Nathaniel seemed to relax more as he got further into the song, closing his eyes. His voice trailed off as he finished and he nervously glanced back up at Ilya.
Nathaniel seemed to relax more as he got further into the song, closing his eyes. His voice trailed off as he finished and he nervously glanced back up at Ilya.
Ilya burst into applause, an amazed smile spread across his face. "That was beautiful, Nathaniel! You have the voice of an angel- which is kind of appropriate, I guess. What language was that?"
Nathaniel blushed a bit, looking away again. "Th-thanks… it's a Latin song. That's my first language."
"Fancy! You never told me you were bilingual." Ilya smiled teasingly at him, turning to maintain eye contact. "You have no reason to be ashamed, you know that right? It was really nice, you have a lot of talent."
He blushed more and hid his face in Ilya's chest. "It's nothing, really… almost all angels sing."
"It's a talent, and I'm proud of you for having it," Ilya insisted. "Besides, you obviously practice. Why not take a little pride in your work."
Nathaniel shrugged. "Really, I'm sure there are plenty of angels with better voices than me. Choir is a required class in our schooling…"
"So? There's always going to be someone better than you, that doesn't mean that you're not good or talented. It just means someone got to put a little more time into it."
"I… I dunno, singing is really more just a hobby than anything else…" Nathaniel replied weakly.
Ilya laughed. "You're very resistant to praise, aren't you? I just meant that your voice is enchanting and you sing very well." He ruffled Nathaniel's hair gently. "Let yourself accept that I like the way you sound."
"I just don't think I deserve your praise…" Nathaniel mumbled, fidgeting with his hands.
"Why?" Ilya asked, pulling Nataniel a little closer. "You practice your craft and you put in the work to sound good, why doesn't that deserve praise?"
"Well, you… y-you're overall amazing, and I'm just average, and I don't deserve praise from you…" He hid his red face in Ilya's chest.
"First of all, you're just as amazing as I am and second of all, everyone deserves praise if they work to do well." Ilya petted his hair gently. "Besides, I'm not as special as you think I am. I'm something of a disappointment as a fairy."
"Well, I'm something of a disappointment of an angel, so I think that makes us even." Nathaniel smiled softly and cuddled closer to Ilya.
Ilya laughed, hugging him gently in return. "Maybe we can form a little club out here. 'Nathaniel and Ilya's home for misfits' or something like that."
"Yeah… I can't fly right now, so that makes me pretty useless to the angel army despite how well I can fight on land."
Ilya frowned, arms tightening around him slightly. "What happens if you start to fly again. Will you have to go back?"
Nathaniel shook his head. "Nah… they won't take me back. Still gay, remember?"
Ilya's hold relaxed, but his frown only deepened. "That's fucked up. What do they have against being gay?"
"It's heaven… don't worry too much about it. They aren't a fan of homosexuality. Love the people, not the sin, right? Only problem is, angels aren't really supposed to sin… though there's nothing I can do about it, I refuse to pretend I'm straight. I'll love who I love."
"Hate the sin, love the sinner," Ilya mumbled, burying his face in Nathaniel's hair. "That's… awful. I'm glad you decided to be true to yourself, and I'm glad you managed to escape their army. And… um… I'm glad you managed to end up here."
"They can be a bit close minded up there…" Nathaniel said softly. "B-But if they hadn't kicked me out, I wouldn't have met you, right?"
Ilya nodded. "Right. I… Well, I'm not about to say it was a good thing that you got banished from your home, but I think life down here is… better. I mean, we may not be perfect, but we try our best to be good."
Nathaniel nodded. He hesitated several seconds before speaking again. "I… forgive me if this is an overstep, but-" He took a deep breath and pulled Ilya down to where he could reach him, kissing him gently.
