"It seems okay so far. And I've basically been here," Miran gestures back at the math room, "and some LA room in… that building, I think." He points towards the building. "Otherwise… I have no idea what this place looks like." He laughs softly. "I don't even know where to eat lunch."
"Well I don't doubt that Gracie will be more than happy to show you where you can eat. She seemed itching to show you around earlier." He let out a little chuckle and winked teasingly. "You never know, she might like you."
"Oh." A flash of emotion crossed Miran's face, gone as soon as it appeared. "Do you see her around? Oh, and could you tell me the bell schedule or something? This place is very different from… well, you know." Miran looked at Kai. "I was going to ask you in math, but the teacher seemed kind of… angry."
Kai glanced around the space he was stood in, but he couldn't see Gracie, or Etta, anywhere. "She's probably still in class, asking for extra work or something. As for the bell schedule…" He rummaged around in his bag, pretending to ignore the change quick show of emotion, and found a slightly crumpled piece of paper. "This has the timetable on it, telling you when each lesson starts and ends, and when each break time is. You need it more than I do." he held it out towards Miran with a smile.
"Thanks." Miran smiles. "You really are my knight in shining armor today." He pressed his lips together, suppressing a smile, and looked at the ground. "I… no one but Gracie has been this nice to me."
"Perhaps it's because they are scared to approach you. Greeting someone on their first day can be really intimidating, especially if they have never seen them before. It's just knowing the right things to say." Kai placed his hands on his hips, and a very proud expression formed on his face. "I take great pride in delivering a warm welcome to every new student." then he paused and let out a meek laugh. "However I don't like being the first one to do it."
"Well, I'm glad you did it." Miran smiled softly. "And I meant, in most of my time at school, no one has been this nice." He shrugged. "You're one of the first friends I've had in a long time. And I hope you'll stay that way."
"I guess I will have to." Kai put his arm around Miran's shoulder, patting him gently. "Can't have you being friendless, now can we?" His smile was bright, he hadn't smiled so much in his entire life as he had that day. While they waited for Gracie, he decided to ask a few questions. "So what brings you to this school then?"
"Uh…" Miran sighed heavily. "I… had a bit of… trouble with the kids at the other school." He looked at the ground. "I… got in a fight with some of them over… well, something personal. It got a bit ugly." He glanced at Kai. "I got kicked out."
Kai felt a newfound respect for Miran, his eyebrows raised, his eyes glimmered. "Really? You, and fight? I think you and I are going to be better friends than you thought." he rubbed the back of his head, feeling a little silly for gushing like that. "It's a shame you being kicked out though, it's not nice moving to a new school when you know literally no one."
"Yeah." Miran shrugged. "I'm actually pretty glad I moved. I don't think I could stand another second there." His eyes flashed angrily. "That kid got what he deserved." Miran remembered that day- the screams, the taunts, the overwhelming anger, pent up from months of endless insults and… It wasn't good to dwell on the past. He shook his head. "Sorry."
(Sorry I was on a trip)
Gracie emerged, a trailing Etta behind. "Sorry for the wait guys, I was getting a textbook," she grimaced and adjusted her grip on the large science textbook. "So… where are we going next?" she asked, unaware of what they had just been talking about, but took note of the angry look in Miran's eyes.
(It's cool)
"I don't know." Miran tried to get his emotions under control. "Sorry." He winced. "Uh… where do you normally go right now?"
"Actually, I need to go to history," Gracie replied, grimacing again. "I'm gonna have to carry another textbook after that… Anyways, what about you two?"
"I have…" Miran pulled his schedule from his pocket and grins. "History in room 284?" He asks hopefully. "Because if that's right, then you and I have the same class!" He turns to Kai. "What about you?"
Rubbing the back of her neck, Gracie struggled to remember what the office had told her. Aaaaah I can't rememberrrrrrr wait It was 280 something I know…I think it's 284… Let's just go with that haha she thought. "Yes, indeed! How about you, um sorry, what's your name?"
Kai glanced at Gracie, then averted his eyes the floor as he mumbled. "Kai Ashmore. I have music. Catch you both later." he turned to walk out of the building, shoving his hands in his pockets. He didn't look back even once. Miran was in capable hands, he wasn't needed for the time being.
"I'll see you later, Kai," Miran calls after him. "Don't think you can get away from me so easy!" He turns to Gracie and smiles. "So, history. Is there a "history" building here, or…?" He trails off.
"Oh, um ok! Bye Kai!" Gracie calls out, surprised by the sudden exit. "Well, for that we're going to have to head to the main building."
A faint smile curled up on Kai's lips as he heard Miran calling after him. At least he was needed by someone outside of his band. Speaking of his band, he could see them in the line to go into the classroom. Toby, Alexis, Opal and September. Together with Kai they were the most mischievous, rebellious group in the year, possibly the entire school. They had been known to start fights, vandalize property, skip class, but the one thing that kept them all out of trouble was music. Kai threw the group a wink as he made his way into the classroom. He didn't wait for the teacher to say they could come in. The group made their way to the back of the room, sitting as close to each other as possible. The teacher gave a very disapproving look but he knew better than to argue.
"Lead the way," Miran casts one last glance the way that Kai went. "Is history hard?" He asks, turning back to Gracie. "Do we have to take a lot of notes? We had to take a lot of notes at my old school, and," He leans closer to Gracie, as if telling a secret, "I am terrible at taking notes about things that don't interest me."
"Well, the class isn't so much notes, but projects. Sometimes we have to fill out outline sheets for our projects, but it's not too much. However, the main course of the class, if I say so myself is rather how to make a history project, instead of history," Gracie laughs softly.
"Oh, good." Miran groans. "I love projects. Do we get to work with a partner, or are they usually solo projects?"
"Um, depends." Gracie replied, as they walked through the glass doors of the main building. (Ok, they didn't literally walk through them ok? It's just I have no other way to say it) Taking note of the room numbers, she saw one that seemed familiar. Glancing up just a bit higher, she saw that this was a history classroom. "Hey, this must be the one…"
Miran looked around, trying to memorize the location of the classroom. He couldn't help but wonder what Kai was doing. What does one do in music class, anyway, besides play music?
"After you," Miran waved Gracie into the classroom, then followed her inside.
