"Uhm…." Oscar's voice was a bit hoarse. He didn't take his eyes off the nurse for even a second, watching her every move. "I don't know….maybe what you had in the car when we were going here?"
(I'm off to bed now, seeya!)
(Goodnight!)
"Hey, look this way," Honor said, her voice gentle but commanding, "Focus on me and choosing what you want to eat besides cheese its. Do you want chinese food? There's that place in town, or I could get some good old bar food, cheese curds, thick burgers, the works. Otherwise there are a few other options." She was trying to distract him as much as possible as she talked, rubbing his shoulder and ignoring the people around them, "it's up to you."
(I gotta work today, seeya tomorrow probably. And wish me luck, I'll probably have to drive through a snowstorm on my way to-and-from the clinic ^^; )
"I–uh–" Oscar made a huge effort to bring his gaze over to Honor and hold it there. "I want something…..that'll make me feel full. Something….sweet, maybe?"
The nurse finished prepping the anesthetic needle and went to stand on Oscar's other side. "Ready?" she asked kindly. "It's going to feel like a sting, and then we'll be done with needles. Okay?"
Oscar paused, then slowly nodded, blinking rapidly.
(oof good luck! stay safe!!)
"I'll get something for desert," She said, nodding and continuing to rub his shoulder, "But you can only have it if you eat some real food too, ok?" Honor watched the nurse and the needle in her hand, deciding on getting some good bar food. Who knew how long they would have to stay here? If Oscar's wound was bad enough they would have to stay overnight at least so it could heal a little.
(thanks!! I actually teamed up with some coworkers and we got done early. It was still a very nasty drive though XDD My knees are definitely NOT weak from the amount of times we fishtailed ehehe)
The nurse, seeing that Oscar was as prepared as he would get, deftly found a spot on his head and administered the anesthetic before he realized what was happening. "There! We're done with that. In a few minutes, it'll be all numb, and then we can get started on–"
The pulse of energy came without warning, filling the room with white light and a sound like a subwoofer for exactly 0.5 seconds. Both the nurse and the doctor jumped back like startled cats, bumping into the crash cart. Oscar bared frighteningly jagged teeth, gripping the sides of the table with white knuckles. He was bleeding so much now that it was starting to drip onto the floor.
Doctor Gustav stared at Oscar, rooted to the spot. "What. Was. That."
(XD I'll have to deal with that driving tomorrow when I head back up hunting again hopefully it isn't terribly snowy :) )
Even Honor flinched and she looked at Honor with a worried face as she whispered, "Calm down, please Oscar, you'll get caught, everything will be alright." She gripped his shoulder tighter and looked over at the doctor and nurse, putting on her best confused and worried face; which wasn't that hard; before saying shakily, "I don't know what that was either…Maybe it's the building's power? That was scary.."
(ah yeah, good luck with that. Be safe and careful!!)
The nurse glanced at Doctor Gustav nervously, setting down the needle on the counter. "Uh….maybe, yeah….want me to go check the generator, Doctor?"
The old man didn't look at her. His expression had completely shifted from 'firm but kind' to something much closer to fear or suspicion. "Ma'am," he said slowly, "is that really your cousin?"
(Oof I gtg to bed now)
"Yes he's my cousin," She replied in an indignant voice, trying to convince him with her lie, "My mom and his dad are siblings." It was true that her mother had a brother, but he didn't have any children.
Doctor Gustav eyed her sharply. "Then maybe you can explain a few things to me. Why are his teeth so sharp? Why is his head split like a watermelon and bleeding like a headless corpse without any symptoms of shock, critical blood loss, skull damage, or a concussion? Why is he looking at me like that?"
Oscar hissed. His eyes were small pools of pitch black and his face was looking less human by the minute. His knuckles were starting to bleed too, as if some internal pressure was building against his skin.
"Shit," She whispered, glancing at Oscar with wide eyes, "Um, I've never seen him do this, I know his teeth are sharp though. Everything else I've never seen him do." She looked back at the doctor and then at Oscar, whispering as quickly and sharply as she can, "Hey, calm down, the doctor is getting suspicious, I don't want you to be taken away, please calm down and just go along like a human would?"
"I'm not a human," Oscar snarled, barely any louder than Honor had been. "I don't like what they're doing to me. If they try to take me away, then I will break them into pieces. I want to go home with you, now." Despite the gutteral aspect of his voice and the terrifying twistedness of his expression, his tone was demanding and thick with emotion, like a child on the brink of a meltdown. It almost seemed as if his aggressive display was to cover up the fact that he was actually very, very scared.
"Oscar, I can't take you home until they fix that gash," She replied, tough but with a undertone of understanding, "Just please, hold it together until the doctor fixes you up. I would take you home if i knew how to do medical stitches and felt comfortable trying to fix you up, but I don't. So please. I don't care if you like it, it needs to be done unless you want to be like the other people in here."
That got his attention. He quieted, his eyes slightly returning to normal. "I….I don't want to be like them." Reluctantly, he glanced back over at the medical staff now essentially hiding behind the crash cart. "But they don't want me here. I don't think they're going to help me now."
"Like hell we're going to help you two," Doctor Gustav said stiffly. "He's one of them, isn't he? You brought a monster into this hospital to be treated."
(lol I kinda want her to just be like fuck it and force the doctors to help and then have her try to essentially disappear off the map to help him)
"He's not a monster, and yes he's here to be treated. That's what you guys do here, is take care of people. So do you job and help him," She snapped, "The faster you help us the faster we'll leave and never come back." Honor watched the staff closely, one hand still on his shoulder as she waited with an expectant look.
(lol it's up to you fam, I have no particular plan at this point and I kinda like that idea XD)
The doctor looked like he was going to tell her off, but at that point the nurse finally seemed to find her voice again and spoke first. "Well um–is it….is he actually okay with getting treated now? He didn't seem very receptive to the anesthetic."
"Just don't put anything else weird in my head," Oscar said gruffly. "What was it even for?"
"For….for the pain."
"Oh, well I didn't even need it then. I don't feel anything. Just fix it and we'll leave, and I won't break you into pieces."
Doctor Gustav still looked very reluctant. "Even if we do treat your friend, then what will you do?" he asked Honor in a low voice. "Take him to Goldenrod before he gets somebody killed, I hope?"
(I gotta head to bed, seeya ^^)
(Happy Thanksgiving!!)
"What we do after we leave here is none of your concern," She replied, scowling at the doctor, "Your concern is helping him before he dies." Honor motioned for him to stand up and start working, "So, let's get started."
(Thanks! You too!! ^^)
The doctor narrowed his eyes, but the nurse touched his shoulder and whispered to him quickly. He paused a minute longer, then gave a jerky nod. "Fine. Fine. But if he does….whatever that flare was again, I'm calling the cops."
"Deal," She said immediately, her focus now on trying to keep Oscar from doing that again, "But be quick, don't dawdle." Honor turned to Oscar and gave him a small smile, "Hear that? They're going to help you, and as long as you don't do that again, we'll be out here quickly. You just have to stay calm and tell me if you need help calming down."
Oscar leaned back slowly, loosening his grip on the edges of the table. "All right."
Once given the go-ahead, the two medics wasted no time in doing their job. Doctor Gustav stitched Oscar's head wound shut while the nurse stood by, ready to offer and extra hand if need be. Both were tense and obviously reluctant to be anywhere near their patient, but maintained a stiff, uncomplaining silence throughout the procedure.
Oscar, for his part, behaved remarkably well. He only flinched away slightly when the first stitches were made, then got used to it and held still after that. At a certain point, he reached out for Honor's hand, not looking at her but obviously wanting to make sure she was still close by.
Honor let him grab her hand when he reached for it, glancing at him before looking back to watch the doctor. She watched the three of them carefully and studied what they were doing to Oscar's head, squeezing his hand gently in thanks for his cooperation.
In the end, it took sixteen stitches to close the wound, followed by a layer of padding and bandage tape. The nurse washed and wrapped up Oscar's hands as well, then stepped back and began tidying the crash cart. Doctor Gustav went to wash his hands, still not saying anything.
"You'll need to change the bandages regularly and check for infection," the nurse ventured after a moment. "And keep the stitches dry for 48 hours. Once it's completely healed….you'll probably need to find a medical professional to remove the stitches for you." She glanced uncertainly at the doctor, but he remained silent. "Um, if the wound starts bleeding heavily, oozing, swelling, or if Oscar starts feeling feverish, get him to a doctor. Give him plenty of rest, clean water, and healthy food–or whatever his kind eats, I guess. That's….that's all I've got."
When the nurse started talking, Honor immediately started paying attention, nodding and trying her best to remember all the directions. "How long will it take to heal completely?" She asked, still holding onto Oscar's hand and getting ready to have him stand up and walk out of the hospital.
(sry its short and it took so long for me to respond, i'm exhausted since I spent the past few days with my best friend (she moved away and I haven't seen her in forever))
(no worries ^^ I hope you had a good time with your friend!)
"With our usual patients, we tell them to give it four to six weeks at least," the nurse replied, backing away to give them space. "With him….I'm not so sure. I'm actually surprised he's so badly hurt–I thought his kind didn't sustain physical injuries."
Oscar perked up, mid-way off the table. "You know more about me? What am I? Can you tell me anything else–"
"No." Doctor Gustav had finally finished cleaning up and gone to stand next to the nurse. His expression was grim and unfriendly. "We can't help you anymore. We're experts on humans, not whatever you are. It's time for both of you to leave."
