Her movement snapped him out of his thoughts and he shot her a soft smile. "Hey." He was horrible with names, always had been. What was it again? Angie? Anna? Abby? No, none of those were right. It started with an A, what was it? The cogs in his head turned for a few seconds before if clicked. Angel! That was her name!
The pale girl tried to think of something more to say but came up with nothing. She simply stared at the taller boy for a while, thinking, before she realized she was probably being creepy.
"Sorry." she mumbled, quickly looking anywhere but at him.
A slight chuckle escaped him. "Don't worry about it." Come on Jay, say something! Don't let the awkward silence take over!
"Have you ever been here before?" Angel asked still not looking at him. "I've never been camping before. Is it really as fun as everyone says it's gonna be?" Her voice was laced with uncertainty, and she shuffled in her seat.
"Have I ever been here specifically? No. Have I been camping before? Yes. Camping itself is pretty fun, I think you'd enjoy it. But when you're surrounded by this bunch of annoying bastards, probably not so much." He sighed softly before glancing over at her. "Looks like it's you and me against the world, huh?"
"Guess so." she replied as the bus pulled into the campsite. "It's fucking huge! How am I NOT supposed to get lost?" she squeaked sinking into the seat.
(Are we doing one cabin for the girls and one for the boys? Or just mix n match?)
(I've gotta go to bed now ttyl)
(I say one for boys, one for girls)
"Well, it's not like you're going to be left by yourself. This is a class trip so I doubt you'll even be allowed to go off on your own, let alone get left behind." He nudged her playfully. "Don't worry, we won't let you get eaten by bears."
(Ok)
"You better not!" she said as they got off the bus. She had grabbed the back of his shirt so as not to lose him in the crowd. There were roughly 40 kids, plus two leaders. The girls' cabin was next to the gift shop and dining hall, while the boys' was next to the recreational center and lake. They weren't too far apart, but you would have to yell to be able to hear each other from that distance.
"I don't understand why people always have to divide the group 'boys vs. girls.'" Angel complained kicking a rock. She never really liked that rule. She got along with guys way better than she did with girls. She might as well be one.
"Mostly so that no one sees anyone from the opposite gender naked. Because that would be just tragic." He chuckled. "That and it makes it easier to keep track of everyone. Gives the leaders an advantage in knowing if someone got away to go make out behind a bush somewhere."
"Oh, please. Who in their right mind would make out behind a bush? I'd do it under the dock. No one would ever think to look there." As soon as she realized what she said, her face turned fifty shades of red. "Not that I WOULD do it! I'm just saying, if they're gonna do it they should at least pick a good place."
He couldn't help bursting out laughing. "Is that so? I'll keep that in mind." He teased with a grin. She was fun. He was really starting to like her.
"Well, where would you make out?" Angel asked. What did he mean he'd 'keep that in mind'? No. Stop. You can't catch feelings on the first day. That's irrational and illegal!
Angel was a strange girl.
"Where would I? Hmm, good question." He chewed on his lip, thinking for a minute. "I'd go with up in a tree somewhere. Simple but it certainly gets the job done. Plus, I'd rather be uncomfortable in a tree than end up soaking wet under a dock."
"Yeah that makes more sense. But how do you plan to not fall?" she asked, crossing her arms. "I mean, you'd have to be pretty high up if you didn't want to be seen."
"Easy! Stay against the trunk and have whoever you're making out with in your lap. That way you can stay in complete control of the situation so no one falls."
She felt her heart skip a beat as her cheeks heated up again. "That's pretty smart." After announcing the rules, the leaders lead the campers to the cafeteria. Angel sat beside Jay at a two chaired table by a window, in a corner of the room.
"You like staying by windows, don't you? What, trying to keep everyone from thinking you're a vampire by staying in the light?" He teased with a chuckle as he took the other seat, brushing his hair out of his eyes.
"Shut up!" she laughs. "It's actually because Mom said sunlight helps with anxiety." Why did I just tell that to a stranger. Well, he's not a stranger. We know him now.
"Really now? Huh, that's a new one. Maybe that's why I like summer so much." He shrugged with a smile. She seems to quiet but she's talking a lot now. Wonder why she decided to talk to me of all people.
"Yep." She picked up her pizza, dipped it in her milk and took a big bite out of it. "Have you ever tried pizza and milk? It's delicious!"
"Can't say I have! Although I'm sure Mama Jill would be willing to give it a shot." He chuckled to himself. Mama Jill was Jay's current guardian, he had been passed around like a Christmas sweater nobody wanted in foster care since he was 7.
"So, what's first on your schedule? After claiming your bunk that is." she asked.
(Should the class do things together? Or the boys do one thing while girls do another?)
(I'd say they do things together in different groups of like 5 kids per group)
"I've got the scenic hike through the woods. I'm actually kind of excited about it. Let's just hope the group I get stuck with isn't too annoying or else I will drown them all out with Green Day."
(Welp, I'm going with ya cause I don't know how else to move the story.)
"Me too! That's awesome!" What the heck is Green Day?
(You wanna timeskip to after they pick their bunks and meet up for the hike?)
