"So. Is a newspaper alright? And what sort of book?" Dmitri asked, pulling out a notepad to write it down on.
"So. Is a newspaper alright? And what sort of book?" Dmitri asked, pulling out a notepad to write it down on.
(sorry it took so long!)
“Yes and I don’t care as long as it has action,” Elissa responded. “For a gang leader, you’re surprisingly accommodating.”
(it's fine!)
Dmitri shrugged. "I have to be willing to make certain smaller compromises in order to get my way on larger issues."
"And what's the larger issue here?" Elissa asked, crossing her arms in front of her chest.
"That…I did not mean in this moment." Dmitri repleid. "There was no reason for me not to accomodate your smaller requests."
Elissa sighed, twirling a strand of hair around her finger absently. “Oh. Thanks, then,” she said awkwardly, unsure exactly how to react to this strange situation she had found herself in. Was it weird that she felt sort of grateful? She shouldn’t, but it was getting harder to feel the anger that was burning earlier.
Dmitri let out a faint breath, running a hand through his hair. "Right. I'll go get these for you, then." He said, heading out the door.
Elissa watched him go. She always seemed to have something witty to say, but clearly right now was not her time. Maybe it only applied when her life wasn’t in disarray. She sighed.
Dmitri closed and locked the door behind himself, heading over to gather up what she had requested.
Elissa’s mind wandered as she waited, daydreams going from one to the next.
Dmitri eventually came back with the items she had requested, opening the door and stepping inside.
Elissa looked up at him, now sitting on the floor. "Hello again," she said.
"Hello." he greeted, setting the items on the floor near her.
“Thanks,” Elissa said simply. “So what are you going to do now?”
"You're welcome." he brushed his hands off on hs pants. "I'm not sure about that."
“Surely you have a lot to do, as infamous as you are,” Elissa remarked offhandedly. “People to kill, places to rob, etcetera.”
His mouth twisted. "I try not to kill too many people, actually. Not without a reason."
“What reason would you have to kill someone anyway?” Elissa asked, knowing that she was circling back to the same thing but not caring. She hadn’t even had time to grieve before being locked away in this cell, no matter how decent Dmitri was being now.
"It varies. Turf wars, gang wars, prisoners, unpaid ransoms, and loose ends." Dmitri listed off, shrugging his shoulders.
“You really take people for ransom?” Elissa asked, fully aware that her naïveté was showing. For someone so dedicated to teaching her self defense, Elissa’s grandmother never really told her why she would need to know it.
"Not often, but sometimes. When we're short on cash." He replied. "Counterfeit doesn't pass anymore, and I don't want to get mixed up with that."
Elissa frowned. “So when you don’t have money, you just take people for ransom? So you could just kill an innocent person because you’re short on cash?”
Dmitri shrugged. "Sometimes." He replied. "Though it usually isn't an innocent person, by the way."
“So you kidnap other criminals then? Or corrupt businessmen? Or what?” she asked, trying to think back to the last time a ransom made the headlines.
"Both." he replied with a shrug. "Mostly if they have ties to either our enemies, or have enough money to pay such a ransom. There's no reason to kidnap a poorer person whose family will not be able to pay."
