Kanoa winked, "He is, but don't tell him what I said! It'll be our secret to share!" she waved her hand and the cookies flew out of the oven, arranging themselves on top of a white dish.

Wow… There was so much magic in this house, overflowing from the atmosphere, the air buzzing with it. "When did you learn to do magic?", she asked, successfully forcing the stutter out of her voice as a profound happiness lifted her up.
"I was born with it. My mom was a witch, my grandmother was a witch, my great-grandmother was a witch, my great-great grandmother was a witch, my great-great-great grandmother was a witch, my great-great-great-great grandmother was a witch," Kanoa took a deep breath, "Should I go on?"
Laurie nodded, enraptured.
"It's kinda boring." Kanoa sighed and then the oven dinged, lighting up her eyes, "The pumpkin strudel!"
Pumpkin? Strudel. What were there things? Some sort of exotic plants maybe? Laurie breathed in the smell of yet another delicious treat, a rush of warmth enveloping her. Touched by Kanoa’s incredible generosity, she felt another gust of a luck charm breezing out of her and into Kanoa again.
Kanoa laughed as the dust settle on her eyelids, "It's like getting tiny kisses from fairies!" she winked, "I guess this means it won't be burnt. I've been trying out non-magical ways of life and I have to say, how do humans do it? I wouldn't last a day!"
Laurie blushed again, scratching the back of her neck. “Have you, um, ever tried honeysuckle and elderflower root salve for first and second degree burns?”, she asked tentatively.
Kanoa shrugged, "I just use my burn salve potion. It works faster."
Laurie nodded, flexing her brown moth wings and taking another sip of the aromatic tea. As she shifted in her spot, the edge of one of her torn sleeves caught in a nail and ripped even more, exposing the ugly words that had been carved into her skin by her ‘parents’.
Kanoa practically launched herself across the table, grabbing Lauriel's arm, "What's that? Are you okay?"
“No!”, Laurie screamed as Kanoa grabbed her arm. She jumped backwards, pushing down her sleeve so that she couldn’t she the awful words. Her head spinning with memories, she curled up ina ball on the grounds, silent tears streaming down her cheeks.
Kanoa jumped over the table and buried Lauriel into a hug. "It's gonna be ok."
Laurie shook with tears as the memories of those torturous days came back to her. Her father holding her down her mother carved the word ‘useless into her arm with an iron knife. She remembered the days her father twisted her arm slowly until the bone snapped in two, remembered the time her mother had dunked her head into boiling water. Kansas arms envelopes her comfortingly and Laurie cried. All the tears she’d pent up for so long came pouring out.

You said Kansas. HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAH
Kanoa's hair came undone from her long braid as she held onto Lauriel as Lauriel cried, and her long white hair fell over Lauriel's curled up body, tickling Lauriel's nose.
Laurie had never felt this much comfort and warmth in all her life.As Kanoa’s hair fell in front of her face, her mouth quirked up a bit into a little smile, just for a moment. Pulling away and drying her eyes on her sleeve, she said:”Thank you Kanoa. You,m have no idea wha-what it means to me that you actually care.”, she sniffles, grateful.
Kanoa's eyes softened. "You're my friend. And friends care about each other, they love each other, and they'd do anything for each other."

Laurie looked up at Kanoa’s large sparkling rainbow eyes. “Friend?”, she asked, so incredibly grateful and happy and… confused too. “Why would someone like you want to be friends like someone like me?”
*with someone like me

Kanoa cupped Lauriel's face with her hands, "You, my dear, are an amazing, beautiful, wonderful person and I happen to be attracted to amazing, beautiful, and wonderful people."
