Especially since 'teenspeak' today is basically meme, fandom, and Vine references and slang like 'salty' and 'spill the tea'.
I mean, I reference fandom stuff because my main character is a nerd. And I know at one point she's gonna say 'Daaaaaaamn, Daniel!' like in the vine because her older brother's name is Daniel.
But if you fill a book with pop culture stuff, it totally dates the book. Look at The Princess Diaries, those are really dated.

When characters change their opinion of someone too fast based on something small like
"Oh, nevermind, look! He's cuddling with a puppy!"
"…he killed your family…"
"But he's cuddling a puppy! He should help us!"
And poorly written character changes like okay, I get that they're going to change especially since their lover and family died in front of them, but that doesn't mean they're going to know flawless technique defending themselves

Or when a character does something that crosses the line and they just??? Forgive them??
I swear, in YA a 'bad boy' could kill everyone the MC knows and the author would still shoehorn in a cheap excuse…

Okay I hate it when authors (especially authors who are like 50) try to use 'teenspeak' in their books

My favourite is when you have a text/online conversation happening and it plays out like this
char 1: Hey! how r u?
char 2: g8. do u want 2 hang 2moro?

This kind of thing might have been more prevalent in like the mid 2000s when you had to press the same button 3 times to get one letter in a text, but these days? Everyone I know who regularly texts like that is a grown adult.

I mean, I reference fandom stuff

I'd say do this in moderation. I read a book where the characters kept talking about their fandoms and like every page I was getting bombarded with all these fandom references. Maybe there's people out there who may have appreciated it, but as someone who was not in the fandoms, I found it kinda irritating.

@The-N-U-T-Cracker

The only person I know who actually says “LOL” or “Totes Adorbs” out loud is my 40-something-year-old dad whenever he’s speaking to me in public.

Yeah my tween sister (who actually uses the word 'tween') says 'LOL' and stuff, but literally no one my age does.

Yeah, only my mom says stuff like that… and it's the worst.
My friends and I sometimes do say certain things ironically, but usually the things we do say are more along the lines of memes and shouting swears at each other. Usually the teenspeak/"cringey" things we do are making fun of teenspeak in the first place.
(I also just finished reading a book that takes place in the future, and these future teens have new teenspeak, and hooooo boy, did I hate it.)

Honestly my friends and I text in cringy pickup lines and Shakespeare references, and if we shorten something it's usually only 'because' to 'bc' and 'though' to 'tho'

I think by adding a damn Daniel reference you're adding to the problem

Yeah but it's unrealistic for a teenage girl in the late 10's to not make vine references. And it's not a constant thing, it's just once.

My friend wants me to read all the Cassie Clare books but I'm starting with TID since it's supposed to be the best, I got the first one from the library today….
