"That's fine…" Maddox sat down in a chair, patiently waiting for whatever he was supposed to be doing. He took his hand off his head for a moment and saw that it was covered in blood, quickly putting it back on.
Dusty's eyes widened at the sight of how much blood was on Maddox's hand. She grabbed his other arm and pulled him up, already dragging him away.
"Okay, so no lounging around. I'm taking you to my dad right now," she declared, her voice holding no room for argument.
"W-We really don't have to." Maddox stumbled a bit as Dusty dragged him. "I'm sure he's very busy… I wouldn't want to bother him. What if he's with another patient? My thing's not really urgent; I don't think I'm in any immediate risk of dying."
"Trust me, he's not busy," Dusty stated as they reached a white door. She knocked before opening it. "Daddy? I've got a friend who needs your help."
A middle-aged man with the same hazel eyes as Dusty looked up from the pile of papers on his desk. "Yes? What's wrong? What is it?"
Dusty pulled Maddox in a bit. "He hit his head pretty hard, and now it's bleeding."
"I'm… I'm really okay, sir." Maddox said awkwardly, his hand falling from his head. "I wouldn't want to bother you if you're busy, it's nothing that needs immediate attention, really."
Dusty's father shook his head and stood up. "No, no. I'm not busy. And that doesn't look too good," he said, moving over to examine the wound.
Maddox allowed Dusty's father to examine the wound, wincing a bit when it was touched. "It's not too bad… I just hit my head on a tree branch when I was fl- I mean… standing. On the ground. Like a… um, you know, like a normal human being of course."
"It's all right, kid. My daughter is half phoenix, you think I don't know about magical creatures?" the doctor laughed. "Why do you think we live here, on the edge of the forest? It's certainly not because business is booming over here. Although, we do get quite a bit from the magical folks around."
Dusty sat in an empty chair, watching as her father did doctor-y stuff.
"Well, I was flying, but I don't turn into a magical creature that one would normally think of as flying…" Some sort of rubbing alcohol was applied to Maddox's wound and he hissed through his teeth in pain. There was still blood on his hand, but he didn't seem to notice it.
(Gtg for a bit.)
(Okay)
"Did I forget to mention that this might sting a bit?" Dusty's father asked, causing his daughter to roll her eyes.
Maddox was silent for a bit, trying his best to be still so Dusty's father could fix him. "Dusty is part phoenix… and I'm part unicorn. That's what form I was in when I got hurt. Changing back probably made it worse…"
The doctor nodded slowly. "It could have, depending on the extent of the damage done while you were still in your unicorn form," he agreed. "And it very likely did. It's not as bad as it looked in the beginning, though. There was just a lot of superficial bleeding."
"Mmm…" Maddox flinched a bit again, but stayed quiet. So it's my fault for making it worse. And, you know, wasting time waiting for myself to bleed out. I probably burst a vein or something, nothing serious…
"All right, kid. You're good to go," Doctor Springfield declared with a nod.
Dusty hugged her dad. "Thanks for helping."
"No problem, kiddo," he replied, kissing the top of her head.
Maddox stood up unsteadily, but quickly grounded himself. "Thank you, sir. Um, I-I think I might've gotten a bit of blood on the floor…" He looked at the trail of blood that had followed him into the room. "Would you like me to clean it up?"
The doctor chuckled. "No, no. That's all right. I'll just–" He waved at the trail, and it vanished almost instantly. "–clean it myself."
"Daddy! Stop showing off," Dusty said, shaking her head.
He winked at her before turning back to Maddox. "I don't believe I caught your name. I'm Joseph Springfield."
"Er, Maddox Fraust, sir." Maddox shook Mr. Springfield's hand politely. "Pleasure to make your acquaintance. Is there anything I should know before I go? No transformations or something?"
"Of course. No transformations, like you said. And try not to do anything strenuous for the next twenty-four hours," Joseph declared.
"Alright. Is the transformation thing also 24 hours? Or are there different rules for that?"
Doctor Springfield nodded. "Yes, twenty-four hours, at least. Longer would be better, though."
"Okay. Thank you sir. Dusty and I should be on out way now." Maddox nodded at Dusty and left the room.
"Right, we should," Dusty agreed before giving her father one last hug. "Bye, Daddy. I'll see you later, okay?"
"Of course, sweetheart. And you can bring your friend for dinner, too, if you'd like," the doctor whispered the last part in her ear before letting go and winking at her.
Dusty blushed and walked out.
"So… back to the forest, I suppose?" Maddox asked once Dusty had come out of the house. There were bandages on his head, but he didn't really seem to care. "What did your father want to talk to you about?"
