Autumn giggled slightly as she watched him leave. He was too cute sometimes.
Shaking her head in amusement, she turned back to Jillian, still smiling from Alex. “So what grade are you in, Jilly?”

Shaking her head in amusement, she turned back to Jillian, still smiling from Alex. “So what grade are you in, Jilly?”
Jilly watched over her cup, sipping at the sweet brown liquid in the cup. She looked up and spoke softly, “I am in fourth grade.”
“How do you like it? Are your teachers nice?” Autumn asked, moving to lean against the sink.
Jilly nodded. “They are very nice. I like them.” She liked school a lot. But her parents warned her, saying that it would get harder.
“That’s good,” Autumn said, nodding slowly. “Have you learned anything interesting?”
Jilly swallowed her mouthful and nodded. “I learned multiplication.”
“A very useful thing to know!” Autumn declared with a grin. “So, have you had any pets at home?”
Jilly shook her head. “Moma was allergic. I’ve always wanted a little rodent. Rodents are nice.”
“Oh? Like what kind of rodent?” Autumn asked, blinking a couple of times. If it was something like a rabbit or a chinchilla, she would definitely agree. Not really mice or rats, though…
Jilly moved on the toilet and picked up her phone. She went to a web browser and opened a new tab.
“It’s… one of these!” She held up the phone to show a cute little guinea pig for sale.
Autumn smiled at the little animal. “Cute. I’m sure you’d be great with one.”
Jilly mustured up a smile. “Moma said they need a pal, cus they’ll get lonely.”
“Then I’m sure you’d be great with two,” Autumn corrected herself with a chuckle.
Jilly put her hands up to her face, looking at Autumn curiously. “Will I be staying here?”
“Um… Well, I think that would be up to Alex because this is his house… But I would think he would be okay with that,” Autumn said softly, smiling at her.
Alex popped back into the bathroom, handing Autumn a couple cookies and the ice pack.
“What are y’all talking about?”
Autumn thanked him for the cookies and handed Jillian the ice pack. “Jillian — that’s her name,” she said, nodding toward the girl. “—was just asking if she could stay with us. I said we’d have to talk to you about it.”
Alex nodded and smiled at the girl. “Hi Jillian. You’re very welcome to stay with us. My name is Alex. It’s very nice to meet you.” He stuck out a hand slowly.
Jilly looked up at Autumn, then at Alex, and took his hand.
(I couldn’t find the page I was looking for. Oh my word. I mean, I did, but it took forever…
Also, random thought: I wonder what Kayla and J are doing…)
Autumn grinned at them before she took a bite of one of her cookies. She hummed happily, both from the cookie and the positive interaction between Jillian and Alex.

(Lol. What were you looking for?
Maybe we could check up on them next?)
Alex gave a soft laugh and shook Jilly’s hand. She didn’t smile or giggle, but she seemed entranced by how nice these new adults were.
(I just forgot J’s name… And Kayla’s…)
“So, Jilly… Would you maybe like to take a bath? Or a shower? You could get some of the dirt off of yourself and out of your hair,” Autumn suggested softly, finishing one of her cookies. “And then I could bring you shopping for some new clothes?”
(Lmao. J’s name is Jax, but J is just a nickname.)
Jilly brought her hands together on the cup. She could hardly shower by herself. She always needed help.
“B-but… I’ll need help.”
