Irving was born to one of the many noble houses of Avenant, and it was a life he was content with. The throne was never on his mind, but one day at one of the many balls hosted by the nobility he met an elven woman and fell in love with her. In those days his primary concern was not politics or knowing anything about it, much to the chagrin of his parents who wished he'd become more involved in the political landscape of the country, so he had no idea the woman was the princess. He simply knew her as Miranda, another noble, and he courted her.
So of course it was a shock when she realized he didn't know who she was beyond being of the higher nobility and decided to tell him the truth. She feared that perhaps he would no longer love her if he knew the political responsibility that would come from a furthered relationship with her, but Irving was truly in love and decided that he would, for her, learn how to navigate politically and be suitable to rule with her.
It took time and effort, but Irving was willing to put it in. His parents were proud, of course, and did what they could to help him down that road. In time Irving and Miranda were married, and he became prince to her princess. They lived quite happily until the passing of Miranda's father, at which time her mother realized it was better to abdicate the throne to her daughter than to keep ruling alone. Miranda became queen, though Irving kept the title of prince to symbolize that she still had more power than he did.
Eventually the pair gave birth to a daughter named Muriel Santis and their life seemed idyllic. Then a random accident claimed Miranda's life, and everything when spiraling for Irving. Muriel left to explore the world and prepare for taking over the throne, and Irving tried to find anyone who could bring Miranda back to him. He was willing to pay any cost, but quite simply most were not able and those who could were unwilling, claiming the queen did not wish to return and was satisfied to wait for Irving in the afterlife.
Eventually Riker Millian came into the scene, touting himself as a suitable candidate to help the king (as he had become upon the queen's death) find people to bring the queen back and be his right hand until that point. Muriel also came home to help where she could, and for now Irving is still in charge and doing his job while secretly looking for ways to resurrect his beloved Miranda.
Irving passed in 1450 after a long battle with illness. Some suspect Riker may have poisoned the king to get him out of the way, others say the official story that the grief over the loss of his wife was too much and it killed him. Either way most hope he is at peace now, and perhaps with his beloved wife in the afterlife.
