Askar was born in a land far from Jilea, and was captured by slavers at 5 years old. He became a slave until he was 15, when he escaped and came to Jilea. Armed with a sword and his guitar, he wandered the land as an adventurer/bard. There are a few tales told of him. He met his soon-to-be wife at age 26, and they soon got married. They had Jasper a year later, and his wife died in childbirth. They moved from Toathe to Darvi when Jasper was 11, by which time Askar was already a semi-wealthy, well known merchant. He expected/expects Jasper to follow in his footsteps as a merchant, no matter that Jasper doesn't want to be one.
