"If we're thinking it's the same person then yeah but, what the hell is he wearing in this heat?"
"If we're thinking it's the same person then yeah but, what the hell is he wearing in this heat?"
"I have no idea, we should go talk to him right?"
"Probably," Darren trudged back to shore.
Lillian grabbed his hand, "If you don't want to we don't have to. This is going to be a day for you okay?"
"No I want to talk to him. He's hurting and could probably use some good news anyway,"
"Okay, then let's go," Lillian gave Darren a smile before making her way to shore.
Darren trotted over to his brother, "Dude, it's like 90 degrees why are you wearing that?"
Lillian nodded standing right behind Darren, "You going to overheat Coop."
Cooper looked up at them with sad eyes, "What are you guys doing here,"
"Celebrating," The excitement drained from Darren's voice and was filled with worry for his brother.
"What are we celebrating?"
"I'm… I'm in remission. No more cancer at least for now," Darren smiled a little and Cooper got up slowly and pulled him into a hug. Not without a fair amount of wincing.
Lillian gave the two a worried smile. Cooper really wasn't doing well, let's hope they could help him feel better.
"So," Darren repeated, "What's with the sweats? It's hot,"
Cooper took the hoodie off, his ribs visible through his skin. He looked incredibly unhealthy but most noticeable was a dark mark on his stomach. "I didn't think it would hurt so much," he muttered.
Lillian couldn't move her eyes from the mark, "That's awful. I'm so sorry Cooper."
Darren knew what that spot meant. It meant the beginning of the end for his brother. More would form and Cooper would become a living skeleton with his weight loss. This time, it was Darren to pull him into a hug. "I'm sorry,"
Lillian didn’t know what it meant, but she wanted to help fix it. She just needed to know how.
"Well, you can come have fun at the beach with us because there's no one else here and we don't care what you look like," Darren smiled and patted his brother's back. "Right, Lil?"
Lillian nodded and gave Cooper a bright smile, “Right!”
Cooper smiled, "Thank's, It means a lot to me,"
Lillian smile grew sincere, “Yep. We’re here for you Cooper.”
Darren ran back out into the waves. Cooper smiled back at Lillian. "Remission, that's good for both of you, huh?"
Lillian nodded again as she let out a small happy sigh, “Yeah it is. It’s different though ya know?”
"Different? How so?"
“I don’t have to constantly worry about everything. Like he can do stuff for himself and it’ll be fine. It’s just hard to explain.”
"Oh, no I get it. It's like you used to have to watch him like a child. Making sure he doesn't get hurt and that everything's okay with him but now that he's okay, at the end of the day, he's an adult and now you don't have to protect him?"
“Yeah. Exactly like that.”
"That makes sense. If it makes you feel any better, he still has brain damage, you can see it in his hand. You'll always have to help him and you can mother me if you want," He grinned.
