Aaron frowns slightly, tilting his head. “Would you…like to talk about it?”
Aaron frowns slightly, tilting his head. “Would you…like to talk about it?”
Meg shook her head. “There is nothing to talk about. My father was a carpenter. He often went out to get his own wood to work with. And he was attacked by some wild animal.” she said shortly.
Aaron frowns deeply. “I’m so sorry for your loss…I couldn’t even imagine how that must feel…” true empathy filled his voice, a sad look in his eyes.
Meg closed her eyes and let out a deep sigh at his words. She’d heard them before, several times even, when her father had died and been buried. But the way Aaron had said those words felt different. “Thank you.”
He nods, “I’ve never had to experience that…but I can still try to emphasize and have sympathy for you…I couldn’t even imagine how my life would be if I didn’t have my parents…I count on them a little too much…”
“For your sake, I hope you never have to.” she said gently. “It's probably the worst thing I've been through. Like someone just came along, ripped out my heart, or maybe just part of it, and replaced it with a continuously frozen rock.” Meg tried to explain.
Aaron nods. He had a certain, unexplainable look in his eyes that just showed how much he cared. He sighs. “May I hug you?”
Meg blinked in surprise at the request but nodded slowly. “You may.” she replied simply despite her confusion at Aaron’s question.
He gently hugs her, holding her close. He stayed silent, closing his eyes.
Meg let out a slow breath and tried to relax into his hold, hesitantly wrapping her arms around him. It was strange, and a bit awkward. Her father had always been the one who initiated the hugs in the family, even as she had reached the age where her mother seemed to stop for no other reason than her daughter being too grown up.
After a moment, then lets go. “If you ever just…wanna talk about it to me…I’m happy to listen.” He says softly.
Meg nodded, sighing as he pulled away. “Thank you.” she replied sincerely as she brushed away a few stray tears.
He smiles, brushing his thumb over her eyes and wiping away her tears. “Of course…”
Her face warmed at his touch, not having expected such a gesture. “I still miss him.” the words slipped out softly. “It's been five years… and I still feel the pain of losing him as if it was just months ago.”
He nods, “I can tell…I’ve seen eyes filled with grief before…” he sighs, brushing her hair behind her ear.
Meg almost chuckled, feeling her blush darken at the touch. “I'm sorry. I didn't mean to bring up such a sad topic.” she apologized.
He shakes his head. “Don’t apologize…its nothing to be sorry for…” he smiles warmly.
“You are very kind.” she sighs, relieved that he was so genuine. “Thank you, again, for letting me talk about it.”
He nods, “of course…if that happened to me…I’d want to talk about it too…especially to someone who actually cares enough to listen…”
“Well… Now you have me.” Meg smiles softly, taking his hand in hers. “I would listen, if you need to talk to anyone.”
He smiles. “Thank you…I really do appreciate it.”
“It's no trouble.” Meg assured. “After all, you listened to me and cared. I wouldn't be a good friend if I didn't do the same for you.”
He smiles brightly, then continues walking down the path, looking way more relaxed.
Meg walked with him, feeling a little better than before. She looked back at Aaron and gave a brief smirk. “May I ask you something?”
He smiles and nods. “Fire away.”
