Gabe pushed the door to the building open, letting Alex through first.
Gabe pushed the door to the building open, letting Alex through first.
Alex headed inside, glancing back at Gabe for reassurance.
Gabe offered a smile, stepping in behind Alex.
He returned the smile hesitantly, heading towards the counter.
The government agent there looked up.
"Can I help you sir?"
"I uhm…yeah, I…" he looked at Gabe again, uncertain.
"We're both here looking for lanf," Gabe clarified. The worker looked between the two of them, eyeing them up.
"He's my, uhm, cousin." Alex lied. "We're going to work the land together and send for the rest of the family eventually."
Gabe nodded in turn.
"Aunt told me to watch out for him," Gabe said, chuckling softly. He slipped so easily into the lie. That seemed to convince the government worker.
"I'll need your names, then."
"Alexander Swanson." Alex said, not really seeing much of a reason to lie to the worker.
"Gabriel Potter," Gabe said in turn. The agent wrote this down, looking up.
"Over there, you'll get your deeds."
Alex nodded, going to where they had been told to go.
Gabe followed after, lightly patted Alex's shoulder with a smile.
"We're going to do great," he said, giving a sloppy grin.
He smiled back. "We will." he agreed.
Gabe smiled, walking up to the next desk.
"Hello?"
Alex stayed beside Gabe, quiet.
The next person looked up.
"Land?"
Alex nodded slightly.
The man went through a few documents, pulling out one for each of them.
"Sign here."
Alex signed where he was told to, quiet.
Gabe did as well, lightly patting Alex's shoulder.
Alex glanced up at him for a moment, then away again.
Finally, their deeds were handed to them.
"It's a long way off," the man said. "And you'd best keep to your plots- your reckoning to get shot if you don't."
Alex nodded a little. "The plots…are they next to each other?" He asked, hoping they were.
"Should be," the man said, not looking up. "If someone hasn't been camping on the ground anyway."
