Bryce glanced down at Joy as he held the baby, and he smiled softly when he noticed she’d falen asleep. He carefully maneuvered himself to lay beside her, making sure to keep Ambrose ticked safely in his arms.
Joy woke up to see Bryce, who was sitting down and playing with the baby, a soft smile on his face, his voice gentle and playful.
She sat up slowly, wincing.
“Goo—good morning,” she winced, taking harsh breaths.
Beyce glanced up from Ambrose, whose mouth was forming an ‘o’ as his baby blue eyes looked up at his father.
“Hey, beautiful… How’d you sleep?” he asked softly.
“Good,” Joy murmured. “How are you and Ambrose? What did the doctor say? When can we go home? He needs to be fed, right?”
Bryce laughed softly at his love’s questioning. “Our son and I are fine. The doctor said you can go home later today. And, yes, I think he does need to be fed.”
Joy reached her sore arms out, her eyes glossy.
“Give me,” she insisted.
“All right, all right,” Bryce chuckled, standing and handing their son over to her. “There’s our baby Ambrose…”
Joy smiled brightly, giving him a soft kiss before she let him feed.
She lightly traced his cheek, warmth flowing through her.
“Look, he has my freckles,” she murmured. “That’s so cute.”
Bryce watched, his eyes soft as he looked down at his two favorite people in the world. “He does, huh? It is really cute… I think he has your nose, too.”
Joy looked up at him in amusement.
“My nose?” She laughed, shaking her head. “I thought it was a bit like yours, but I guess I don’t know my own nose very well.”
“Hm… I think he looks like you, love. He’s perfect,” Bryce murmured for the umpteenth time as he smiled down at his son.
Joy smiled.
“I think he looks like you,” she said. “Look, he’s got your skin color, too, and those cute little eyes… don’t you, my baby? Don’t you look a lot like daddy?”
Bryce chuckled and swept a piece of hair behind her ear before kissing the side of her head. “How about we settle for the in between, hm? He looks like a mix of us both.”
“Good idea,” Joy grinned, reaching down to kiss their baby. “Did you tell your parents?”
“That he was born? Yeah, I did this morning. I think they might come to visit later if that’s okay. Maybe after you get home?” Beyce suggested, running his hand through her hair.
Joy leaned into his touch, shifting her legs slightly before regretting it.
“That’s good,” she murmured. “Bryce… you haven’t slept yet, have you?”
Bryce smiled down at her and kissed her nose. “I slept, love. Right beside you. I just woke up before you did. Do you know what time it is?”
Joy shook her head.
“No… what time is it?” She questioned, reaching out to pat his cheek.
“It’s about eleven in the morning… The next day,” Bryce chuckled softly. “You slept almost twenty-four hours. And you definitely deserved it.”
Joy looked at him with wide eyes.
“You didn’t go to work today?” She asked, panicking. “Bryce, your boss might not appreciate it! You could have woken me up and left.”
Bryce laughed softly and leaned down to kiss her forehead. “Babe, it’s Saturday. I don’t work weekends, remember? I got yesterday off so I could be here with you, and Matt totally understood.”
Joy chewed on her lower lip, shaking her head at her stupidity.
“Sorry, I forgot what day it’s supposed to be,” she said softly, looking down at Bryce in her arms, softly poking his squishy cheek. “I love him. We’re finally parents, huh, Bryce?”
“That’s okay, love. You just went through almost twenty-four hours of labor and the birthing of a child. I think you of all people have reason to forget the day,” Bryce assured her gently. “Yeah… I still can’t believe it. He’s really ours… really mine…”
Bryce’s choice of words caused her to wince, but Joy pretended she wasn’t hurt. Did he still not believe Ambrose was his son? Was he still hesitant in believing?
“Yeah…” she murmured, gently caressing Ambrose’s head. “I can’t believe he’s finally in my arms. I would have thought it was a dream had I not gone through all that pain.”
Bryce smiled down at her softly and leaned over to kiss her head. “You are so amazing, Joy… I can’t believe you actually did it. You actually gave birth to our son…”
