Crystals of the Soul - Manual Timeline

Backstory

1940 - The Sacred Spellbook of the La Magie is Written

A group of young villagers start a club where they can learn and practice magic in secret, because there is a ban on everyone in the village - including authorities - using magic. They call this group the La Magie Order. To assist in honing their craft, they record all their spells in a book that they title Sacred Spellbook of the La Magie. They keep this book hidden from the authorities as well.

Pkinism is Founded

Fredrick Griffin decides to start a religion called Pkinism, which is centered around self-awareness, personal growth, and integration through the use of a set of Archetypes created by a young (12-24 years of age) Practitioner. He starts this religion because he doesn't like how restrictive the Ordre Village was, and wants to create more nurturing upbringings for the new generations (and more personally, for his son, William).

He sets this up with a few roles in mind:

Note: This religion is actually real, but it wasn't founded in 1955; rather, it was founded in 2008 by the author of the story, Ren Moulaison (who was the first Pkin Practitioner ever), when she was 12 years old.

Tragic Accident Leads to Villager Magic Ban

William accidentally casts a magic spell that kills Theodore during a private magic lesson. Because of William's generally skillful use of magic, though, the entire village doesn't think it was an accident (despite not being there to witness it) and start viewing him as a cold-blooded murderer. This leads to the elders cracking down and banning any average villager from using magic (further enforcing this by confiscating and destroying each villager's personal spellbook, starting with William's), and reserving its use only for shamans and elder mages for practical purposes, like manifesting materials to make Physical Pkin Archetypes or detecting abusive behavior in Pkin Mentors.

Cynthia White is Born

Judith's younger sister and the reincarnation of Theodore Daniels, Cynthia White, is born to Robert and Linda White.

Magicgate Uprising

Some of the villagers (led by William, who has now grown unbearably frustrated about the magic ban and developed immense amounts of self-hatred because of the accident) decide they want to use the magic that's reserved for only the mages and shamans to use. After a dispute breaks out between these villagers and the shamans/mages/rest of the village, the former group decides to separate from the rest, stealing the Sacred Spellbook and destroying the magically-grown crops before retreating into a nearby forest called Bermuda Woods.

After this, the shamans and mages make the decision to send some of their villagers into the Bermuda Woods to hunt and forage (as well as attempt to retrieve the Spellbook), but the forest-dwellers catch on and start using black magic to scare them off. Many villagers either get killed or put under strong magical curses during this time. The villagers who survive report back to the shamans and mages, who come up with a plan to train their remaining and future villagers from the ages of 15 and up to fend against magical attacks or prevent themselves from falling into traps so they can hunt and forage (and eventually retrieve the Spellbook) safely.

William Griffin Finishes His Pkin Cycle

1973 - Souterrain Tunnel Built

The Soutterrain Tunnel - an underground tunnel in the Bermuda Woods existing for the purpose of transferring souls to the Afterlife - is magically constructed by William, stemming from his belief about life being so cruel that it would be better for everyone to live in the Afterlife (due to the depression that resulted from being shunned by his own people). He creates a belief system based off of this called Monterism - which comes from the French "monter," meaning "ascend."

Inside the Tunnel includes a trap door and ladder and leading down to it, a display near the ladder for a bunch of active enchanted necklaces called Crystal Amulets, a long hallway lit with torches with a bunch of rooms attached - including the Transfer Circle, which is where encapsulated souls go to be transferred to the Afterlife - and a stairway exit at the other end.

After the Tunnel is built, William starts Droning people's bodies - the process of extracting/encapsulating souls using the Crystal Amulets and a potion called the Navire Elixir - (particularly, very young people) for the purpose of transferring souls to the Afterlife before death; the reason he does this instead of outright killing them is because doing the latter would reinforce the notion of him being a heinous murderer, which was never his intention.

1976 - Gideon Persephone Gets Droned

14 year-old Gideon enters the Tunnel and gets Droned by William. Unfortunately, during this process, another accident occurs where William gives him too much of the Navire Elixir and Gideon becomes power hungry at an alarming rate. Because of this, William realizes that everything he's done in the Tunnel is wrong - but because the environment of the Tunnel has become so dangerous and out of control due to Gideon's reign, he has no choice but to leave the remaining Drones and flee back by himself to the La Magie Village, leaving Gideon as the next leader.

At the Village, William confesses his wrongdoings to the villagers and expresses his deep guilt for all that he's done - after which, most of the villagers (with the exception of the Daniels family) accept his apology and the elders welcome him back without lifting the magic ban at the Daniels' request, and he thereafter is able to live peacefully in the village.

1977 - Thomas Daniels and Lorinda Johnson Start Their Pkin Cycles

1978

Lisa Griffin and David Tanners Start Their Pkin Cycles

Michelle Wolff and James Austin Start Their Pkin Cycles

1979 - Rivaling Sisters Discover the Tunnel

Judith White and Cynthia White - two sisters (ages 16 and 14, respectively) in a toxic sibling rivalry - are in the middle of an intense screaming match when they stumble across the trap door leading down to the Souterrain Tunnel. Judith (the more materialistic of the two) gets Droned because she's drawn to the Crystal Amulets and because Gideon seduces her; and because Cynthia (the more empathic and clever sister) is annoyed about Judith's materialism, she welcomes her sister's sudden lack of interest in wearing her Amulet over time even though she finds it rather odd. But then, as more time passes, she realizes that Judith is acting more toxic and manipulative than usual (which she didn't realize before because this was somewhat normal for them); and just when she realizes what's going on, the curse has already taken such a dangerous and invasive hold on Judith that reversing it would be almost impossible.

But, Cynthia still wants to find a way to reverse the curse because she values giving everyone a second chance - so she decides to stay in the Tunnel until she can find an antidote so she can free both her sister and herself.

EQUILIBRIUM

Pre-Bermuda Woods Bonfire

In the same shot as William running across the border back to the Village in "Gideon Persephone Gets Droned," we see our main protagonist (William's granddaughter, now 15 year-old Raven Tanners) standing near said border, looking into the woods in a determined, daring and excited way; now 70 year-old William catches her there, joining her as they both look on at the dangerous forest. Raven says she's excited to go into the woods the next day so she can be the hero the village needs, and William warns her to not get too ahead of herself, a look of regret in his eyes as he remembers his younger years.

They both head back to the Village, where a bonfire is taking place in celebration of the new recruits' training graduation. After she and her grandfather stop at a table to pick out weapons and other essentials, Raven goes to sit around the fire (next to her best friend Chrissy), to brag to her peers about going to the border. This then segues into a resentful Percy telling her, "Jesus, Raven! Can't you just wait till tomorrow to boast about your 'adventures'?" There's a pause as everyone looks at him. He continues, "When we all see what's beyond that border, then you can brag about how 'heroic' you supposedly are!"

Raven stands up and tells him, "You're just jealous because Chrissy and I got that job and you didn't!"

Percy scoffs, crossing his arms, and replies, "Oh yeah, the job of getting that precious spellbook your murderer of a grandpa stole from us? And what none of our other villagers have been able to retrieve for over 65 years? That book?" Raven looks at him with a clenched jaw, seething as the air around the fire thickens with tension. "That book is rightfully mine and my family's to look for, and we both know that."

Raven lowly replies, "Look, Percy, my grandfather may have stolen that book - and yes, he realizes it was wrong and he apologized - but that spell was an accident; he never meant to kill your Grandpa Ted!"

"How do you know? You weren't even there!" Percy snarls.

"Neither were you, considering you weren't even born yet and there were no witnesses," Raven retorts. Percy is left speechless and Raven gathers herself before calmly telling him, "Look, I'm not going to stand here and tell you or your family that you have to forgive him; he already has enough trouble doing that himself. All I can say is that he knows he screwed up, and he's deeply sorry."

After this, Raven starts tearing up and retreats to her family's tent, where Chrissy (who has a deep affinity for jewelry due to growing a collection of it from her parents' adventures in the woods) follows her and reassures her that Percy only said that because he's nervous about venturing into the woods because it's so dangerous (and because he's jealous that she gets the job of searching for the Spellbook); she also reminds her best friend that it's okay for her to be nervous, too, and that she doesn't have to be heroic all the time - because in Chrissy's eyes, Raven will always be a hero. This comment - as well as Chrissy's loving eye contact - causes Raven to get butterflies in her stomach, but she brushes it off because 1) she thinks she and Chrissy are both straight, and 2) she wants to be a hero not just to Chrissy, but to the village because she views William as a hero.

First Day in the Bermuda Woods

Raven, Chrissy and their La Magie peers all go into the Bermuda Woods for the first time. Partway into the forest, the group splits off into pairs, with Raven and Chrissy being one of them. Some pairs hunt and forage in the forest, while others (like Raven and Chrissy) try to find the Sacred Spellbook, fending off and finding ways to avoid attacks in the process. After a considerable amount of this throughout the day, they all head back to the village to share their game, pickings and stories about the day's work. Raven doesn't have any epic stories to share, silently glancing at Percy, and remarks that she wishes the day had been more exciting and adventurous.

CATALYST

Raven and Chrissy Discover the Tunnel

Partway through day two on the job - unbeknownst to Raven and Chrissy - now 51 year-old Gideon Persephone eavesdrops on one of their conversations about where the Spellbook could be and releases a pack of vicious hungry wolves into the forest. Raven and Chrissy find themselves being chased by these wolves and trying to fend them off. After a bit, the wolves end up chasing them to a clearing and circling them. Just as they're about to be eaten alive, Chrissy steps on a trap door in the middle of the clearing and insists that she and Raven scramble inside. Raven protests, saying that she wants to have an epic story for later about them taking out all the wolves, but Chrissy frantically opens the trap door and practically drags her best friend down the ladder - following after her, closing the trapdoor and tying the rope tightly so it locks.

After calming her breath, Raven says, "You couldn't let me have one exciting moment?"

Chrissy argues back, saying, "That's what you're worried about?! Raven, I just saved both of our lives! Couldn't you at least be grateful for that? And besides, what's more exciting than a near-death experience?! You got your wish, didn't you?"

Raven quietly says, "Yeah..... I just wish it could've been me who was the hero, that's all."

Chrissy then softens her gaze and reminds her, looking deeply into her eyes, "I know. But.... you'll be always be a hero to me, remember?"

Raven blushes at this, saying yes, but then deflects it by looking away; and it's at this moment that Raven spots a display full of beautiful jewelry, and becomes enraptured by it. She motions to the display, beckoning Chrissy to take a closer look. Chrissy, hesitant and aware that it might be a trap, says that it's not a good idea - but Raven walks toward the display anyway. Chrissy sighs, knowing it's probably no use for the moment, and turns to light the torches in the room.

Except, she soon discovers, it's not a room at all. It's a tunnel - and the trap door, ladder and jewelry display is just the entrance. Chrissy grows more wary upon learning this, looking around the area nervously as Raven spies a particular artefact on the display: a Crystal Amulet with the glowing reflection of someone's eye inside the jewel. Raven again says, gazing unwaveringly at the Amulet, "Chrissy.... you gotta take a look at this..."

Chrissy, taking one last look around the entrance to the tunnel, curiously steps up to the display to look at the Amulet; and she, too, finds it to be one of the most beautiful things she's ever laid her eyes on. She considers taking one as a souvenir, but with a special twist (since she doesn't know how it actually works to make one): she wants to make a custom one with the reflection of Raven's eyes so that she can admire it, because she's also secretly in love with Raven.

At that moment, they hear a voice that breaks their stupor.

Chrissy Gets Droned

"So, I see you've found my jewelry collection!" A young woman's voice sultrily muses.

Raven and Chrissy jump a little at the sound, as they turn to see a sight even more beholden than the Amulet. The girl looks to be about their age, maybe a little older. And she's mesmerizing, with silvery eyes that could suck you into the deepest of trances if you're not careful - and maybe even if you are.

Shaking herself out of her stupor, Chrissy says, "Uh.... hi." She then turns back to the jewelry display and asks the girl, "This is all yours?"

The girl nods with a small smirk.

Judith leads the two best friends to the lounge area of the Tunnel and offers the two a beverage as they sit on a loveseat. Chrissy graciously accepts the offer, but Raven says, "No thanks, I'm not thirsty." Judith presses her on this. Raven stands her ground and tells her again, "I said, no thanks." The girl smiles and heads to the kitchen. Raven turns to Chrissy and tells her that this girl seems a bit sketchy and asks if she feels the same, but Chrissy says she thinks she's nice.

Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Judith panics a little and deliberates on what to do next as she makes the Navire Elixir - the potion that's responsible for extracting souls from people's bodies and trapping them in the Crystal Amulets.

In the lounge, Raven gets frustrated (if not a little jealous) and tells Chrissy she's only saying that she thinks Judith is a chill person because she gave her nice jewelry - but that they should also remember they're in the Bermuda Woods, for crying out loud, and they have a job to do. Chrissy retorts this by saying, "Well, maybe we can get it done here!" because she's still secretly planning to make the Amulet.

Judith decides that she'll let Raven's refusal go for now and instead extract Chrissy's soul with the Elixir, opting to use a harmless sedative mist on Raven so she won't suspect anything. After preparing the beverage, she grabs the sedative mist (disguised as perfume) and walks back out to the lounge.

She hands Chrissy the clear quartz cup of disguised Navire Elixir, who takes it and thanks her, and starts drinking. Taking note of this, Judith takes out the sedative mist and says how she thinks the air smells. But Raven says she thinks it smells fine. Judith gives her a bitchy look before spraying the air as Chrissy continues sipping her drink.

Pretty soon, both of the best friends start feeling the effects. Raven falls asleep almost immediately; Chrissy, on the other hand, starts tremoring as she feels her soul getting violently sucked out of her body and into the Amulet around her neck. After this, her eyes turn silver and her soulless body collapses (sound asleep) back on the loveseat, Judith smiling sadistically at her success. After this, she then walks over to Chrissy's Droned body and removes the Amulet before leaving the lounge.

Judith Offers An Alternative Luring Method

After leaving the lounge, Judith arrives at the Transfer Circle, where Gideon demands she give him Chrissy's Amulet and questions her on why she didn't get Raven's as well. Judith informs him that she feels Raven is too smart to trick or even keep in the Dungeon, and that's when she shares her alternative plan to ensnare the girl: she will wait for a certain period of time without transferring Chrissy's soul before planting the Amulet in their path - just to give the effects of the curse time to marinate and then trigger Chrissy's Drone abilities, so she can capture Raven's soul instead (since they have a much stronger bond with each other than Raven has with Judith).

Gideon considers this for a moment, thinking out loud in proper villain fashion, and then says, "Okay! I will let you carry out this.... alternative method. If you succeed, I will transfer your soul to the Afterlife; but if you fail...... I will crack your precious Amulet, leaving your soul to wander about down here."

Judith responds to this with, "What should I do in the meantime, Master?"

Giving her his most sinister smirk, Gideon says, "Go find your sister."

Cynthia Reflects on Her Relationship With Judith

Cynthia, now a 48 year-old woman, is writing in her journal while hiding from Judith and looking at various potion ingredients. So far, she has almost all the ingredients she needs to create the antidote, but she's missing the one that will activate it - and this is deeply troubling to her because of how long and hard she's been fighting to save her sister. While she's doing this, she looks into the eye reflection of Judith's Amulet and thinks back to her fight with her sister when they were teenagers, and we get mini-flashbacks of "Rivaling Sisters Discover the Tunnel".

Raven and the Chrissy Drone Wake Up

Raven and Chrissy's Drone wake up in the lounge to find that both Judith and the Crystal Amulet are no longer there. Upon discovering this, they get up and decide to walk down the Tunnel to look for it, with Chrissy's Drone looking noticeably out of it. Raven half-jokes about Judith possibly having laced her drink with something, and Chrissy's Drone gives her a mildly cold response, which is a little out of the ordinary for her. Raven is a little hurt by this, but brushes it off because they just woke up, and they start their walk down the Tunnel. She also notices something else is off about Chrissy, but can't quite place what it is.

Chrissy's Descent/Judith Looks For Cynthia (Montage)

Over time, Chrissy's Drone gets increasingly more rude, dismissive, manipulative and passive aggressive as they look for the Amulet, and Raven grows increasingly more hurt by her actions - knowing that this isn't who her best friend is - and starts to wonder what's going on.

Interlaced with this, Cynthia's hears Judith back at her hiding spot, sneaking around and trying to find her Amulet; Cynthia immediately packs this and her Elixir ingredients into her bag as quietly as she can so she can escape to a different area of the Tunnel. Judith calls out Cynthia's name tauntingly, giving out false promises about not hurting her as Cynthia hides behind a wall. As Judith draws closer, Cynthia stealthily steps further away. This soon turns into a wild goose chase sequence where Judith comes close to finding Cynthia several times but fails.

BIG EVENT

Judith Activates Chrissy's Drone Powers

After a couple of weeks have passed, Raven and Chrissy have an argument about the Amulet; during this argument, Judith - having failed at finding her sister - walks over to them with Chrissy's Amulet in hand, asking if they're looking for it.

Chrissy's Drone says yes and attempts to grab it from her, but Judith stops her and goes to place it around her neck; "Chrissy" then steps back and frowns at her as if she just did something unforgivable, and yet she still wants to snatch it from Judith's grasp; as Chrissy's encapsulated soul looks on in confusion, Raven notices that the Drone's eyes have turned silver. Frowning in confusion, she then looks down at the Amulet - recognizing the reflection of Chrissy's warm, blue eyed gaze inside of it - puts two and two together and realizes that it isn't Chrissy.

As Raven starts to ask what's going on, Chrissy's Drone powers fully activate - and both she and Judith back Raven into a wall, reciting Monterist rhetoric about the Afterlife being better than the life they're living and that they'd both be better off there. Horrified at the dangerous shell of a human Chrissy has become (Chrissy's soul being just as horrified), Raven goes to snatch the Amulet out of Judith's grasp.

Judith notices this and retracts it from her reach, knowing what could happen if she loses it. This quickly turns into a fight between the two over the Amulet. Eventually, Raven successfully grabs it and runs as fast as she can down the Tunnel, Judith and Chrissy chasing after her, before her soul can get sucked out, too - and so she can try to get answers about how to free her best friend.

Raven Meets Cynthia

Raven eventually finds an empty room in the Tunnel so she can hide from Judith and Chrissy's Drones. Once the Drones have disappeared further down the Tunnel, she looks down at the Amulet in her hand, Chrissy's eye staring empathetically back at her. At this, she slides down against the wall, letting out shaky sobs. She doesn't even see that Cynthia is in there, but the older woman soon makes her presence known, and both of them freak out - each one drawing their weapons - at first thinking the other is a Drone out to capture their soul.

But soon enough, they realize it's safe to trust each other because of the lack of silver eyes and extreme negativity. Cynthia is the first to figure this out - because at this point, she is a seasoned professional at spotting Drones - and once she does, she says, "Wait.... blue eyes..... you're one of me?"

Refusing to lower her sword, a confused, skeptical Raven asks, "One of you? What do you mean by that?"

Cynthia then frantically asks, "You're not a Drone?"

And Raven, still confused and scared, asks, "What does that mean? What is a Drone?"

Cynthia lets out a sigh, and decides to be more clear. "Did anyone offer you a drink and a necklace when you first got here?"

"The drink, yes. Not the necklace, though."

"Okay. Did you drink it?"

That's when Raven starts to get it (and we see brief flashbacks of Chrissy drinking the Elixir), and, lowering her sword in thought, she replies, "No. No, I didn't."

Cynthia breathes out a sigh of relief and says, "Oh thank god!" Raven still looks confused, so Cynthia decides to explain. "That drink is a dangerous Elixir. Not physically dangerous, but dangerous nonetheless. It's called the Navire Elixir. Whoever consumes it, gets their soul sucked out of their body."

"Why? What would someone want to do with a disembodied soul?"

"Send it to heaven early. Whoever started this whole system must've thought they were doing everyone a favor."

With a look of dread on her face, Raven asks, "And the necklace?"

"Crystal Amulet. Once the Elixir is taken, the soul bends its allegiance to the Amulet and gets encased in it.... so that it can pass safely from here to the Afterlife."

"And all that's left is a soulless Drone," Raven says with realization.

"Wait! How do I know that I can actually trust you?" Raven questions, lifting her sword back up and narrowing her eyes. "You're not wearing contacts or something just to fool me, are you?"

"Well, you probably shouldn't be trusting me anyway, because I'm a stranger and significantly older than you; but if I were a Drone, I wouldn't need to wear those things - since they can change their eye colors with magic just like that."

There's a pregnant pause as Raven looks at Cynthia skeptically, before saying, "Okay..... I feel like a Drone probably wouldn't be stupid enough to reveal their own manipulation tactics, so.... you're good."

Raven then lowers her sword"I'm Raven," she says, offering her hand.

"Cynthia," The older woman replies, smiling as she accepts the handshake.

"So how'd you know I wasn't one of them?"

Cynthia chuckles. "I've been in this Tunnel for a lot longer than you have, kiddo; I know a Drone when I see one."

"Huh.... How much longer?"

"About 35 years.... yeah, my sister's been trapped down here since we were teenagers... ever since she was turned. And I've been down here trying to find an antidote ever since..... and trying to hide from all of them in the meantime so I don't get Droned myself."

"I see," Raven nods.

"So how'd you get down here?"

"Pack of ravenous wolves." Raven chuckles. "They chased us all the way over to the trapdoor and we just sorta scrambled down here to get away from them."

"We?"

Raven's face falls. "Yeah." She slides back down the wall. "My best friend and I. I may not have drank the stuff you mentioned, but...... I have a feeling that she did."

Cynthia looks at her with empathy in her eyes, and Raven glances at her and continues with tears threatening to fall, "I just ran away from her. She's been acting really weird around me the last few weeks. Rude, cold, manipulative. Anything but herself." She continues, a sob escaping her throat. "But today, she acted borderline demonic. I'd never seen her like that before. It scared me so much, and I don't know what to do."

As Raven curls up into a ball, body wracking with sobs, Cynthia goes into protective mother mode, immediately walking over and holding her in comfort.

Meanwhile, inside the Amulet, Chrissy is feeling powerless over the situation.

REALIZATION

Raven Convinces the Daniels Family to Lift the Magic Ban

Upon arriving back at the La Magie Village with all the recovered Drone victims and presenting the retrieved Sacred Spellbook, Raven addresses Patriarch Wolff and the other Elders and tells him about the whole ordeal that happened in the Tunnel; she informs them that, yes, William may have gotten them all into this mess by using magic, but it was also the use of magic that got her, Chrissy, Judith, Cynthia and everyone in the Tunnel out of their mess - and therefore, the villagers as well as the Elders should be allowed to practice it.

Patriarch Wolff then tells her that although he and the other Elders would love to lift the ban, they're not the ones she should be stating her case to - and gestures behind her to the Daniels family.

She nods in understanding of this and walks over to Susan, Thomas, Lorinda and Percy. She tells them that she understands if they still don't want the ban lifted because of their grief, and that she can take not having magic in her life if it means honoring their wishes - but she also tells them that she thinks magic could be the vital key they're all missing in their lives and that they could be depriving themselves and others of having amazing life experiences by being ruled by fear all the time.

And then she says that although she's only going off of what she's heard about Theodore - she also doesn't think he would want them to live in fear, either.

The Daniels' consider her words for a moment, before Percy speaks. "You know what? She's right. I'm tired of holding grudges. That's not what Grandpa Ted was about." Raven's expression brightens at this as Percy turns to her. "And honestly, from what I've heard, your grandpa didn't really give anyone a reason not to trust him.... before the incident, that is. I vote yes." He turns to his parents and grandmother, waiting expectantly for their verdict.
