Eve blinked quickly and nodded. "Alright, if you're sure… but I don't want any consequences to fall on you."
Eve blinked quickly and nodded. "Alright, if you're sure… but I don't want any consequences to fall on you."
Rowan shrugged. "I'll be fine. I mean, if they ask about it, I'll just tell them we got cats. It's not like we're doing anything illegal. Ready to get going?" He asked, picking up the cat tree again to carry it out.
Eve nodded eagerly. "Yep! Let me go pull the car up!" She hurried out, holding Bean in one hand and Nollie in the other.
"Alright…" Rowan thanked the cashier and carried the cat tree out so he could put it in Eve's car when she pulled it around.
Eve was outside on the curb in a few minutes. She beeped her horn playfully to catch Rowan's attention.
Rowan waved and carefully got the cat tree and other things into the car before he got into the passenger side himself.
Eve giggled as he got in. Nollie and Bean were play fighting on her lap.
Rowan picked up Nollie once he was in the car and held her close with a soft smile. "It'll take us a bit to get all this stuff set up."
"Yes, that's very true," Eve murmured, handing him Bean as well so she could drive off.
Rowan held both kittens contentedly, humming softly to himself. "Shouldn't take terribly long, though. We didn't get too much."
"Do you know how to set up the cat tree?" Eve asked, turning down their street. "Shit," she breathed, turning quickly down another side street. "It's Preston."
"Uhh… there's instructions in the box, so I should be able to figure it out." Rowan shrugged. He tensed up at Preston's name, clearly nervous as well. "Just avoid him. Maybe he didn't notice us…"
Eve pulled the car to the side of the alley and looked over at Rowan worriedly. "What do I do? We can't just keep driving around."
"Well… I-I dunno. Maybe we just… go back, hope for the best?" Rowan offered meekly. "We need to get the stuff set up for Nollie and Bean… we'd be fine in here for a while, but we can't keep them in the car for hours with no food, water, or litter."
"I know," Eve muttered. "Dammit, why does he have to be such a jackass?" She pressed her lips together, eyeing the kittens and Rowan fondly before she shook her head. "I suppose there's no other option other than circling back."
"Yeah… maybe he's gone already. Who knows?" Rowan sighed and looked around with the kittens still in his lap. "Maybe he won't bother us? We're not doing anything he should care about."
Eve scoffed. "Please. He doesn't have to care to harass me. Isn't that, like, the entire point of harassing?" She pulled the car around again, and it appeared that Preston was gone. She breathed a sigh of relief and parallel parked along the curb. "There we are."
"Yeah, I guess so… just hoping that he won't bother us." Rowan sighed softly, and he seemed relieved as well to see that Preston wasn't there. "I'll put them in their box for now so it's easier to get everything upstairs."
Eve nodded with a smile. She got out of her car, and once the door was shut, she heard the door of another car open. She looked at the car parked in front of her, and she paled.
Out stepped Christopher with a grin on his face. "Eve!"
She backed away quickly, her heart racing. "Stay away from me, Christopher!" she demanded.
Rowan was getting the kittens situated in their box when he heard a guy calling Eve's name, and Eve retaliating. He immediately straightened and came over to the driver side of the car next to Eve. "What's the problem? Who the hell are you?"
Eve gripped Rowan's arm tightly, and he could feel her trembling. "My ex," she whispered to him.
Christopher arched his eyebrows and ignored Rowan's question. "Is this the new boyfriend? Not who I expected."
"What the hell are you doing here?" Eve demanded, trying to keep her voice calm.
Rowan, feeling Eve's tight grip on him, took a step forward to be partially in front of her. She was clearly scared of this guy, so he wouldn't let him near her. "It doesn't matter who I am. Eve doesn't want you here, so piss off." He glared at Christopher, feeling more confident whilst defending someone besides himself.
Christopher cocked an eyebrow, looking an odd sort of impressed. "You've got guts," he admitted, taking a few steps closer to them. "Trying to keep my girlfriend away from me."
"I'm not your girlfriend anymore, Chris," Eve snapped. "We're done! We've been done. Leave me alone, please!"
"You guys aren't dating anymore, man! Just move on and get lost!" Rowan insisted, moving to protect Eve more. He really didn't want this to escalate into an actual physical fight. After all, his wrist was still injured from fighting with Preston, and he wasn't much of a fighter to begin with.
