Julian pouted and hung his head. "Fine…" He groaned loudly, slumping a sitting down on the side of the road.
Pierre's feet can to a scuffed stop. Sweet Julian, he thought, always forty steps ahead of himself, but in good nature at least. "Alright. Where did you want to go? Explore the pond? Climb trees?"
He perked up, pushing himself off the ground. "The pond! I want to go swimming!" He smiled brushing himself off.
"Then we'll go!" Pierre gestured, "Lead the way, Jules,"
He skipped off glancing over his shoulder to make sure Pierre was following. "You're so slow." He whined grabbing his hand and lightly trying to pull him along.
"Hah—" he tripped a little, catching himself and tipping Carmine off his shoulder. Pierre held onto his bag strap. "I am. I'll hurry up,"
He smiled and still held his brother's hand. "You better!" Julian chirped seeing the pond. "Because I see the pond!"
Pierre jogged to keep up with his spritely sibling. "I dare you to jump in!"
"I'll do it- what do I get in return?" He asked looking at him with large eyes.
Pierre dropped his bag to the ground, to which his pet made a bed of. "…Um.. three Francs." He answered.
( I don't know much about old French currency so I'll just say thays equal to five dollars )
(XDD I don't either)
"Alright deal!" He chirped before pulling his over shirt off. He jumped in and yelped. "It's cold!"
Pierre planted his hands on his hips, smiling widely. "How cold?"
"Cold, cold!" He yelled trying to get out of the water.
"Hahaha!!!" His big brother cried. "Oh my God Julian. Well you deserve your Francs!"
"I would come get them- but my foot is stuck!" He cried panicked. He was flailing and trying so hard to get out.
He sighed humoredly. "Calm down, calm down! You can still breathe!" Pierre pulled off his boots and rolled up his breeches to wade in. His lips pulled tight; it was cold, for being the middle of summer.
"Pierre help!" He cried trying to get unstuck. He was being a tad over dramatic, but he was scared. "Please help!"
"Stop, stop!" He choked back a laugh— oh, ridiculous. Pierre gripped his brother by the flanks to stop his needless flailing. "There, I'll hold you, try to wiggle it free. And you aren't drowning," he chided.
"I might as well be!" He said trying to wiggle his foot free. "I don't even know what it's stuck on, but it hurts." He pouted furrowing his brow.
Pierre shifted him to one arm, bending to use a foot and try freeing Julian's. "Oh good Lord. Jesus. You're the most pitiful kid I know," he mumbled facetiously.
Julian looked to the the water away from his brother. "That's what everyone says…" He muttered kind of giving up trying to free his foot.
Pierre finally overturned the rock, helping pull Julian free. He let out a soft sigh. "Hey…" He cajoled, "I don't mean it like they do."
"It doesn't matter. You said it." He mumbled getting to the edge and sitting on the shore.
Pierre frowned and looked towards the sky again. It had been a hot, confusing day. The sky was red now in its dying hours and to Pierre, the omen was correct.
He did his best to bring his brothers focus from this random sadness. "Do you want to go anywhere else?"
"I don't care, what about you?" He asked pulling his legs close to his chest. He was cold, but didn't want to get his shirt wet, so he hugged himself.
