packed their things into it, and Kasey made sure the cats were secure. She got into the passenger seat and pulled out her phone to call her brother. She let him know what was going on, and he told her that he would be on the lookout for Matt or anyone suspicious at the apartment.
As Kasey did so, Liam started the car, heading out of the park lot and onto the freeway. Hopefully if they just followed the road as much as they could they could make it to the next city with no trouble.
When Kasey finally hung up the phone after talking to her brother for about an hour, she sighed and rubbed at her face. “We should make a plan…”
“Well, first off out of all the supers in the city, who do you trust the most? And if so, would they let us stay with them?” Liam asked, glancing over for a moment.
“The one that I trust the most is Harper, but it would be too obvious to go to him. The other would be McKayla, an old friend of mine. She lives with her husband Danny, now, and I think they have an extra room. They might let us stay with them,” Kasey said after a moment of thought.
Liam nodded, "Okay. Best give her a call, then. See if she's willing to house us and the cats for a few days. If not then we might have to go to this Harper guy."
