It's situational. Both will be wanting it, "it" being sex, unless it an abusive relationship but I'd rather not get into that. Generally, when the smut is actually happening or going to happen, one partner will get more possessive and dominant even if it's awkward and fluffy in the scene. It'll probably be like, hey we're at home, I'm bored and horny, let's fuck. Or it can have been discussed previously, negotiated, and not exactly planned but they'd have a time where both would feel comfortable with it like after dinner just chilling or smth. I find the negotiation tactic is very common in lesbian fiction, but for gay male or straight relationships the two just "go for it" as it were. I'm not the best judge of this type of thing tho, I've only done reading and research but I've never actually been dating anyone before, much less having a sexual relationship with any partner so I wouldn't know much.

I'm not even sure how it works for a nonbinary person since I don't see that much representation in literature. For demisexuality, negotiation is also very common when there is one or both demi partners. I kinda get stuck with polyamory since its a more fluid and dubious topic on the negotiation of it all but threesomes are still intriguing to write and can be good practice to gain more flexible when writing relationships.

Note: By nonbinary person, I would mean having a nonbinary partner or partners.

I agree, it is situational depending on the couple. But most of the time (in reality) most people don't plan it per se.
Most of the time the couple is just hanging out and enjoying a good time and then little things lead up to the act. Kissing while cooking food, dancing around the apartment, laughing and cuddling, etc. Things that require contact and bring them together in an intimate setting that isn't exactly sexual but you can feel the undertones of it. They're making out on the couch and things just get more and more intense between them until BAM! Doing the do.

Alright so…
childbirth.

I have a bit of a problem with figuring out the reproduction part of the cycle, specifically how they are born and what factors can make them sterile.
I think the main thing that would happen for sterile babies is cross-breeding into a different sub-species. Since my main species is called Haberes (kinda like humans, but evolved/mutated), and the fact that Haberes are broken into different sub-species or even races if you could call them that, I would have to think about those oddities.

First up is the sterile offspring. I think it should happen if both parents are different sub-species, but I am also open to other ideas of how to apply sterilization.

Second is how the babies are born. There are live-births, of course, but some Haberes are aquatic/amphibian/reptilian/avian-like and I wasn't sure if that should also carry over to how they give birth, like eggs or an external fetus, etc. Any ideas as to how I should handle this?

Oh dang this is super interesting!

Let's try to tackle sterilization first.
I think it actually is a really good idea to bring this point into your story. It could be an interesting plot device. Also because most people don't really include this sort of thing and science/ genetics has always fascinated me–anyway. My main advice would be to research sterile species that we have in the world right now. Generally sterilization happens when combining the qualities of two organisms of different breeds, varieties, species or genera through sexual reproduction (or splicing but that's very science fiction). So technically you could apply sterilization to children of different subspecies of your main civilization, but you would have to think about why you are making it so.
For example:
A Mexican Human can mate with an Asian Human because we are all from the same family of species, just different races…. so maybe have your main civilization broken up into more distinguished sub-species. Like Human v Neanderthal. Where as a liger, is sterile because although it's parents are from the "Big Cat Family", they are two completely different species.

Sterilization could also happen naturally from the environment. Too much radiation in the world can cause a mutation in the genome making them unable to have offspring. You can apply this to one or two sub species over the others depending on their exposure to the environment.

Primarily I would say that this is up to you, how you want to handle childbirth, but I am going to say that the more non-human qualities that you add to a character the more you should hold true to them. If you have a sub-species that is similar to a mermaid, I think that having a live birth would be an excellent way to go, since dolphins and other large water mammals have live births. But if you have something more like a frog I would suggest perhaps a egg-like birth but more along the lines of the female births the egg in a safe location and then takes care of the growing fetus externally. Kinda like the weird genesis chamber from man of steel.

For an avian like race I think laying eggs would be a bad ass idea, similar to the frogs just not underwater.

Honestly idk if any of this made sense. lol

@RedTheLoveless

That made a ton of sense and actually helped a lot. Thank you so much, Eris! I definitely will be using the cross-species sterilization method since that seems to be the most relevant to my beings. This also would allow me to bring in Sperm/Egg donors as another interesting plot device.

Awesome! I honestly really loved the idea so I enjoyed doing a bit of research.

Question, is it weird that I want to experiment with, like, not bestiality but not totally human kinks? Like, multiple arms, or a tail, or something like that? I dunno I've seen writing like that and I honestly wanna try it but idk.

Deleted user

Ermmmm… not weird per se, but a little strange. Approaching Hentai territory.

@_sleeby_rat_

I mean not really, I think hentai territory is more tentacles and just ridiculously obvious yaoi-for-the-sake-of-yaoi. Omegaverse, for example, is rather common, as well as elements of it, but it in itself isn't necessarily "bestiality" or hentai territory. A lot of my characters have a few things borrowed from omegaverse mechanics, and you can see that quite a bit in things like demon or werewolf characters

(shrugs)

Not my forte but I aint gonna judge hon.

Yeah, it's weird but I think I might have a small kink for writing this. Not like I'd actually want anything to do with that in real life, but I'm a little kinda sorta maybe into writing weird stuff for the heck of it.
