Does anyone here have specific tropes that they know aren’t very good, but they’re sort of your guilty pleasure trope? To read or write, doesn’t matter to me.

@Pickles group

Boarding schools no matter how terrible, girl from other world is in modern world and has a male love interest/guide thing
(That's all I can think of rn)

@Becfromthedead group

I'm personally a big sucker for anything even vaguely "friends to lovers," or "found family." I don't think they're bad tropes, necessarily, but I'm sure there are people out there who think they're overdone.

@The-N-U-T-Cracker

I like that trope too.
It’s just so satisfying to see characters working extremely hard just to reach the same level as the people around them.
It’s also very relatable

I feel like it can be done really well, it just bugs me when it's so obvious that they can't control their powers that you start to wonder why the hell they're in charge of their team (if they're the leader) or allowed to be in combat situations.

(I like it too, but when it's there solely for shock value/"look how eDgY I am" stuff, then it gets annoying. Hell, in all but one of my stories, characters get shot, stabbed, dislocate joints, break bones, beaten up, injured in explosions/fires, etc. One of the MCs breaks his leg early in and is on crutches for most of it, and another (in a completely different story) has a crutch because of a badly healed injury. But it needs a purpose beyond trying to seem mature/edgy.)

@hollow-boned

can we maybe stop having random like, sexual assault scenes??
also one thing i really hate in books written by cis men is the whole thing they do with describing peeing in uncomfortable detail
"his pee shooting for the stars" is a phrase i actually found. in a crime book. in a published crime book.

Or rape scenes that are there solely to show how eDgY a book it, and then it doesn't even deal with what the victim went through ever again.

Also, just no. Why would anyone care about a character peeing/pooping, it's gross. And while I get why a lot of people want to see periods discussed in books, I kinda don't because they're annoying and gross.

rape scenes were never edgy, they were gross asf (imo - Outlander made me sick when it came to this)
also, i realize a lot of characters don't seem to ever hear the "call of nature". Mentioning it in passing like "man, i gotta go, brb" is fine with me and realistic enough, but detailing the whole thing is a big no-no. Same with periods. Mentioning it in passing works just fine thank you

@The-N-U-T-Cracker

What do you mean you don't want to hear full, detailed descriptions taking up an entire page about the severity of some character's diarrhea?

…Why does that even exist

@Kinarymo

The most i'd want to hear about a character in a situation like that is them asking for another roll of paper
Thats it. nothing more
tbh, id would be even better if it would be brought up in a situation like:
"where's X?"
"he couldnt come"
"why?"
"Let's just say the tacos from lunch started to hit…"
