“I’m a mess Leo,” She muttered, petting the ball of fluff and pulling him closer to herself as her body sagged, telling her to sleep.
“I’m a mess Leo,” She muttered, petting the ball of fluff and pulling him closer to herself as her body sagged, telling her to sleep.
Leo whined again, and nuzzled her gently, closing his eyes with his wet nose buried in her neck. Jay took a deep breath.
Before she fell asleep completely, she pulled the corner of her blanket over herself and Leo again -pushing her pack away as well since it wasn’t as comfortable with cans of food inside it. She propped one of her arms behind her head and sighed, humming for a few minutes until she fell asleep and went silent.
Leo fell asleep, still cuddled up to her. After a few more minutes, Jay started running back.
Her mind didn’t bother with any nightmares or even dreams as she slept, all her energy wasted on remembering the painful past. With Leo right beside her, she kept a protective hand on his back almost like a kid would hold onto a stuffed animal.
Leo kept sleeping. Jay came back, and lay down quietly, glancing over at Delia. He sighed softly, and rolled himself up in the blanket, closing his eyes.
Delia slept peacefully, not waking up when Jay came back in. Leo was comforting and helped her immensely, especially when the sun rose again and she wanted to keep sleeping.
Jay was asleep after a while, and slept soundly until morning. He slept longer than he otherwise would have, curled up on his side. Leo was asleep too. He had woken up once in the night to use the bathroom, and had scampered outside to go before coming back in and snuggling up to Delia again.
Eventually though, she sighed and rolled onto her back, forcing herself to wake up. She opened one eye slowly and then the other, blinking a few times and stretching while she thought about what she needed to find when they went out searching the town.
Jay was quietly sleeping still, his hat lying on the floor by his head. His pale hair was tangled and messy on his head, and his face was hidden by his arm. Leo woke up, and stretched.
Delia sat up once she was finished stretching and looked to the fire, wondering if she should try to make something to eat or if she should wait for Jay to wake up. Glancing over at him, he seemed very asleep. She shrugged and looked to Leo, smiling when she saw the little ball of fluff was still by her.
Jay moved slightly, starting to wake up. Leo yipped softly, tail wagging. He scampered around the room, then back to Delia, tail wagging playfully. He sank his teeth into the hem of her pants, tugging playfully.
“Hey!” She couldn’t help but laugh softly, jokingly pushing the puppy onto his side and scratching his belly, “That’s not for you, those are mine you squeak. Now you’re gonna pay with some belly rubs.”
Leo squeaked, and wiggled under her hands, barking happily. Jay sat up, rubbing his face with a hand. "Nothing like a puppy for an alarm clock." He muttered sleepily, stretching.
Delia sucked in a guilty breath before going back to messing with the puppy and scratching his belly, “I might have had a part to do with the puppy alarm too, sorry.”
"It's okay." Jay replied, getting up. "I was starting to wake up anyway." Leo wriggled, barking happily, his tail thumping against the floor.
“Well, now that you’re awake, do you want to start searching the town right away? Or get another fire going and eat some more rice for breakfast before that?” She asked, moving and scratching behind Leo’s ears instead of his belly.
Jay shrugged. "Breakfast first." He replied, and moved to start up the fire again. His hair was sticking up all over his head, though he took no notice of it. Leo leaned against her hand contentedly.
She nodded, watching him start to get the fire ready with a hint of a smile from his messy hair. While he did that, she reluctantly stopped petting Leo and reached over, grabbing the pot for the rice again. She scooped what she guessed was a good amount of rice for the three of them into the pot before grabbing her canteens again and dumping the rest of her water into them. Another thing she would have to get more of, water.
Jay got the fire up to a good height and heat, and centered the pot over the flames so it would cook quickly. Leo padded over to Jay, nosing at him curiously. Jay smiled, and petted Leo slightly.
Delia rested back on her elbows and looked over at Jay, smiling slightly when she saw that Leo seemed to be less mad with Jay today. Her stomach grumbled and she ignored it like always, knowing she’d eat in a little while.
Leo nibbled at Jay's hand, tail wagging. Jay sighed softly. "Either you're teething, or you just want to bite me." He told the pup laughingly. Leo wagged his tail again.
She laughed lightly and shrugged, not saying anything and instead just watching the two of them together. With Jay and his messy pale hair and Leo with his golden fur, they seemed to belong together. Delia almost wished she had a working camera so she could capture the moment in a picture.
Jay grabbed the cloth scraps, and waved them in front of Leo's face. Leo barked, grabbing at them with his teeth and pulling. Jay pulled as well, in a game of tug of war. He pulled hard enough that Leo got pulled along. Leo growled playfully, tail wagging as he tugged.
She smiled and watched them goof around, shaking her head to try to make her hair less of a mess. The rice was cooling quickly and she leaned over, checking just to make sure.
