"You remember me! Lovely. One moment, I'll make you more comfortable." He snapped his fingers, and the gag and blindfold fell away, revealing a dimly lit office with a deep carpet and impressive bookshelves. Blake sat at his desk facing you, a friendly smile on his face. "Now then. Do you have any idea why you're here?"
Nathan blinked, eyes adjusting to the lighting. "I have no idea why you brought me here." he countered calmly. His eyes raked the room, searching for any detail as to where he was.
A window on your right looked out on a sea of treetops, followed by low mountains. You recognized the view, so you couldn't be too far from home.
"You are here," Blake was saying, "because I need you do do something for me, Nathan. A little favor, nothing too difficult. It involves your new friends."
Nathan's stare left the window and wandered back to Lonan. "What do you want with them?" he questioned cautiously.
"It's quite simple, really. Their auras happen to be of a unique variety. If properly collected and synthesized, their individual energies have the ability to alter fate." He leaned forward. "I'm bored. I need to stir things up a bit. It won't hurt them, don't worry. But I need them rather soon." He sighed. "This world is altogether far too dull for a being of my power. I'm sure you understand."
Nathan processed all this. Lonan Blake wanted to steal his auras, and synthesize them? "What'll they lose? Their powers? Their memories?"
"Hmm. You are a cautious one. Generally, their memories are the first thing to go. They shouldn't lose much, I'll only be taking a little. Perhaps their childhood memories, no more."
The idea was revolting. Transferring someone's childhood into someone else for the sake of a more interesting life? "What's the second thing to go?"
Blake shook his head. "They might feel a bit confused at first, but I'm sure they'll get used to it. Come now, it's not like you've known them long, have you? No doubt you'll be glad to get that demon boy in particular out of your hair. Just look at how much he eats! Besides, I can repay you handsomely for this little favor. That job you've been wanting? It's all arranged. I can have you making a hundred dollars an hour in a jiffy." He spread his hands invitingly. "What do you say?"
Nathan was tempted. If they didn't get hurt, where was the problem? And, of course, most of them probably wouldn't want to remember their childhood anyway, what with Maddie's torture and Crash's demon past.
But he had betrayed before. He had hurt loved ones before. And he knew first hand how it would crush fragile Maddie, playful Crash, and probably repulse his Lillian. He inhaled deeply and looked Blake directly in the eye.
"No."
Blake paused, looking disappointed. "No? You're quite sure? I'll only give this offer once, you know."
Nathan smiled sweetly. "I'm sure."
He sighed. "Well…I certainly don't want to employ someone who isn't loyal. You may go. But I would keep an eye on your friends, if I were you. I haven't given up on acquiring them quite yet." He waved his hand, and your bonds were undone. "Take the elevator down to the lobby. My desk attendant will see you out."
Nathan squinted at the man. It couldn't be that easy, there had to be some sort of catch. He stood slowly and walked towards the door, opened it. He walked out into the hallway.
There was the elevator. Goodness, what a posh hallway! It seemed to be deserted.
"Oh, by the way," Blake called after you. "You had better hurry. I sent my minions out after them a few minutes ago."
Nathan paused on his way to the elevator, registering Blake's words. Immediately, fear set in. Nathan headed for the stairs instead and sprinted down them and into the street. He sped to the park, desperately searching for Maddie and Crash.
It was a quiet, peaceful day outside. At first, you saw and heard nothing. But then you thought you spotted a dark shape through the trees, heading up the side of the hill.
Nathan went after the figure slowly moving up the hill. He hid behind trees and rocks, following the stranger unnoticed.
He moved silently between the trees, pausing regularly to look around. Suddenly, he stiffened and whipped around. To your relief, you saw that it was Crash. He looked at the bushes suspiciously. "Who's there?"
Nathan almost collapsed in relief. "Oh my god, Crash, it's me." Nathan walks into view. "Where's Maddie?" he asked urgently.
"Nathan! We were lookin' for you earlier. Maddie's not far. Some dude came along that said he knew her, but he's gone right now. What happened to you?"
Nathan's eyes widened. "FORGET about ME! We have to get to Maddie!" he grabbed Crash's arm and ran down the hill.
"Where is she?!" Nathan asked sharply, ignoring the question.
"She's by the lake, taking a nap." (I say this since @"Carys L Roberts" seems to be not on atm)
