“So… Do you want to come see her when I bring her a water?” Autumn asked.
“So… Do you want to come see her when I bring her a water?” Autumn asked.
Alex glanced up and nodded. “Sure. I’ll be there to see her. Is she bad?”
Autumn nodded slowly. “Yeah… She’s pretty beaten up…”
Alex sighed and sat up slowly, stretching out. “Okay. I’ll come with you.” He swung his legs over the bed and stood.
“Okay. Just… go slowly. And speak softly, okay? She seems very timid right now,” Autumn said as she made her way to the kitchen to get a glass of water.
Alex followed her quietly and set his hands on her shoulders when she turned.
“I will be as quiet as a mouse.”
After getting the water, Autumn made her way to the bathroom, where she knocked on the door before entering. She gave the girl a small smile as she handed her the water.
“Hey. I brought someone else to see you,” she said softly, moving to the side to let Alex by.
The girl looked up from her warm towel and shakily grabbed the cup, drinking it down quickly. She looked up at Autumn with wide eyes then over at Alex.
Alex was near the door, gazing at her with a warm smile. She shuffled away from Alex, though he wasn’t close.
“Hey, it’s okay. He won’t hurt you,” Autumn said softly, slowly walking closer to her. “He wants to help you, too.”
The girl looked back up at Autumn, her eyes huge and scared.
Alex didn’t move forward yet. “I won’t hurt you. She’s right.”
Autumn stopped about a foot away from the girl. “How does your throat feel? Do you think you could try to talk?”
The girl steadily relaxed back into the towel, still round-eyed in fear. Her throat hurt a lot. She shook her head.
Autumn hummed thoughtfully, trying to think of something that could help. “Maybe honey in your water would help with that. Do you mind drinking some warm water? Or tea?”
The girl blinked. Her father never let her have tea. She smelled it before. It smelled interesting. She nodded slowly, her curiosity still nibbling at her.
“Alex, do you have any tea?” Autumn asked, turning to him.
Alex glanced at her. “I do. Want me to go brew some?”
“Would you, please? And then put some honey in it, too?” Autumn asked with a smile.
Alex smiled back warmly and nodded. “Of course, dear.” He turned and walked away.
After Alex left, Autumn turned back to face the girl, giving her the soft smile she had been giving her since she saw her.
"How old are you, hun?" she asked softly.
The girl had shuffled back into herself when Alex left. She poked her hands out of the towel and stretched them out.
“You’re ten? Wow, double digits, huh?” Autumn enthused with a grin.
The girl curled her arms back up into her towel and wiggled into the warmth of it again. She nodded and set her chin down on the toilet to look up at the woman.
“That’s pretty exciting, isn’t it? You know, my golden birthday was when I was ten. Do you know how old you’ll be on your golden birthday?” Autumn asked gently.
The little girl blinked a couple times. She wasn’t sure what the lady was talking about. She looked up again and tried to ask “What?” But her voice only came out hoarse and scratchy.
“Do you know what a golden birthday is?” Autumn asked, her eyebrows furrowing slightly. She thought everyone did, but maybe she was wrong…
