Magicgate Uprising 1967
Some of the villagers wanted to use the magic that was reserved for only the mages and shamans to use. After a dispute broke out between these villagers and the shamans/mages/rest of the villagers, the former group decided to separate from the rest, stealing the sacred spellbook and destroying the magically-grown crops before retreating into the Bermuda Woods.
After this, the shamans and mages made the decision to send some of their villagers into the Bermuda Woods to hunt and forage, but the forest-dwellers caught on and started using black magic to scare them off. Many villagers were either killed or put under strong magic spells during this time. The villagers who survived reported back to the shamans and mages, who came up with a plan to train their remaining and future villagers to fend against magical attacks or prevent themselves from falling into traps so they could hunt and forage safely.
