Nathanail lives with his grandfather in a small stone house that was built right against the city wall. That being said the rest of his family is not dead they just live on the other side of town as they are not interested in the pumpkin business. Nathanail is also a middle child of 11 siblings and the only one with hearing lose.
He is able to discern high pitched sounds such as the bray of his donkey, but lower pitched sounds tend to be muffled if not completely absent. His grandfather gets around this by speaking very loudly as the pitch of his voice goes up. Nathanail can also lip read. He is able to speak because his hearing lose happened around eight years old.
